I think they are asking how do you cope with the subtitles when two people talk at the same time. As in how do you make the two lines of text appear. I would have thought a CR would do the trick Unless I have misunderstood the question as well, but it certainly would help if a better description was given as to what was actually being asked. |

you could also use aegisub, but it gets inconvenient if your work at low monitor resolutions. |

This is how I encode subs into .avi's
Basically you use VirtualDub, load up your timed .ssa into the textsub filter, make sure it looks fine, then encode it at Xvid 1 pass (if you're impatient) at quantifier 2 (it'll look decent, sure it might look assingly bad to some pure encoders out there, but it does the job. Or you can use Xvid 2 pass, which you can then specify a filesize by calculating the bitrate of the video). It's technically not that hard. The toughest part on fansubbing lies solely in translation. No translation, no fansub.

Example: Character 1 - 0:00:21.00 - 0:00:22.50 - (Dialogue) Character 2 - 0:00:21.50 - 0:00:22.00 - (Dialogue) I use Aegisub for whatever I work on, though I think in most of the subs programs, it'll take care of this for you by stacking the line than starts later above the other, so you really don't have to do anything. So: Character 2 dialogue Character 1 dialogue It would stack like that. You can also override it with either \pos tags to stick it somewhere else on the screen or even say \an8 for example if you want it go at the top instead Hopefully that helped. |

Though usually the typesetter will do the tagging and the timer will usually just time. But yes, that pretty much in my opinioned sum'd it up well.
------------------------------------------- Question: Even if using XVID-1pass does'nt your proccessor still decide how fast it can encode and use well-over 300MhZ if not 6 times more if you have the speed to encode? ( Though typically XVID-1pass is usually, not always, shorter in encoding time. ) |

SSA is not completly compatible with Virtual dub.
Virtual dub doesnt read the ssa files properly, for example if you have jotted some text on the top and bottom and left and right sides on sub station alpha (SSA) Virtual dub only reads/offers the bottom section what ever you have wrote? is this some glitch or something to do with the versions of ssa?
my files are saved as ssa of course, who else having this problem. |

Hi. I'm new to fansubbing, but I'm really eager to learn! Right now I already know how to put those time things and prepare the material etc. but when I use VDubMod and try to put the subs as filters->Add->TextSub 2.23->Open->file.ssa->nothing happens.
Can someone help me with this problem? |

Maybe you're looking at the input video pane. By default, the left side pane is the input video, and the right side is the output (filtered. TextSub is one of those filters.) If you press space to preview the video, you only see the video in that input pane. Hit enter to start playing back, and you'll see videos in both panes. And you'll see the sub on the right pane.

Umm... I think I have to explain some more..
When you try to open the .ssa file, you will have to press the ok, right? Well it wont let me even get the 'address' of the file in that box where it should be. So I can't press the 'OK' button. I just downloaded it today, so it should be the newest version. |

Actually, TextSub2.23 is ancient. The whole "vobsub" installer package is outdated. The new version is called vsfilter.dll. Download that file, rename it to vsfilter.vdf, and place it in vdubmod plugins directory.
Anyway. If it doesn't let you open like that, it means the .ssa file has a syntax error somewhere. Go through the file, locate the error, fix it, and try loading it again. |

EDIT: looks like Sylf got to it before I did.
TextSub 2.23 works fine for me with .ass and .ssa files. If the OK box isn't highlighted after you've selected the file, it's indicating that the .ssa file you have has been formatted incorrectly, and the plugin doesn't recognize the file as either .ssa or .ass format. Check your style formats, header lines, and dialogue lines to see if they're formatted correctly. You can also preload sample .ssa files known to work, to make sure your setup is fine |

Oh, thanks. Now it lets me open it, but it still wont show the text... I checked the code and all....

Because posting the script in the forum breaks the formatting badly, it would be better if you can upload the file somewhere on the internet, and give us the link to it.
Anyway. The only thing I see wrong is 0000,0000 ,0000 - there's a space between the second set of 0000 and the next comma. But this could be due to the forum software inserting the space there. |
