As someone who watches Dancing with the Stars from time to time, I've seen the poses that these characters are in from before. As such I'm not really weirded out by anything in the anime.
My biggest complaint actually is the actual animation itself. I get it, it's anime with a limited budget, but still, most of the competition was just still shots. Even Shizuku/Kiyoharu's dance we didn't get to see much of the footwork, and it really disappointed me that the ballroom dancing isn't being shown properly. I guess it makes sense that they decided to animate more Kiyo/Tatara's practice since it actually part of their character development, but still, I wanted to be shown how good Kiyo/Shizuku are instead of just being told that they won the competition. And whoah, Shizuku and Kiyoharu are childhood friends? And clearly Shizuku is very interested? I'm so happy with this revelation, since I don't have to obssess over Shizuku anymore. Whew, dodged a bullet there... Also, don't worry Shizuku. Kiyoharu saying he doesn't care about Tatara stealing you away as a dance partner is just his tsundere stoic self showing up. XD

The second episode was as interesting as the first one. Shizuku already having a partner was no surprise, but I didn't think they would have such a long and deep history. It's going to be tough for Tatara to steal her away from him. Kiyoharu doesn't seem like a bad guy at all, so I'm actually not sure who to root for anymore. He appeared to be lazy at first, but the ending showed it's far from being the case. He works hard when no one is watching.

Wait, the team that animated Haikyuu is doing this anime? We got a lot of fluidity in Haikyuu, but a lot of still shots in Ballroom. I'm going to be severely disappointed if we don't start getting fluid sequences like Yuri On Ice did.
Story wise, wasn't a big fan of the female trainer. That part just wasn't amusing to me. But the rest of the episode was good. Those dancers really do transform from everyday people to works of art on stage! |

Episode 3:
Tatara entering the Mikasa Cup arena must be a very interesting experience. Trouble came as they can't even find Hyoudou. Tatara had to replace him so I think it's a neat opportunity for him to shine. It shouldn't be surprising that others got nervous since Tatara isn't as experienced as Hyoudou despite showing potential. Pretty smooth pacing so far. I think they are adapting the character expressions pretty well to in particular Tatara when he got onto the dance floor. Shizuku's role to lead him with the dance combined with Tatara following steps somehow made it work lol. Pretty entertaining episode.

To me this series feels really strange and unnatural - why the hell would anyone skip the basics and go straight for the competition form? Then again, I guess in countries such as Japan, where ballroom dancing has very little or no tradition, there's probably no use for the basics as ballroom dancing most likely doesn't exist outside the competitions ...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who chuckled when Tatara commented on that one dancer having a long neck.
I'm not a big fan of basically just throwing Tatara into the water when he doesn't even know how to swim. It could have ended in a disaster. It nearly did, in fact. Sengoku was lucky his hunch proved correct. Regarding the ending, I'm curious what Kiyoharu meant. Did he mean he wants Shizuku back or his dancing moves? Or just his spot in the competition?

Agree with Kanon about the neck comment.
I'm pretty sure the judges will notice that the dancers switched during the next dance step, so i guess that gorilla really will win. Kiyoharu seems to up his game in the next ep.

Did Kiyoharu just happen to fall down those stairs, or was he pushed by someone, like perhaps the gorilla?
Or did he already have an injury whose weakness led to the fall? He was carrying tape so we might assume the injury happened before the competition. Like Kanon, it wasn't clear to me what Kiyoharu wanted back from Tatara. I don't think he is referring to Shizuku if the Amazon translation is correct. He wouldn't say "give it back" to refer to a girl. Likely he meant his choreography.

That Swin or Sink Baptism of fire for Tatara was something didn't expected but was funny and amazing, seems Tatara finally found his call and dancing with his crush shizuku must hbe been something.
Seems the whole thing with Kiyoharu seems a piece is lacking And yes Kiyoharu more refer the whole coreograph and moment, remember how he is so melancholy with dancing and now Tatara make it looks so easy might have hit a nerve for him. |

I'm afraid he had a career ending injury, and what he wants back is his future as a dancer. Which Tatara didn't take and can't give back in any case, but it does look like Tatara took his place and Kiyoharu isn't in his right mind. |

- how old do you think "non younger anime fans" are? It was a century ago! - how is he relevant? I mean, sure, they subbed in Tatara (I can't help but think it's more of a prank than an actual ploy meant to achieve anything other than Sengoku's amusement), but everything else is different. If anything, there's a bit of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. |

But the point is, Tatara himself would have had nothing to with Hyodo being injured, even if Gorilla did (which I don't think he did).
As the Pipp/Gehrig thing, well, first of all it was a joke. But Pipp was the starter, got hurt, and was replaced by a guy who went on to become a star.
