13 is Not Enough

I remember when the series just started that there was an argument about the series length. Everywhere now seems agreed that Mai HiME is to be 13 episodes total. First of all, that's a ***INSERT LONG STRING OF EXPLICIT COMMENTS***. Mai HiME is quickly becoming a personal favorite (behind Last Exile and Shingetsutan Tsukihime) and needs to be 26 at least, or better yet 52. Second, I heard people saying that there were mech credits or something for episode 20. Does anyone have a ray of sunshine for me?

You know, that must come in handy when you want to watch the World Series, but happened to eat a batch of radioactive kimchee or something. But other than that, having a TV in the bathroom seems a little indulgent to me. I think it's just one way that the American and Japanese concept of efficiency clashes.

But speaking of indulgent, how about episode four? The panty-thieving monster that turned into a giant pink-tentacled beast seriously walked the tightrope between funny and stupidly gratuitous. I hope it's a little less blatant in future episodes, because sexuality is just so much more eye-catching when it's subtle.

It was still a great episode, though. I dig Natsuki the most at this point, because she tries so hard to be a badass, but turns out to just be a somewhat endearing (if overly serious) dork. It's very relatable compared to the "weird savage" Mikoto and "oh, I'm so genki it kills me" Mai. They all have some cool factor going on, however.

I'm rooting for the kendo student and Natsuki to get together at some point. That meditation scene was golden.

Depending on your state, they sell Cigarettes, Liquor, Soda, Toys, Candy, Gasoline, even Porn and underware (YES UNDERWARE). Hot Coffee in a can isn't one of them though (DARN)

And yes Heated Toilets and TV's in the bathroom ARE a big deal. It's not standard equipment in all American houses. (Though heated toilet seats are nice - Just watch out for the Bidet Button :O )

It's really the frame of mind, when I was in Australia lots drove a station wagon. In America SUV's are the current rulers and station wagons are rare (At least on the west coast)

---------------------------------------

Now back to Mai-Hime, I wonder if that sword is Mikoto's Child or does she have an upgrade. She can summon it like a child and it has 2 eyes. If it is her child what is her primary power?
1) Underwear, not underware. It would be a "ware" to those who sell it, "wear" to those who own it.

2) Though a mechanical wolf battledroid is all kinds of badass, Mikoto's weapon does seem to have powers not unlike the "One Ring." Her's the the one sword to rule them all, but with a tad better disposition. For instance, it cut the dorry (not lifeboat) equipment inthe first episode on it's own while Mikoto was zonked. (Can anyone explain how long she stayed FACE DOWN in the water?) Though Duran and Mai's supa-dragon have plenty of power, Mikoto's offers the power in balance. First, she can leave it anywhere, just reach in the sky and call it. How convienient is THAT? It seems it has a connection with her mind when she touches it, in the way the one ring whispers things at you to drive you insane, her's helps her. Think more like they way the Figures in Figure 17 worked, or the Sword card in Cardcaptor Sakura. I think Mikoto's sword fights through her. Don't get me wrong, she's got tons of dexterity, but I don't think she'd have much sword experience, espesically with one taller then her. Thus, the sword takes over/helps her mind in fighting.

Remind me what "genki" means as used here, please?

"Genki" in that context refers to an energetic, lively girl. As far as I know, it's such a common archetype that you can say "she's a genki-type character" and it brings to mind a definite image. But I could be wrong, of course, being only a first-year Japanese student with no direct knowledge.

I don't know; it's not like she's a bad or shallow character, but I don't like Mai very much. That poor Take fellow should run from both her and the obsessive loli "sister."

I'm sorry, I do not understand how "Eating a kimchee" and "watching a sports game in the bathroom" go together.

Where did you get the 'concensus of 13 episodes'? What is the official source these sites gave as their reasoning that it is 13 episodes?

According to Ken Otsuka, a mecha designer working on Mai Hime, the whole series is 24 episodes.

I think when he said "radioactive kimchee", he meant really hot food - ie, food that will go through your digestive tract like a bat out of hell. Thus the usefulness of a TV in a bathroom - you can eat spicy food while watching a big game without having to worry about toilet breaks,

wow topic is trailing off...back to mai hime

well really enjoyed natsuki in the episode...i wonder if other than the 3 himes, is the one with the pink medusa hair (hangs around tate) a hime? or maybe the president. Gawd i wanted more of the girly middle school kid who said "damn, ruining my masterpiece" in the 3rd ep.

More mai-hime! better than SEED DESTINY

you mean Tate Yuuichi? I'd say he must persevere, persevere and he'll get extra happiness

Genki... every time I hear this word I'm reminded of My Neighbor Totoro, I mean, that "genki song"

Ah, I see where the confusion is....

I said "TV in the bathroom" as in bathroom = the place where you take a bath. Not bathroom = toilet.

I'm Korean, so kimchee is always on the table at dinner time (I believe the Japanese have a similar dish). I'm used to it, but I notice that many people don't have as good a reaction. So having a telly in the bathroom would be useful for those kinds of days, when you're sitting on the pre-heated toilet and there's something important on at the same time.

Edit: Ah, a BATHroom. Gotcha. Sorry about that.

Anyway, back to My HiME.

Umm this isn't a Hentai...so no Hunterx,

And when I said Bathroom...I meant BATHROOM. American bathing rooms and toilets are in the same room. /GASP! hehe

But when I was in the Hyatt hotel the television (Complete with remote) was next to the toilet! (I did mention TV and Heated seats in the same sentence)

Kimchee is from Korea, not Japan. Keep this in mind will you It is a big difference.

Speaking of kimchee, I sometimes make my own kimchee just for the heck of it (taught by a friend) .

Anyway, esp 4 was a fun watch. The characters' reaction were not what I was expecting.

I'll just point out that according to snopes.com, there indeed was a vending machine in Chiba selling panties worn by teenage girls. http://www.snopes.com/risque/kinky/panties.htm

haha, yeah episode 4 was great, I haven't laughed that hard at an anime series in a long time. I have to admit though, the 'monster'... dude... thing, was very odd, I mean... why was it collecting panties and bras exactly?

Thumbs up

Well, when I first saw the promo for this anime...I wasn't expecting it to turn out so awesome.

The first episode was pretty good. It introduced a few of the main characters and then went into an awesome battle with Mikoto and Natsuki. When I saw the battle with those two...I knew I was going to love this anime.

The second episode was fine, and as I expected it took the time to set everything up a bit more befor rushing into more battles. When episode 3 came...hell yes...the first half was so awesome. The animation and especially the music was fantastic. I was more hooked on this anime more then ever and wanted more! XD

Anyway, episode 4 was pretty good. Natsuki is a great character, and we got to see some interesting facial expressions from her among other things. XD

This is one of the best animes I've seen in a while. Maybe not since FMA I think...Well, Mai & Mikoto are my fav characters. Natsuki is cool, and I love her kick ass mecha wolf. Gotta get more info on Kagutsuchi and Miroku though. =P

Waiting for episode 5...seems like it should give more details on things and introduce a few new characters. Can't wait! XD

Oh, and btw everyone...not sure if this was brought up in this thread already, but I noticed the Mai and Mikoto bed scene originally seen in the promos, was altered for the actual episode ending credits.

Comparison:
Promo
Episode Ending Credits

Less yuri in the up to date one...no biggie, just interesting that they edited it up a bit. =P

Actually Mai's mecha is pretty much the same, it acts on its on. Remember the first episode when both Mai and Mikoto where drowning? Who saved them? It was revelaed in the 3rd episode that it was Mai's Mecha. Also Natsuki also just calls for her mecha. I think its going to be pretty much the same for them all in that respect, there's some sort of bond between them and the mecha. Natsuki and the weird guy both refer to the Mecha as Guardians, who guard the Hime, rather than just as your standard mecha tools.

Im thinking they're similar in that respect to say Kit from Knight Rider (ya remember, the talking thinking car :P)

It's a Greatblade or Greatsword, slightly larger than a claymore and usually more flashy. Claymores are rather symplistic in their designs, greatswords were tools of knights and stuff and tended to be a tad heavier and flashier.
