We're back! And what better way to recap the season and the girls than with each girl talking about their story and relationship with Kazuya as we get shots of them in multiple outfits .

The new Opening isn't by the Peggy's, unfortunately, but it is by Chico of Honeyworks and is a pretty cute theme with some cute animations for all the girls .

Did Kazuya buy any Chizuru photos? Some of those looked really nice .

Oh hey, Sumi! I wasn't expecting to see her. It's really nice that she went out of her way to see Chizuru's play and give her some support .

Knowing what Chizuru is normally like I'm kind of surprised she ended up playing a comedy relief character so effectively. Like, who would have thought she'd play a dumb, incompetent, and boisterous female ninja and do it so effectively that it seems completely genuine? That's acting for you, and she still manages to steal the show. And of course we get ninja Chizuru who looks amazing in that outfit, especially the legs .

I'm kind of surprised with all the comedy that they'd straight up kill off Nene .

I wonder why Sumi didn't greet Kazuya? Did she like how he was so enraptured by the play? Does she have an idea about his feelings for Chizuru ?

Sucks for Chizuru though...she worked so hard, busted her butt to get the role right, and stole the show...and the scout has the female lead in his sights because she knew him as a kid .

Chizuru is all tsundere about Kazuya showing up at the play, but you can tell that she appreciates him showing up and his praise for the play. And just when she's written herself and her chances at being a major actor off, Kazuya is there to tell her (along with the season 1 OP) how amazing she is, how great she was in the play, and that he'll pay her however much he can through the Rent-a-Girlfriend gig to keep her dream alive no matter the expense to himself or his finances. That's some dedication! Of course she's still tsundere enough to shove her heel into his foot and then march off in a huff, but Kazuya still got through to her .

Well, at least Shiori had the decency to call Chizuru and tell her how much she owes to Chizuru's acting, even if that doesn't make Chizuru feel any better...but Kazuya scheduling dates for them turns into a surprising pick me up .

That kind of thing sucks for Chizuru. Although on the positive side nothing can be taken away from her skill. And she's still building her own connections. Be it through that theater itself, the people running that specific production she was in, and she left a mark on the audience. The scout thing is too bad. But she's on the right track.

Not that it's much comfort in the moment. Until she gets that break it's a tough pill to swallow and she has to keep gathering funds in order to keep up the effort.

And I'm not exactly sure how I'm reading that call with Shiori at the end either. I'd probably feel more comfortable if she was more coldly calculating. Because if she doesn't realize the only reason she's moving ahead is because of connections then she'll hit a hard wall when she hits the wall that she doesn't have the ability to clear.

Agreed. At least Mami knew exactly what she was doing. This girl is just naive. Why does she have to do our girl Chizuru dirty like that?

It's been a while. Season two opens up nicely and our baka MC decides to devote his time and efforts to pay for his rental gf's dream, while blurting out in public what she does for her occupation. Talk about embarrassing!

I don't think Kazuya has to worry about telling his family about Chizuru. It's not like Chizuru is going to tell his family that they broke up right away like that. She can just keep pretending. Renting her doesn't have to do with his family acknowledging the status of their actual and fake relationship.

Mami on the other hand, she is not going to leave Kazuya alone anytime soon, is she?

Though I have issues with the series...I can't deny that the animation and direction is incredibly good. It almost makes me angry.

Sumi is a doll. She will get some very good scenes....if they cover the best arc of the manga....this will be way better than season 1 because we will finally get Chizuru's backstory.

Kazuya is more than happy to continue to pay for Chizuru and keep her financially stable as she reaches for her dreams, but she'd rather he not dedicate so much time and money to a fake girlfriend when she has other clients and he has Mami...even though Chizuru has no idea how twisted Mami really is...and Ruka...even though Ruka is, well, Ruka .

I mean, it's pretty clear on Kazuya's list of priorities that Chizuru and helping her takes precedence over whatever kind of "girlfriend" Ruka is to him, and he'll use any excuse to be with Chizuru over Ruka. The only thing Ruka's got going for her is that he finds himself tempted by how cute she is, really. Kazuya knows he's in love with Chizuru and Ruka is just kind of someone he's stuck with for one reason or another. I mean, who asks an actual girlfriend to let them date a rental girlfriend? Like, c'mon .

I do appreciate that Kazuya wants to spend less time with Chizuru's "ideal girlfriends" act and more with the real Chizuru, standoffish and cool as she is by comparison. Chizuru doesn't see the point, but he wants get to better know her as herself .

It was nice to see Chizuru invite Kazuya to something when she's off the clock...even if it was to ward off guys hitting on her (because everyone in the universe has to notice and call out how attractive Chizuru is) and because she just needed to kill time before they saw her grandma. But her glee at getting a home run and wanting him to recognize and share in that joy with her was totally genuine. And she doesn't seem him as a stranger or a creep anymore, even if she says they're just "neighbors." Still an improvement though .

Batting cage Chizuru! With the ponytail, coat off, and frilly skirt swaying at all the right angles !

It's nice to see Kazuya has a grandmother in his life who is actually nice and supportive, even if she teases him a lot. But she seems to see something in him that nobody else does and recognizes that he might be exactly the kind of guy Chizuru needs. He may be imperfect, but he's got a big heart .

Chizuru acts so confident and solitary, but it's just that...an act. She's actually really needy and much more emotionally vulnerable than she projects, but only her grandmother knows the "real" Chizuru, and she feels Chizuru needs someone like Kazuya to be there to catch her when the act inevitably drops .

Little girl Chizuru looked absolutely adorable .

The ED is really nice! A soothing, cute, song featuring the girls in scenic locales and various snazzy and cute outfits. Although it was kind of surreal seeing them all as gal pals and hanging out in this ED when that is not at all reflected in the actual content of the show .

Well, "perfect" Chizuru takes a tumble when she doesn't have her key and needs to crash with Kazuya...and then Mami shows up...and Ruka is fully prepared to censor any sexy time .

Episode 2 starts and continues Kazuya's awkwardness around Mizuhara, but at least we get some progress where he states he prefers her normal self and not her acting self.

The after work hours to kill time at the batting cage was both a blessing and a killjoy for Kazuya. It's not until they get to the hospital where Mizuhara's grandma plays some jokes on him, but manages to get him to promise to be the strong one for her granddaughter. It's a nice revelation because deep down, even the most confident people do have nerves and can revert back to their inner scared/weaker selves from time to time. Kazuya understands that he'll have to step up to the plate (pun intended) for Mizuhara in the future.

Oh how (in)convenient! Mizuhara has lost her key! How on earth did that happen? Anyways, let's not dwell on that but the fact that she needs a place to crash and luckily, she has a neighbor who might just let her in.

^ Ending sequence is nice, and sort of reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V's ending where the 4 girl protagonists seem to get along in some fantasy alternate reality. (Rest in peace, Kazuki Takahashi).*

*For those unaware, the creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga/anime and OCG/TCG card game was found dead while snorkeling off the coast of Okinawa on 06 July 2022. He was only 60 years old (would have been 61 this year).

While this is not the correct anime specific thread for this, I will briefly say that because of the anime, manga, and especially the card game, I became involved with the TCG here in the US for the past 20+ years (on/off irl/online). I still have all my cards, playmats, binders, posters and various other accessories. The memories and interactions from attending events, dueling others and making many friends along the way were all due to his creations. Kazuki Takahashi is the true King of Games.

Chizuru's skirt was so frilly and cute. I could wear that too

(don't worry; I have a small waist and thighs xD)

Grandma Sayuri is the only one who knows the real Chizuru.

Ruka annoyed me in this ep and that's only going to get worse

Pffft, all those tissue paper lying around when Chizuru's looking for him to shelter her. I definitely want to see how that plays out.

Ok, so I'm supposed to be convinced that Chizuru's way of honing her skills of acting is reasonable. Is it really?

Kazuya's reacting about how you would expect from having Chizuru in his room, awkward and horny, but I have to admit even I readily assumed Chizuru was planning to stay the night with him...but no, she just wanted access to the balcony to see if she could get into her room that way. Well, at least Kazuya got to oggle her butt and legs wriggling as she tried to check her lock, and got to feel up her lower half. Not too shabby .

And of course they end up on top of each other...I guess it is progress that she told him to get off instead of immediately slugging him. Or maybe she would've slugged him after he got off .

As if Kazuya didn't have enough to deal with...Mami returns! And right outside his apartment door. That he left unlocked. Uh oh. I mean, what ex-girlfriend visits their exes place for the first time just out of the blue and then opens their door when they see it unlocked? Well, it's hard to restrain Mami, but at least she had enough sense to not waste her time going inside his place. They would've totally gotten away with it had she not seen Chizuru's purse laying there...and boy, if looks could kill. She's probably already plotting something for these two as payback .

Chizuru genuinely opens up to Kazuya for once, revealing her family situation. Her father abandoned her, her mom died when she was young, she was basically raised by her grandparents and lost her grandfather when she was in high school. All she really has left is her grandma, which explains a lot about their relationship. And Chizuru's determination to be an actress even stems from a promise she made with her grandfather. Chizuru really embodying what it means to b a struggling actress overcoming adversity, even if she doesn't think very highly of herself .

I guess it's nice knowing that, at some point, Kazuya's grandma actually did dote on him. When he was a baby .

Kazuya thinks by comparison he's had it much luckier with a stable and involved family unit, and having his family to rely on and fall back to despite his personal issues, and he can understand wanting to repay back what you were given by family. Which is why he thinks Chizuru is so awesome and impressive .

That eye quiver from Chizuru...she also basically used her Rental Girlfriend job as an excuse to say she'd be willing to keep being with him .

Hey, Chizuru acknowledged he exists at college! And now Kazuya is on cloud 9, and self-reflecting on how Chizuru feels about him, but here comes Mami to keep him on his toes even more in true Mami fashion .
