Episode 3:

Good episode as a way of building up the story.

At first, my impression of Nat wasn't that good but by the end of this episode, he really did shown honest concern about Riko's well-being. He realizes that they may are likely to never see again once Riko turns that journey to the Abyss. Really sad if you think about it considering they are kids and they only have each other. (well and Leader I guess)

Also, the world fiction of this series (at least from the descriptions told through storytellling so far) sounds very interesting.

I believe he knew she was going and that there was no good way to stop her short of keeping her locked up for the rest of her life. The package Reg was looking at is from him, I think.

I must say
Why is this so damn good? I was about to cry for a farewell that happened in 3 episodes, that shit is usually reserved for about 12 episodes of buildup but I got so invested in Nat and the others. This story has life in it, I can feel it breathe.

I really wish the orphanage kids would just stick together, they have some great chemistry and fun interaction together. In fact I feel like Nat interactions works better with Reg and Riko, than the latter two do with each other. Which is kind of worrying because Reg and Riko will have to carry the show from this point on. Unless that bunny girl in the ending gets introduced sooner rather than later to spice things up.

The choice of title is even more symbolic than I thought originally. According to Wikipedia, the Japanese title for this show is "Meido in Abyss". Though "meido" usually refers to a "maid," Wiki provides a second more intriguing definition, "Meido (冥土), the Japanese reading of míngtú, a Buddhist concept of the course of the dead as they enter Diyu."

What's Diyu? It's the realm of the dead, and specifically
Quote:
a subterranean maze with various levels and chambers, to which souls are taken after death to atone for the sins they committed when they were alive. The exact number of levels in Diyu and their associated deities differ between Buddhist and Taoist interpretations. Some speak of three to four "courts"; others mention "Ten Courts of Hell", each of which is ruled by a judge (collectively known as the Ten Yama Kings); other Chinese legends speak of the "Eighteen Levels of Hell". Each court deals with a different aspect of atonement and different punishments; most legends claim that sinners are subjected to gruesome tortures until their "deaths", after which they are restored to their original state for the torture to be repeated.
I hope our plucky adventurers don't suffer such a horrible fate.

Yeah, this is my only worry too. I love the chemistry with the orphanage kids and Nat especially seems to have a real importance to the dynamic. Do the others just drop out altogether at this point? Does the narrative start to switch between different settings (note: asking rhetorically)?

A great set up. The more and more I hear about the Abyss, the more and more, I get the same feelings that I got reading Journey to the Center of the Earth or seeing the movie, King Solomon's Mines.

But like the person who left the clues and messages in Verne's classic, I have a feeling that Riko's mom too, is long dead. I actually wasn't mad at Nat at all for saying what he did, as I would have probably said the same thing in an effort to knock some since into my idiot, naive friend. His words were kind of exactly what I was thinking.

However, we all knew they would go down anyway, so let's see where it takes them. I'm interested in seeing all these new lands.

I was afraid though for the little baby kid. Him saying that he was always sleepy recently, and it was his birthday soon, scares me. And also, something is up with tall these skeletons "in prayer". Something really not right here.

Considering that they used 8 chapters for 3 episodes, and not really rushing it... I'm worried that 12-13 episodes planned are not enough. No 2nd season rumors?

This is something I wanted to ask too. I'm hoping that the orphanage kids get more than just cameos as I don't really know whether just Riko and Reg can carry this for a while.

A bit slow, honestly they should have left since episode 2. Not that I think it's bad or anything but this is just 13 episodes, so we're 1/4 though already.

The orphanage thing feels like Riko's backstory that she should just have narrated in the boring times.

Hmm ... it will be interesting to see how the two of you (and others who perhaps have similar concerns) will react as the narrative continues.

The pacing seems about right for 13 episodes to cover the first five volumes.

Riko was also made in the Abyss. Not conceived but born.

BTW I noted Reg has more nipples than the entire cast of Dive ...

This is the only thing that irked me about this episode. I mean they've pretty much built up the Abyss as practical suicide full of horrible things so wouldn't it actually make sense to lock her up at least until she's an adult if that's what it takes? I'm not sure the Leader made the right call there if he actually did know.

Would that help at all though? After all after they let her out, she'd still be a red whistle. Nothing's indicated that age necessarily helps against the curse of the abyss, and you're certainly not getting any practical experience if you're just locked up.

Realistically the only thing I think that would work and have any sort of sticking force is if Leader has some way to show them that they aren't anywhere close to ready to make the journey. Talking isn't going to work, they have to experience the fact that they can't even handle the first layer, let alone get to the bottom layer for them to understand they need to get better before going.

Normally I'd say this is the situation where he'd be following them from the shadows to swoop in and save them when they get in over their heads, but I'm not sure that's going to happen here. He has all the other kids to look after too, so it's not like he can take a prolonged leave to follow those two around.

I interpreted the title as a joke reference to "Made in China"

I"m old enough to remember when it would have been a reference to "Made in Japan."

Have liked this so far and want to continue, but am worried because people have said that this gets dark soon.

Not sure what they mean, but without spoilers is it possible to elaborate on the dark part? Like is this going to turn into to a horror genre because i don't do well with those.

I know nothing about the source material (or even if there is source material), but I wouldn't expect any kind of "darkness" or "horror" beyond what you find in Miyazaki films like Nausicaa or Spirited Away. Those can be scary to some people (my sister-in-law doesn't want to watch Spirited Away, for example), but they're hardly what you'd call part of the "horror" genre.

That's my impression, anyway, based on the look and feel of what we've seen so far.
