ADDITIONAL RULES FOR Higurashi no Naku Koroni
  • Make sure you read the English wikipedia article for Higurashi no Naku Koroni before you ask questions!!!
  • Feel free to share your theories and speculations. In fact, I encourage you to do so as this is what makes this series interesting.
  • I am designating Sushi-Y and Freakman to lead the discussion in the correct path without spoilers as they have played the game in advance. I put confidence in them that they will recognize a member has spilled the beans too far if any other members has begun to play the game.
  • SPOILERS FAR ADVANCED THAN THE CURRENT AIRED ANIME EPISODE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. THIS INCLUDES THOSE IN SPOILER TAGS!!!. People tend to peek at spoiler tags; especially when they do not know such tag is meant for the episode, only to find it spilling the beans too far advanced in the game storyline.

The character design and the aspect of the backgrounds are really nice. I suppose Animation should be quite nice as well, as I have faith in Studio DEEN. Especially after their work with Fate/Stay Night.

@kj1980 - I wished I lived in Japan... I wouldn't even care about the region

One thing I wonder Kj : I know it's somewhat borderline and may sound weird but :
All of us foreigners download anime on Winny/Share/Torrent, yet you prefer waiting for anime to air at impossible hours so you can watch it on TV.
Do you refuse to commit to anything illegal as downloading anime ?

I'd rather show my respect to the staff by watching in front of the TV as it was meant to be. Besides, why go all through the trouble of downloading off of Winny three~four hours after its initial airing when you can watch it live?

Also, I usually don't stay up late to watch an anime show, unless it's something I really love. Most of the time, I record them onto my HD recorder and watch them in the morning or port it to my iPod to watch them on my way to work.

Good point. When I go on 2channel and see people complaining that they missed a broadcast and are desperate to see it, I feel guilty, too. But not guilty enough not to watch. The feeling of being so close to Japan is pretty great. Modern times. One world.

Actually, I was just thinking that I'd like to see the full 30 minutes, commercials and all. That would (a) bring me closer to the real thing, and (b) degrade the experience enough to encourage purchase of DVDs.

Only got the raw to hear Eiko's new song, so I'm holding off watching the whole episode... but I remember reading a worry that the first few episodes would make people think this was almost a harem show until the main story started...

Looks like the rest of the episode's pretty happy until the end, but still... the OP song is plenty foreboding enough, too. 24th May's going on the calendar.

Yeah that's actually a pretty neat choice
Good way to get the viewers into the show.
About the first episode :
Feels good to see Hinamizawa and our Bukatsuin animated. Chidori Kaname (well her seiyuu) as Mion works great I think. Rena hmm... gotta see how she can handle the "Uso da !" scene (although the "Shiranai" was well done)

Yeah, that together with the opening is a good start and should keep the viewers interested since most people expect too much stuff happen in the first episode and forget other aspects which are important in the beginning (introducing the characters, some important bits and facts about the place/time everything happens, etc.) thus are easily bored if nothing out of the ordinary happens. But that wasn't quite the fact in the first episode. There were foreshadowing bits in the episode as well, so it's safe to say that people won't put that one off after the first episode with wrong impressions. :)

Anyway, the best first episode of this season so far. Opening is a winner (should I say as expected? ;) ). Ending was actually quite nice as well. The characters were enjoyable, nice voice-acting, the comedy bits were funny. Overall a good mix of everything. Hmm, yeah, not much to say aside from that, just that it didn't disappoint my expectations. :P

Edit:

Since I took a few screens earlier, here they are in case somebody's interested. Beware of spoiler. ;)

Hai, my comments.

First of all, they didn't choose to start with the Frederica Bernkastel's poem and Keiichi's train scene, and chose the _____ scene from Onikakushi instead. I suppose this is for the impact value, and it's well done.

The OP was rather unexpected for me, not that it didn't suit the anime, but it was more like a reminder of "what Higurashi no Naku Koroni was all about" for me. As a game player, I know everything in the story, but you can only feel the mood of the games when you play them. This OP, then, really helped me remember the game's (well, the serious parts anyway) mysterious, scary, and yet oddly beautiful atmosphere.

As for the contents, episode 1 ranks a "pretty good" in my book. The deformed faces and bodies seem to be slightly overused. I know this is to provide a contrast between the comedic and serious moments, but it kind of makes the distinction too obvious (that is, you can pretty much tell whether a character is joking around or not simply by looking at whether or not his or her face/body is "deformed").

Episode 1 ended quite nicely, I really loved Rena's calm looking face as she walked with that signature hatchet of hers.

Musics. Unfortunately, other than the higurashi (cicada) crying sound, I don't think any tracks from the game made it into this episode at all (well, technically, higurashi sounds are sfx, not music ^^; ). Particularly unfortunate for me is the lack of "Digital Network" and "Orange Iro no Shi". The anime itself lacked any memorable tracks, well, so far anyway.

All the drama CD voice actors made it to the anime, so no complaints there. ^^ *needs more Rika-chan*

I was pretty interested to hear Katakiri Rekka's ED theme song, although it's in English (well, the pronounciation wasn't perfect, but at least it was reasonably understandable). The song actually had a western pop feel to it, which isn't too bad. Nothing fancy in the ED animation, just some calm scenes, although I think that's a better choice than some hyper-energetic dancings, considering Higurashi's story.

Overall, 8/10. It was within my expectations, with a few disappointments, but also a few pleasant surprises as well.

Edit: I linked my favorite scene from this episode as an animated gif in my sig ^^; Rena + Cleaver Axe = Win

Wow, bringing the brutality at the very beginning is a great intro to an otherwise seemingly dull and "typical" moe~ anime that the first half is full of. Blood splatters and beatings aside, I wished that they added the SFX of bone crushing as well (I'm sadistic ww)

The OP was....actually really good. Shimamiya Eiko's vocals is dark yet eeriely soothing, a perfect fit for the title. And from the perspective of a person that has played the game, the OP sequences incorporated tidbits of what to expect here and there.

Spoiler:

Aside from Rena's (well almost everyone's) big hairdo, her short skirt, and Mion's green necktie, I say it kept the game truthfully. From Keiichi's intro meeting up with Rena and Mion, going to the school, seeing a back shot of Ms. Chie (laughs)!

Keeping all the seiyuus from the drama CD intact was a good choice, although I still have a hard time getting the image of "ah~ Vanilla-san..." (Nomad from "Galaxy Angel") from the voice of Satoko, which is played by Kanai Mika.

Rika-chama's nipa~ made my day. tera moesu!!!

That great fish-eye perspective of Keiichi's facial expression totally brings out the premonitions of things to come. And ending it with Rena wielding the cleave-axe, nice build up.

The ED was also good, but unfortunately either my English skills has degraded or Rekka-san's English is undecipherable, I couldn't understand most of it.

First impression-wise: I'm very satisfied. Now it's just the hopes that Studio Deen can keep it up...

If anything Kj, it's your Engrish skills that have degraded.

I think this will be more f*ked up than Narutaru.

Which is a good thing.

I really love the OP and ED, very dark and serious, as should befit this style of show. It's gonna blow away all the pseudo-dark but resultant cheesy recent shows (ala Jigoku Shoujo)

Well in the early chapters, the traps helped build the character of Satoko imho. So far, she seems somehow unbelievably quiet (did she ever hide behind Rika -like in the bento scene in ep1- in the game ? I can't remember)

If in doubt, always check the Fansub wiki on http://fansub.andrewlb.com for the spring season. The group listed to fansub the show is indeed subbing it.

Too bad that the anime version of the OP has so little lyrics. It's got a really nice upbeat and very nice vocals. Eiko-tama~ :3

I watched the first episode, and I've a theory (already!) I want to test out on the people who've played the game...

Spoiler:

Also, where would I go to get the sound novel itself? Amazon.co.jp?

EDIT: might have to go to specialty stores like animate.

Anyway, some introductions to the series ("the same day in June every year for four years") made me think of Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery".
If you haven't read it,
please do so, it's one of the greatest American short stories ever.
I went and re-read The Lottery, and guess what? The lottery is every year in June as well!
