Rare for me is Sentimental Journey. It's a 12 episode series based on the game Sentimental Graffiti. I saw it once, I wanna see it again, but it's really damn hard to find nowdays. The only thing that feeds my obsession of that is my folder full of pics of the 12 girls; my favorite is Wakana Ayasaki.

I'm sure a lot of people on here may have seen it but for me The Iressponsible Captain Tylor is my personal pick just for the fact that nobobdy I've ever talked to knows what it is or has seen it except for one person. Its one of my favorite animes, but alas I don't know too many people who have seen it.

Took me quite a long while to find even one piece of Kimagure Orange Road on the net to see why it was so liked.

It was also a fair task tracking down an actual DVD (though I suspect its a bootleg, it does actually have an english dub as well as japanese original track&englishsubtitles) of Tsukikage Ran.
I think you need to be a teenager to get seriously hooked by this series. I did..

They recently release re-master DVDs for collection. (Japanese only)

On the other hand, the artbook of orange road called "Madoka" by Akemi Takada probably is one of the most expensive/hard to find artbook around.

I'm resurrecting this thread!

The rarest anime I've ever seen was "Magic Boy", the 1961 english dub of the 1959 movie "Shônen Sarutobi Sasuke". It was never officially released on VHS, LD, or DVD. The only way I saw it was when the Turner Classic Movies channel aired it back in September of 2003. For some reason they only aired it once and it was on at 5:30am in my area! I was really dedicating myself to watching it one way or another so I set a tape to record it. I recorded the one and only airing they had on a VHS tape and I'm probably the only one who did it. So how is that for rare?

All I have to do is somehow transfer it to DVD so I can keep it forever.

I saw Shinzo on FOX Kids when I was about 13...

I never got to watch the whole thing because as usual with satelight T.V they decided to stop showing it halfway through..

I really want a copy but the only one I have found was Italian on Ebay..didnt have english subs either..

I've also seen Black Lagoon, Zombie Loan, Kimegure Orange Road, Chocolate Underground, Strike Witches, Tokyo Mew Mew, Druaga no To - the Aegis of Uruk and Sekirei

The orginal Dangaioh OVA (not the butchered Manga one) on VHS (didn't have sidekick wave sub though). Also several episodes of one called Peacock King, Robot Carnival, Gal Force, some pirate one called Ellcia

Probably Strange Dawn. I can see how the concept will turn away many after episode 1. The OP theme is one of my all-time favourites.

Yeah lol. But it's hardly rare from my POV, I think I saw it broadcast on some obscure channel a while ago.
(couldn't have been more then a week or two ago)

Loved that series, though because it aired like 5 episodes a week I guess I missed some episodes. If that series was even showed in Switzerland, then I guess it was quite poular x)

The fact it has a forum here and hundreds of posts in each thread means at least people have heard of it.
They're praised and mentioned every chance anyone gets. Rare is the last thing these two are.

It has dozens of dubs. Everyone's heard of it and it has fans all over the world. It's also so "rare" they made a crap load of episodes and its still going I think.

Think of: very few fans, never heard of name... or just simply obscure and forgotten.
Unique or special are not the type of rare anime for this thread.
