Frankly, the characters and their relationships with each other are so different that for me there's no point in pretending this is "Shinsekai yori," really. And as for the story, I haven't read those chapters, but from what I read it's not only greatly simplified but basically completely rewritten. So again, my opinion is still that this is at best on the level of a doujinshi spin-off.

well that depends, is the anime and manga essentially the same in terms of plot and story? cause I havent seen the anime and perhaps thats the reason discussion here is so low (since they already finished the series anyway?).
just wandered up around here after finding out the manga a few months ago.

The anime and manga share the most basic elements of the plot structure. The anime closely follows the original novel material, but the manga does not. It adds a lot more graphic (gratuitous even) sex and violence. It also adds characters not seen in the novel or the anime and changes several scenes, which in turn alters characterization.
If you're looking for a more faithful adaptation of the novel (it's the original source material), the anime is the way to go. If you're not interested in watching the anime, and can't read the novel, the manga is enough to understand the basic order of events but it is not a faithful adaptation in any other way.

I haven't read past the first volume or so, but based on that it doesn't even share the plot structure. The whole bakenezumi adventure plays out in a completely different way in the manga than it does in the anime and the novel. And yes, the characters don't even resemble their anime/novel selves.

I meant in terms of basic outline. The details differ a lot, but the general parts that lead from start to end are the same. There's still the trip, finding the librarian, the time skips, the festival, the hospital, Tokyo, etc.
Everything else is way different though, especially the characters. They barely resemble their anime/novel counterparts and there's a whole bunch of new characters that seem added because I dunno. I guess the extra Yuri was nice. But honestly the manga feels like they really wanted to make a Hentai doujin but decided to tone it down just enough to sell it in stores.

As the readers of the novel would say, you are lucky you don't read the novel. The anime censored a lot of part. Even novel readers complained about the anime, it's fortunate that the anime took out the shocking parts Even omitting stuff, the anime story is still making sense....keep fingers crossed. |

Also, regardless, the manga is an "alternate story" insofar as it's loosely inspired by the novel's setting and characters. It has barely anything to do with the novel. |
