Yeah, but I somehow feel that France could have done a lot better than that. Playing Olivier Giroud as a target man is not a good idea when you need the team to have a better buildup play. How many chances did Giroud squander again today? Anthony Martial should have started on the wing while Griezmann should play as a false 9. The front 3 needs to be a lively unit.

Giroud is the same problem to France as Mario Gomez was to Germany. From the moment the Germans decided to drop the concept of a slow target man, they became more dangerous (as with Özil, Kroos and Müller building up behind the fox that was Klose). For France's sake, I think they are better off playing with a running false 9 (Griezmann) while a talented winger like Martial or Coman fills up the 11th position.

I was watching the game at this bar, right, and had to leave when it was 0-0 a bit into the second half. Well right after I got out Giroud scored.
Le sigh. But anyway, if Romania is an indication of what the underdogs are going to do in this Euros, we're in for a great tournament. They pressed France everywhere and played football rather than shut up shop. Pogba was made ineffective, and so was Griezmann despite a few moments of his usual brilliant movement. Unfortunately for them Payet was unstoppable and Kante kept the French midfield in the fight. Giroud did alright IMO. He did score the first goal and despite Romania being heavily on him he was able to be in the position for several key chances. He was clearly the focal point of the attack and Romania knew it, though I can't help but wonder if it's because Deschamps was being one-dimensional or if the plan B, for Griezmann to do that second striker run into the box to take advantage, didn't come off today (also partly because Romania was also onto it and they were heavily tracking Griezmann too). Defence-wise, Romania did great but France felt wobbly. Rami wasn't quite good enough or maybe he didn't have enough chemistry with Kos, and the fullbacks were limited. Sagna is no Bellerin. :P Either way a good start to a potentially cracking tournament. 24 bloody teams! Some of these teams are coming off a high |

Typical England. Roy Hodgson has been stupid for not taking off Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling sooner; both players could not score in a brothel. Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy was on the bench... Some managers at international level are just plain dumb.
In other matches, I was surprised Albania managed to hold their ground and even be more thereatening after the dismissal of their captain. Nevertheless, the Swiss held on to win. In the Wales/Slovakia match, I was laughing at the comedy of errors from both sides on the winning goal. Otherwise, it was an interesting duel. |

Brazil... descent into hell continues after the 7-1 massacre of 2014. It's still pretty much a team with a lot of average players and a very weak mental strength. I never felt like Brazil would go far enough in my books. It's safe to say they are wasted for at least a few years (if not a decade). |

Iceland drew Portugal. Ronaldo is pissed.
Bloody ICELAND!!! They have an amazing story, too. It's a very unique kind of Northern European Social Democratic fairy tale. Monied egalitarianism. Boom money wisely spent. UEFA B-licensed professional coaches for everyone. Weather-proof, spacious "football houses" for practice and for play. The author called it a kind of small-island ambition, a collectively planned heroic achievement, if you will. A very different vision of world football to Brazil's much romanticized favela footballers, the third world rags-to-riches fairy tale with its two hundred million people-per-one-Neymar ratio, yet they are both great narratives in their own right. I'm curious what kind of football stories will define countries like China and the USA. Will China's master plan produce great results that feel a little bit like Germany's youth revolution, or will it collapse or be corrupted beyond repair by the specter of greed and relentless commercialism? Is the MLS story one of sustainable investment, building a true American soccer culture one strategic plan at a time, or that of disappointment and corporate strangulation? Is there an Alexis Sanchez learning to kick a ball on the dirty, overcrowded streets of Mumbai, one day to lead India to glory, or will he die of dysentery before he could? |

So Iceland is the dark horse of this tournament?
So far there still has not been any upset to EURO. Regarding China, no, I dont think they will speak much of internation football as their League is loosely adapted from EPL. And you know the state of England. (Read: their club owner only cares about merchandise and money) |
