Hey everyone, just wondering is there a way to tell if figures are bootlegs? I've bought a couple of figures from ebay a while ago which cost me quite a large sum of cash and i'm starting to think if they were bootlegs.


Just wondering is it weird for me to keep my figures in the boxes lol? I just hate it when dust collects on them
Any tips on cleaning them as well?

Compressed air is really good. Just make sure to do it often so the dust doesn't become thick and then can't be blown off.

Regarding bootlegs, there's a lot of info floating around the net, but in general there's a few key identifiers that will help you tell almost immediately.

1. Seller: Ebay is notorious for having lots of bootlegs. I generally wouldn't trust anything from Ebay. Avoid sellers form HK and China (except e2046, they're actually legit).,

2. Price: If the price is too low, chances are it's a bootleg unless it's a sale or clearance item at a larger online shop.

Okay, these only help before you buy, but after you buy it, there's a lot of properties you can look for too.

3. Box: Bootlegs often use scans of the box, so if you notice any kind of fuzzy quality to the pictures on the box, then there might be something suspect. Also, some bootlegs will photoshop pictures of their bootlegged version over the original pictures, but sometimes will leave noticeable clues that it's been photoshopped.

4. Sticker: Depending on the manufacturer, most of them have some kind of shiny sticker indicating it's an authentic item. If the figurine you bought is from a company known to have those stickers, and it doesn't have them, then there's a good chance it's a bootleg. The exception being if you bought it from an American shop that imports items from Japan. Those usually will have an AAAnime sticker, that sometimes can cover up the shiny sticker.

5. Coloring: A lot of bootlegs have color variations form the original, try finding reviews of the original item and compare the. Bootlegs are also known to be a lot more 'shiny' than the original items.

6. Quality: There might be a lot of small quality issues that aren't apparent until you're less than a feet away. Things like stray paint marks, chisel marks, differences in the pose, etc. There might be pieces that seem too thick (because of the re-cast), and areas that aren't as detailed.

7. Known Bootlegs: Not all figurines are bootlegged. Try googling to see if there are known bootlegs of the figurine in question. Some bootlegs of more popular figures have comparison reviews, where their flaws are pointed out.

A simple way is just to compare your figures with some pictures of the authentic version, typically found on the manufacturer's website, or on review sites.

You can also check for a seal of authenticity on the box, although I have heard that some of those have been successfully faked.

In the absence of a authenticity sticker, there might be a sticker from some company to verify that it was authorized for US retail.

It's hard to be specific without knowing who made the figures, or which ones they are, though, since some fakes are widely known for certain qualities.

I actually have a bootleg that took me an hour of comparison against online photos to figure out it wasn't legit. Although, it seems more like a faulty production line model that probably got repackaged and resold in the after market than a re-cast, because I seriously couldn't tell until I found some specific spots that looked more like production defects.

Both

I can only afford one so I'm getting the figma. BRS has to be slim (flatchested) and highly poseable with the blade and cannon, while a chubby nendoroid doesn't really suit her image, imho. Plus I like the third face of the figma (with the closed eyes) better than the silly face of the nendo.

Both have been delayed until 08/25 btw

Well, whether you should get a figma or a Nendoroid completely depends on what you want. I am a Nendo-tard because I absolutely love chubby, cute, SD, baby-looking things with big, shiny eyes and tiny wittle hands and feet ; I'm only getting BRS figma because I want a highly posable badass figma, since my figma Loli Nanoha kinda failed me there. And oh yeah, her Rock Cannon. Also, figmas cover a wide range of source material (not as wide a range as Revoltech, though), while Nendoroids tend to always be from moe/bishoujo sources.

But yea - do you like ~$35 cute babies, or do you like ~$25 highly posable widely differeing in style comedic poseable figures or badasses? It's all what you want.

Exactly. Most otaku will not get all that attached to male characters. Where as they can become pretty obsessive over the female ones.
