I read the whole thing so ravenously that I didn't stop to review any chapter long enough to type out comments for them. The sad thing about archive-binging rather than starting with a fic from the first and only chapter, forced to wait with nothing better to do than ruminate and commentate.

And I hate not giving a chapter the kind of comments all of its contents deserve. Posting a comment just to criticize the flop with Yuuno's characterization, without praising anything in specific, would leave a sour taste in my mouth.


Not quite as bad as NanoFate.us commenting in one of F91/00-Raiser's fics JUST to complain about something he'd written in a completely different story. Ugh!

Well, if the Device was LIKE everyone else's, I suppose.

But giving Yuuno a Device that is primarily a weapon, as with the majority of Intelligent and Armed Devices thus far, is probably not the best for him.

And without any Device at all, he's really not performing as well as he could be. And why accept that handicap for no good reason?

Getting a different source of power up like from a Lost Logia would better though.

I have entertained the idea that perhaps Yuuno actually really IS a Familiar.

* He doesn't have any parents.

* He's the only ostensibly "human" character who has the power to shapeshift into an animal form. And really, why would a Mid-Childan mage ever bother to learn to do that? When you can fly, shoot laser from your hands, deflect huge attacks with barriers of light, and turn invisible, an animal's form doesn't offer many advantages.

* He couldn't use Raising Heart, and doesn't ever get another Device; and it seems like Familiars can't use Devices (or at least nothing better than those Spell Cards the twins had).

* There'd be some interesting drama following the revelation. Especially if his master is dying from old age, and has only just now told Yuuno the truth because he'll be disappearing soon as a result.

Maybe Yuuno is like Ran Yakumo in a way. Meaning that a familiar becomes so strong, enough to summon it's own familiar, but in this case, Yuuno may have Nanoha? Her talent for magic was never thoroughly explained.

Well, Signum isn't an android so instead of the "glitch" that alters Lamia's voice/personality i think Signum will sustain some kind of "brain damage" from her fight with Cypha that will trigger the sudden changes in personality and/or voice xD

Chapter 3.5 - The Phantasm

This had to be the longest staircase he had ever had the misfortune of climbing. Twenty minutes ago, he had started up this unholy flight of stairs. Nine minutes, he came under attack by smoky wisp-like entities, a hellish curtain of blue and red bullets that threatened to shoot him down. In desperation, he threw up a frontal shield, folded like a large plough. Suddenly, his ears were ringing from the cacophony of countless bullets bouncing off the shield, much like a ringing bell placed right next to his ears. That alone almost took him out, had it not been for the appearance of a new enemy: small, child-like beings with gossamer wings and a complete disregard for safety. They too fired at him indiscriminately. Shotgun-like spreads, wild rapid fire that saturated the air with bullets, unguided and homing balls of dangerous magic that seemed to seek him out with reckless abandon. It was simply too much to just block and push through.

With a grunt, Yuuno Scrya pushed more magical power into his flying, feeling a distant burn as he moved with greater speed than he had ever pushed himself to do. The young mage would have to dodge as much as he could and deflect that which came too close. With the bullet curtain constantly being blasted at him, avoiding the shots became a game of grazes and near-hits.

Yuuno quickly discovered the benefit of the grazing shots, however: the closer he got to one bullet, it gave him that much more room to avoid the next one. Rather than fly and avoid entire barrages, the archaeologist found himself diving into the thick of things, plotting complicated twists and turns just to weave through the complicated and at times, random shots.

“Get out of my way!” he yelled to them, tossing up a wide-area shield to create a safe zone. Some of these creatures seemed to aim directly at him, while others fired in spiral patterns, circular waves, or even just wild bursts of firepower.

So many close calls. Too many. He wasn’t sure what would happen if a bullet hit him, if he would outright die, be injured, or merely stunned, but now was not the time to experiment. He had a goal, and it was at the end of this journey.

Mysterious cloudy wisps whorled around in front of him, only to release a massive deluge of human-sized red and blue bullets. Yuuno backpedaled in a panic, watching as the shots miss him by scant inches and more and more and oh god there’s so many--

And suddenly, they were all gone. The air was completely clear of any fairy-like things, strange balls or multi-colored bullets. It was just him, the stairs, and now a stranger--a woman, from the looks of it--floating down the stairs. Dressed in a white robe-like gown with a blue tabard overlaying, the stranger had her hands tucked into her sleeves. Her hair was short and blonde, tucked into a two-tailed amulet-covered hat that gave her the look of having ears. Nine blonde tail-like things swished about from her back.

“Rarely do we get visitors here, let alone human ones,” she spoke, calm and soothing, like that of a mother’s. “Impressive, still, that you’ve managed to come this far despite the danmaku, all without fighting back. May I ask your reason for coming here?”

Danmaku? Was that what all that bullet hell was? No, now was not the time to think about it.

Yuuno gazed at the woman, reminding himself to stay calm and more importantly: be polite. He wouldn’t get anywhere by making demands and being pushy. “Greetings to you. My name is Yuuno Scrya. I’ve come seeking the Lady of Boundaries and her knowledge.”

“The Lady Yakumo is not one to see any visitor that arrives upon these stairs. Tell me, how is it that a child such as you managed to pierce the Border? Or, rather, how is it that you came to know of Lady Yakumo, her power, and this realm?”

“I am the Chief Librarian of the Time-Space Administration Bureau’s Infinity Library. I found information about the Great Boundary amongst its many books, and on further investigation, I did find further evidence in Japan of Earth, and deeper probes found traces of a distortion near an old shrine. The details are bit technical and boring, but suffice to say, I opened a part of the Boundary, stepped through, and sealed it behind me. Following what I gathered from sources, I arrived here.”

She was silent for a moment, processing the information. Slowly, she nodded her acceptance of his explanation. Visitors were indeed exceedingly rare, but not outright impossible. And to penetrate the Border with his own power, let alone detect it, was something to consider. But, what was this Administration Bureau? Japan of Earth? How much had changed on that planet, since the establishment of the Hakurei Barrier? The boy’s choice of clothing was far different from anything she had ever seen, be it ancient fashion or more modern articles.

“So you are a person of unique magic power. How interesting. And what is it you seek to gain from meeting Lady Yakumo and her knowledge?”

Yuuno paused, careful to choose the right words. “Too often I’ve found myself weak and wanting, overshadowed and left behind by my friends as they grew in strength while I stagnated in a library. I wish to be some more use to them, to be able to stand at their sides rather than in the background! I don’t want to be protected -- I want to protect! So, for that, I need the Lady’s help.”

“Then, you seek power,” her expression stayed the same, but her voice had a scary, hardened edge to it. “This desire to stand with your friends and keep them safe is a noble one, but to seek it from Lady Yakumo is a fool’s errand. A mere human cannot hope to understand her power, let alone her wisdom. Why should I allow a child such as you meet the Lady of Boundaries?”

“I... I can’t answer that, lady. I’ve already explained to you my reasonings. I can only hope you will let me through.”

“Hmm. Let me see your conviction, then. My name is Ran Yakumo, shikigami of the Lady Yukari Yakumo! Throw away your fears, and take me on!” The tail-like behind her--no, they were actual tails--stiffened and swished about in agitation as the air grew heavy and almost electrical. She held a hand out, a large orb of power floating in her palm.

Shikigami 「Protection of Zenki and Goki」

Yuuno was nearly overtaken by the yellow and green orbs that seemed to saturate the entire sky. His vision was of only those bullets, crisscrossing at random then seeking him out like frantic bees. Steeling himself, the Librarian pushed more power into his flight magics, willing himself to move.

He could not afford to lose here.

He could not lose.

The stairs were strangely peaceful when he was just resting, his mind throbbing as he tried to gather the willpower he burned to fight the woman, a nine-tailed fox youkai. He discovered this not moments ago, following the absolutely harrowing battle. Though he could not fight back in the traditional sense, his flight skill was tested to the max as he had to duck and weave through Ran Yakumo’s hellish curtain fire. Then, she started spinning! Spinning with trails of wide-spread danmaku in her path as she zipped around him like some furious wasp, forcing him to keep up as best he could. Be it pure luck or his own fledgling skills, he somehow survived. She left just as suddenly as she came, leaving him to taking a breather on the stairs.

A few minutes was enough. With a deep breath, Yuuno Scrya took to the skies once more.

The fairies, the creatures, the strange wisps all returned, their curtain fire as ferocious and unforgiving as before. Stranger still were the hexagramic symbols that spewed bursts of danmaku, appearing from the left, the right, in front and behind. And all the while, Yuuno swore he felt like he was being watched, as if a great multitude of eyes were gazing at him from afar.

And then, suddenly, he was... somewhere. Everywhere. Nowhere. Just countless eyes amidst a sea of pulsing violet and red, as far as he could see, all staring at him in rapt attention. Mindboggling, sanity-breaking, a nauseating madness seemed to choke his mind. He couldn’t tell where was up or where was down. Vertigo tore at him.

Where... where was he?!

“My my, when Ran mentioned that I had a visitor, I would not have expected it to be one so... cute!”

A melodious voice, youthful sounding yet possessing an aged wisdom underlying the playfulness. Yuuno whirled around, seeing someone not too far off. A woman, obviously dressed in a deep royal purple and a contrasting white corset that showed off an incredibly wonderful body and bust. Long white gloves hid thin and graceful hands, gently clutching a white parasol with deceptive ease. A pink mob cap sat delicately on luxuriously blonde hair, red ribbon wrapping around it. She sat on... something--Yuuno couldn’t tell-- with devilishly seductive white-pantyhosed legs crossed. Half her face was hidden behind an open fan, though the young man could see that her eyes were a deep gold. Or were they purple? He couldn’t tell in this maddening light. Worse still, she seemed to be upside down -- no, maybe it was he that was in opposite.

“Who’s there?!” Yuuno asked half-heartedly, too entranced by the newcomer to put any more emotion into his voice.

“Mhmm, let’s not worry about that right now. Let’s just say, I am an intermediary. Now, Ran did explain it to me, but I wish to hear it from you, young man. But first, do stand up straight.”

She merely nodded at him and Yuuno suddenly found himself right side up. He was briefly bewildered, but he recovered well enough. He cleared his throat, “I am Yuuno Scrya, Chief Librarian of the Infinite Library. I’ve come here to meet the Lady of Boundaries.”

“And what, pray tell, would you want to meet her for?”

Yuuno looked down on his hands, pushing his focus onto them. Staring too long into this eye-ridden void was apt to drive him insane. “Even if it’s just for a little bit, I want to talk to her, to learn from her. Whereas my friends have all grown in power, I’ve done nothing. Whatever she may be able to teach me, I would be forever grateful.”

“Hm hmm. How interesting! A inhuman human that wants to learn from youkai! My, I don’t think I’ve met anyone this interesting since Reimu and her friends visited!” And it’s been such a long time since they’ve all gotten together too...

“I wouldn’t call myself inhuman...”

“Oh? A magician, then, if you believe yourself a user of magic? Not only that, but from a land beyond even the planet’s grasp.” Certainly, she had never heard of any Infinite Library. A certain mischievous black and white magician may be interested.

He shook his head, “Even so, it’s more of mathematical equations than the magic you are thinking of.”

“Did not a famous writer once say, that sufficiently advanced technology becomes indistinguishable from magic? To most eyes, it may as well be, young man. You will have to think differently, if you’ve any hope to find any benefit from youkai.”

“Perhaps,” Yuuno nodded. “I would be willing to do anything.”

“Anything? Hmm. Even lose your own humanity?”

The boy blinked, “What?”

The woman’s fan snapped shut, revealing a hauntingly beautiful face. A playful, if concealed smile was on her lips. “Youkai may have a human’s appearance, but they are not. With power comes corruption, and a human body transforms to that of a supernatural. All too frequently, we become the monsters we hunt, and in doing so, we leave others behind. Are you willing to do that?”

To go from lagging behind to leaving them behind... that was something he didn’t think about.

“Hesitating, are we? I don’t blame you. The price for power is often too steep for most to take, and for some, too late. If you wish, I can guide you back to beyond the Boundary...”

“No. That won’t be necessary,” Yunno gazed at the woman with strange conviction, causing her to blink once in surprise.

“Oho?”

“I’ve already decided to come this far. To just turn away... it would be a waste for me, and I’m sure Miss Ran would be disappointed to hear that I left so quickly. And I feel... I feel that, at the very least, even if I change, I can walk beside them for a little while. Perhaps it would be better that way, rather than left behind and forgotten. Then, the only thing I would regret is not having done this earlier.”

He lapsed into silence after that, the woman watching him silently. This was something he could not handle lightly or frivolously, yet, what choice did he have? Perhaps there were safer ways, but this was the closest one.

Yeah.

For them, for all his friends, he would become something else. That was an acceptable sacrifice.

“Ufufu... I was curious as to what might have pierced the Boundary so easily yet so... gently. Then, Ran comes in, telling me about some child was flying up the long stairs, and he had done remarkably well at grazing danmaku. And so polite and cute too!” the lady smiled cheerily, snapping her fan open and waving it gently. She looked at Yuuno, staring right into his eyes. “But I can see you are no child, despite your appearance. These are the responsibilities of adults many years your senior. Do you truly believe you can handle this?”

The mage steeled himself, his hands clenched into ready fists. “It’s everything or nothing.”

“That’s a good boy,” she looked at him with a gentle, almost fond look. And suddenly, her eyes hardened. “Yukari Yakumo is my name. I am the Youkai of Boundaries that you seek. I will grant you this audience, but only if you can prove to me your spirit and fortitude. I will not listen to the mewling of a child or weakling.

“Can you survive?” she smiled wickedly behind her fan a dozens upon dozens of gaps opened all around, a strange power glowing from within each of them. “My Necrofantasia?”

What Yuuno could learn would be naturally limited by what he does and does not have any talent for.

If Yuuno really has no talent for shooting magic, as opposed to not learning such for various other possible reasons, then I don't think he's going to learn Fantasy Orbs/Seal.

Based just on what he already uses, Yukari and Reimu are the best people to learn from.

Learning from just about anyone else would suppose that he had previously unknown or underestimated or underutilized talents.

And if THAT was his only "problem", he could have stayed home and learned from his friends.


Instead, his problem seems to be that Boundary Mages like himself are as rare as Bombardment mages like Nanoha. Nanoha because no one else is strong enough to do that much, and Yuuno because boundary-fields are just that damn tricky and no one likes having to learn more than one to do their jobs.

There's Shamal, who could teach him what she knows about teleportation and fields. And he could get a Device like hers that facilitates his ability with those spells.

But in this story, he decided to look for someone who knew even more about these fields of expertise than even Shamal. Someone who might embody the very concept of boundaries.

As an explanation for why Yuuno sought out Gensokyo, it's okay. As a solution for growing stronger, it's a little far-fetched, considering the options already available to him.

Now, if you don't choose to dismiss the Huckebein as discontinuity, as I'm tempted to do, then it makes absolute sense that Yuuno would seek out Yukari and accept the possiblity of being a youkai. Because none of his skills will work against the Eclipse, or work with AEC technology.


Though, really... what prevents Yuuno from learning Alchemic Chain? If summoners are glorified teleporters, then Yuuno IS a pretty damn good teleporter.

Well he is pretty good with Binding spells so is there anybody in Gensokyo who can teach him that.

I would think he would be pretty good with teleportation spells already because if he learned his spells to assist in his archaeology being fast on the draw to get out of cave ins would be good.

Binding and sealing techniques are generally only used by the "religious" folk.

Reimu the shrine maiden, Sanae the wind-priestess turned youkai-hunting shrine maiden, and Byakuren the former Buddhist nun turned black magician turned youkai Buddhist nun.

Byakuren might be able to teach Yuuno some things. But they work on two different styles, and we don't know his talent for "body-strengthening magic" (which is Increase/Boost magic in Nanoha terms) or matter transmutation.

Yukari probably also has binding and sealing tricks, and Ran almost certainly has the same with her onmyoudo / black magic / body-strengthening techniques.

If Yuuno becomes a youkai, and thus becomes stronger, Ran and Yukari can teach him how to bind and empower a familiar. Which he could probably already do, but which might not be very effective for him.

However, a familiar generally isn't going to help against the Huckebein.

He could learn some binding and sealing from Eirin. If I remember correctly, she sealed away the Earth so that the bridge between the Earth and Moon would no longer exist. Her arts probably wouldn't be as versatile as the sealing arts of the religious folks, but still something useful to learn. Plus she'd at least be someone good to work with as a fellow intellectual, even if their occupational fields are very different.

Keine could be another one, with her ability to eat/seal and create/unseal history. But that could get wonky depending on whether is is a learned ability (which could open up a whole different issue) or something she was born with.

Patchouli might not be a good one to learn from owing to her style, but she'd be a good person to visit so he could access the Viole Library. The problem would be getting him OUT of the library.

If you want to get into more advanced teleportation, you'd have to talk to Yukari.

Amy chuckled softly as she and Filia listened to their guest's story. When said guest looked at them flatly, they both started giggling heavily. "Har har, it's not funny, you two."

Amy put her hand over her mouth to try and stop her giggling. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Miyuki, it's just, well, it's hard for me not to find it funny."

Rubbing her forehead, Miyuki just groaned softly. "I think it's kind of serious."

Filia took a deep breath and smiled softly. "I'm sorry, I think my pregnancy is affecting me. But, Miyuki, I don't understand the problem."

Miyuki sighed and leaned forward onto the counter. "You have to understand, it's not the fact that he's younger than me that bothers me too much."

Filia sighed softly and leaned back against the kitchen counter. "Unless I get lucky, Miyuki, nearly every mate and partner I will find will likely be centuries younger than myself." Both Amy and Miyuki looked at the blonde Dragoness as she looked upwards. "...It's not like it's completely unheard of, Dragons falling for members of the other species, but it's rare. Humans live for such a short amount of time, a little over a century if they're lucky. I'm over a millenia old, and yet I'm the youngest Golden Dragon of my former tribe."

When Filia sighed, Miyuki winced and looked at the counter. "I... I'm sorry. Never thought about that."

Filia sighed heavily. "It's not something that we like to think about, but there's a reason that there's not too many mixed breeds on our world. The non-human partner lives far too long."

"Isn't there some..." Miyuki started to say before Filia sighed softly.

Miyuki sighed and looked down. Now her mood felt worse because Filia was upset. Normally someone being upset wouldn't make her feel this bad, but the fact that she was already feeling somewhat down amplified the feelings of making Filia feel bad to something horrible. Most people never understood that and would likely just automatically think that the person was being moody.

"Miyuki?"

The swordswoman looked at Amy and bit her lip lightly. "The fact that my sisters both like him, and he's got other girls his age that like him, that's what bothers me."

Amy wasn't sure what to say about that.

Miyuki chuckled and took her glasses off before dropping her head on the counter a few times. "Heh... It's always my luck. The guys I find myself attracted to end up having at least a half dozen different suitors after them at any one moment."

Amy sighed softly and patted Miyuki on the shoulder. "It could be worse..." Miyuki gave her a despondant look. "You could end up becoming attracted to some sort of trans-dimensional entity who's only using you to get close to your family and kill them."

Miyuki blinked a few times, before a smile slowly creeped across her face. "With my luck, I'd probably end up getting kidnapped and used as bait to try and get one of my sisters killed in an overly complicated plan that's not well thought out."

The two shared a laugh at that for a moment. Amy smiled at Miyuki and patted her shoulder again. "I'm going to make sure that Filia's okay, but if you want my advice, let him know how you feel, okay?" Amy turned and started to walk away before turning to look back at Miyuki. "I nearly lost Chrono to Filia if she hadn't been willing to share and I hadn't told him how I felt. At the very least, let him know that you really do care about him."

Miyuki sighed heavily. Even if it was that simple, which it probably wasn't, it still was hard to do.

Watching Amy leave, Miyuki quietly got up and left the building.

"You okay?" Amy asked as she sat down on the bed next to Filia. She then yelped as Filia rolled over, grabbed her arm and pulled her down onto the bed. "Filia?"

"I'm scared." Filia trembled slightly as she clung to Amy. "Up until now, I... I didn't think of..." She was silenced as Amy gave her a sudden kiss. The blonde's face went totally red, her eyes wide, before she started to relax into the kiss.

"Feeling better." Amy smiled and Filia nodded, which caused Amy to hug her. "And, Filia..." She rubbed the blonde's back. "I don't know about Chrono, we can talk to him when he gets back next week, but, if something does happen to myself..." She kissed Filia on the forehead. "I wouldn't want you to be sad forever."

"But..." Filia looked at Amy, who smiled at her sadly. "But you and Chrono..."

"We likely wouldn't be there after two centuries. Even with the Bureau's level of technology, there are limits how long a human can live. But," Amy grinned at Filia as she grabbed her co-wife's shirt and started to pull it up, "we have time, and right now..." She grinned as she felt Filia's tail slip under the waist-band of her pants and start pulling them down. "Let's focus on something else."

Filia nodded, her face slightly red. Oh well, Chrono wasn't around and Amy was, and right now, she needed some relief of this stress.

Yuuno blinked as there was a knocking on his door. Looking up from his books, he called for the person to enter the room. "Miyuki?"

The older girl smiled at him softly. "Hey, Yuuno, I was wondering, you wanna go and check out the new mall?"

Yuuno blinked, before nodding. "Sure."

Miyuki smiled as he got up and walked with her to the door. It was small, but it was a start.

Well, it`s a good concept you touch here - despite her look Filia is a dragon and her lifespan are much longer than human one. And her fear of outliving her beloved ones is understandable and could be a good plot twist in future. Or maybe mazoku lord Lucifer can do something nice and prolong Amy and Chrono lifespan in order to impress Lindy . Or Levi-chan can do something mean and radically shortening lifespan of three lovebirds.

Amy chuckled softly as she and Filia listened to their guest's story. When said guest looked at them flatly, they both started giggling heavily. "Har har, it's not funny, you two."

Amy put her hand over her mouth to try and stop her giggling. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Miyuki, it's just, well, it's hard for me not to find it funny."

Rubbing her forehead, Miyuki just groaned softly. "I think it's kind of serious."

Filia took a deep breath and smiled softly. "I'm sorry, I think my pregnancy is affecting me. But, Miyuki, I don't understand the problem."

Miyuki sighed and leaned forward onto the counter. "You have to understand, it's not the fact that he's younger than me that bothers me too much."
