Screw the rules! I have red text!

Shouldn't be long, since they abridge everything these days.

Don't feel too bad for us :P

While we may not be getting the same level of detail and emotion as VN-readers, I still think that Umineko is great. And judging by the general consensus of the VN-readers out there, such an opinion of the anime adaptation seems to be a freak occurrence.

Yeah, I'm missing information. I'm missing scenes where Battler cries milk and UUOOOOOOHHHH's to his heart's content. I'm missing out on nice BGM and lengthy discussions. But for all I know, none of that actually exists. Higurashi's adaptation was well-received thanks to that fact alone, and years later, the majority of the VNs still have no English translation so we can't rip DEEN to shreds for whatever butchery they committed.

Perhaps it does suck for us. Or rather, in the eyes of VN-readers, us anime-only viewers are getting the shitty end of the stick. The funny thing is, these claims and assumptions are most likely far from true for a lot of anime-only viewers out there. By ranting so damn negatively in each and every episode thread, sometimes I begin to feel that VN-readers are trying to bring us anime-only viewers down with them, trying to persuade us that we shouldn't like what we're seeing despite it actually being entertaining and/or good.

As good as it could be? Maybe not. But to flat out call it terrible just sounds silly.

The Umineko anime, if treated as a standalone story, is actually pretty damn good. Solid show.

Compared to the game, however, it is a steaming pile of bad.

That's how good the game is.

But yes, the show is good and this episode is good.

We should have ripped DEEN in Higurashi s1 if the game had been translated, it's the worst VN adapatation since Tsukihime, that's if there was a Tsukihime anime, beacuse there ISN'T one. Still, DEEn sucks at adaptations

AFAIK, no one has solved the riddle, or at least, not in a way that convinces everyone. But I think the important thing is, is that Ryukishi has said we SHOULD be able to solve the riddle after Episode 3. One would assume the discussion the parents have about the riddle is a big part of whatever clues he gave us that makes that possible.

Maybe they intentionally removed the discussion from the anime because they decided they don't want people to be able to solve the riddle when it's probably going to be 2+ years before the conclusion of the series.

Something that bugs me is that beatrice said:

I keep my promises If you solve the riddle of the epitaph, you should be able to reach the Golden Land. When you have, the ceremony will be over. No more people will die.

I don't remember if this was left in the anime, anyway "I keep my promise" was stated in red and Beatrice did promise that by solving the riddle the people would stop dying.

But there's one way to make a sense out of this. I wonder, should I say it? It took me a lot to realize this although it's probably possible to see it without any further knowledge of future games. Just to be sure I'll place it under spoiler tags

Spoiler for secret (not so much):

I think that's a pretty good explanation, myself. I think there is definitely a deeper meaning to the epitaph than just finding the gold, and that it's going to be the most important part of the mystery.

Huh... So to solve the entire epitath, they've gotta get all 4 of the prizes, and so far she only has one... Hmmm... I'm confused I always thought that all you had to do was find the gold... Opps She now she has to follow the epitath and kill people?

@ChibiBear

If you view the epitaph in a chronological order.

This:
"The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land."
comes after twilight 3 to 9.

Therefore, Eva must have gone through (if she did it correctly) those "killing twilights" to gain the gold from the golden land.

And for the other treasures, I think they would gain it when the mystery is solved. Everyone becomes united against this "evil Beatrice" and prevent the tradegy from happening.

Naturally, the love of siblings/cousins/cousinXservants would be found.

The resurrection of the souls of the dead. In other words, if the living were supposed to die, but managed to scrape past a near death experience, it sure does sound like a resurrection. And thus it won't literally imply a dead person rising from the grave i guess.

And if this "evil beatrice" is defeated. The mystery of beatrice is unveiled. Maybe Beatrice was like the "so-called Oyashiro-sama", once the truth about this beatrice is found. No longer would anyone blame "beatrice" and her legend would be put to rest.

*rolls eyes* Whatever. I would like to say that not EVERY fan of the VN thinks this. It's just the majority of us who don't think that the anime is "OMG HORRIBLE" have given up on these episode threads.

(partially because of the negative vibes these threads give, and partially because disagreeing with said vibe immediately gets one criticized.)

Still I love to point out that everyone bitches about DEEN imagine the horror if Gonzo did this show. I can only image the complaints for that XD

From an anime only viewer and knowing bits here and there about the game. I look to see what was missed, I found this episode to be quiet awesome. The fight scene was epic indeed.

For those of you who aren't chess players, "Smothered Mate" is a real chess term. It refers to a loss due to being unable to move your king out of check because of your own pieces, which was the situation Beatrice was in.

As for the interminable SN vs. anime debate, can I just say I'd like to see the SNs re-done with anime-quality (or better) art?

7, it's a bit sad when the famous fan made battle is more detailed than the anime...

I just watched railgun and imagined Umineko that good.... I would be happy if the myth battle was as good as the rail gun scene...

the focus is not suppose to be the battle scenes to begin with. They are just their to add up the sense of epic-ness to the story. Also the time constraint doesn't really help. It would've be better if they allocate more episodes per EP, but it's a bit too late for that now.

Not sure if the fan made one is "more detailed", certainly not the shoulder towers.

A smart way to watch this series, would be to watch the anime, and then read the VN... Because then you don't think that the anime sucks that much(hopefully), and they when you read the VN you think it's way better
