I've seen Samurai Champloo, and I was wondering what other anime there is of that same context.... I understand that there are quite a few, but in order to understand them you have to watch certain ones first, so that info would help to.

How about the Kensin OVAs Tsuiokuhen/Seisohen? Actually quite different from SC (no comedy at all), but they fit the samurai genre.

I would recommend Sword of the Stranger. It's story is simple but it still has the best animated fight scenes.

I also recommend Saraya Gouyu. It's similar to Samurai Champloo in that it's about characters that find it hard to escape from their past.
