Of course, doesn't help when the Type 10 resembles a Leopard II

Hearing the in-character Yukari doing the narration, plus "senshado" every so often (but that was a commercial?) was fairly surreal.

Perhaps I'm just accustomed to R. Lee Ermey.

Tonight, you pukes will sleep with your tanks. You will give your tank a loli's name because this is the only moe you people are going to get. Your days of finger-banging Miku-Hatsuon through her pretty blue-striped panties are over! You're married to this piece. This armor of steel and diesel. And you will be faithful! Port, hut!

I'm going to go ahead and predict that of the three mecha anime being shown this season, none of them will have an antagonist mecha more intimidating than the Maus was.

Also, does anyone know what the background music was that was playing in the finale, when the M3 Lee was fighting the Elefant and JTiger?

So apparently Yukari's VA is in-character while narrating the documentary.
Whoa, I thought it was fan-made. They are actually doing a real documentary with her voice? I hope it gets subbed.

The Origins of Senshado

Ok. The following is my translation of The Origins of Senshado, sourcing both the original text and Tiger603's work on gamer.com.tw. I posted it first on 4chan.

The most convincing explanation to the origins of Senshasho would be that it originated in Japan from mounted Naginata-do and from horseback jousting duels in Europe.

On the other hand, it has also been suggested that the sport originated from competitions of horse pulled two-wheeled battle-wagon such as Chariots and Quadriga.

It is accepted that female charioteers existed since a charioteer of small build would be advantageous in this sort of competition, and that the the charioteers were cladded when it was common practice for the ancient Olympic athletes to compete in the nude.

Female participation in Chariot races sharply increased when Cynisca, the daughter of the Spartan king Archidamus II, won in the battle-wagon racing event in the Olympiad. (the victor was the horse owner, not the rider of the horse)

During Roman times, Gladiatrices (female gladiators) would race in chariot events donning dazzling, beautiful costumes as they compete in chariot races became incredibly popular, as these garments flutter about during the races and was highly provocative of a sight as they tear apart in engagements.

Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Eastern empire liked chariot races far more than gladiatorial combat. However, due to the costly expense to maintain this sport as the Byzantine decline, chariot racing died with the empire. As this practice did not spread other powers, it is commonly accepted that chariot racing events were not the origins of Senshado.

Chariot competition that were derived from combat skill trainings carried on, no matter the time or the place. This is no different from how Kenjutsu came from Kendo, recreational archery from Kyūdō and archery, Jujutsu from Judo, Martial Arts from Wrestling and Boxing, and how Shogi and Chess came about.

Jousting tournaments became popular by the 12th Century in Europe, which coincided with the time when the Knightly class became a part of the court. Knights went from warriors that achieved battlefield accolades to a class that value honor and mannerisms, with an emphasis on pledging themselves to the noblewomen.

After Edward III of England had inducted his Queen consort, Philippa of Hainault, into the Order of the Garter, female knights came to abundance as other countries followed suit. These lady knights naturally took part in Jousting tournaments. However, as female are inferior in strength to male, specially made armours for female riders were forged to minimize risks of being wounded.

In the end, with the advent of armored chariots where the rider would operate from behind the steed, the lady knights had adopted war chariots for combat. It is viewed that the progenitor of western Senshado was from the use of these armored chariots.

As for Japan, the foundations of Senshado were laid in Edo period, when the female-centric Naginata-do came into being from the popularity of the heroines of ere.

Namely, figures such as the mythical Heian on the saga of Tomoe Gozen, the concubine of Minamoto no Yoshinaka in their expedition against the Taira clan; that of the exploits of Lady Hangaku Gozen in the same period; the example of Myōrin'ni, who fought against the forces of Shimazu in the defense of Tsurusaki Castle during the warring periods and that of the tales of Tachibana Ginchiyo .

Naginata-do became an essential practice for the wives of the bushi (Samurai) and those under the service of Daimyos.

With the widespread use of machines and the debut of modern weapons, guns were increasingly used in shooting matches and in races of automobiles, airplanes and ships.

Planes, which underwent rapid development and were mass produced in the First World War, found themselves in private ownership, as they gave birth to people who made their living through aerobatics.

Tanks also came into being in the First World War and were mass produced, but they did not develop at the breakneck pace as with airplanes. This led to a surplus of obsolete vehicles that were widely sold as tractor substitutes to the general public.

On the other hand, the First World War proved a tragic war, with unprecedented number of causalities when compared to prior wars.

A female demographic that centered around mothers and housewives rose to oppose tank warfare on public media, advocating that tank warfare and machine-gunning were uncivilized, un-chivalric display of barbaric warfare.

In contrast to tanks, airplanes were advocated since they fight on a one-on-one basis, and broke off combat upon exhausting ammunition or meeting mechanical failures. The airplanes were glorified by the elegance of aerobatic flights at the time as well.

This gave rise to the popular sentiment that 'the male tankers were despicable and "uncool"'.

Aside from the aforementioned developments, automobile racing took off in Europe at the same time.

There were virtually no competing female drivers, as competing in these open-aired racers meant that one's hair would be blown freely about while the face gets dirtied in the event, as one braves the danger of fatalities in racing accidents.

It was by then that female tankers using governmental surplus tanks made their debut. The tanks became popular with the ladies even if the interior of tanks were foul, suffocating and disorganized, as they were rather safe given their encased armor protection.

The introduction of Tankettes that crewed one to two in the 1920s were well received by the female audience as they were easy to operate, and in tankette competition events came to be held. As such, the European Senshado came into being as tankette events were adaptable to the earlier armored chariot jousting events.

Tanks were also imported into Japan, but were unpopular with men who emphasized Bushido, and thus priority was given to equipping female cavalry units. There were fused with mounted naginatado to form Japanese senshado.

There are times when those that don't understand Chivalry and Busdhido would apply tanks widely in warfare, although Senshado, where tanks are a past-time for women, has ensured. But lately there's been a downward trend due to the the birth of Attack Helicopters.

Now for translator's notes:

a) Archidamus II. 476BC-427 BCE. Princess Cynisca, the daughter of Archidamus II, was the first woman equestrian to won in an Olympic event. She bred her steed.
b) It is known that the Gladiatrices fought bare chested. Citing a web page from College of New Rochelle, Tacitus actually recorded how that woman chariot fighter and (plurimi liberti) mostly freedman took part in an event thrown for Nero. Emperor Domitian actually had Gladiatrices fight dwarves at night.
c) Edo Japan was the time of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Starting in 1603 till 1867.
d) Heian era, 794-1185. Capital was Kyoto.
e) Tomoe Gozen. Female warrior of legend. Famed swordswoman.
f) Hangaku Gozen, famed general. Renowned archer.
g) Myōrin'ni. In Kamakura era. Famed for holding the Fort at Torisaki during December of 1586.
h) Tachibana Ginchiyo. Head of clan, famed general, a Daimyo. Famous for leading a successful defensive engagement with a squad of 200 female musketeers to protect her fiefdom.

They really do make all the girls look their best in these cards

All right, I'll do a quick, dirty and crude on this round's Senshado topic:
Quote:
About the vehicles and parts used in Senshado
The vehicles usable in Japanese High School Senshado are, as regulated by the Japanese Senshado Federation (JSF), those that have completed design by August 15th 1945, with protoype construction having started, as well as vehicles that use only parts that are planned for installation during the same time period. Because new vehicles almost do not exist, those who wish to start Senshado generally either buy a second-hand vehicle for overhaul or restore one from scrap. Of course, schools and dojo who have started Senshado long ago may have vehicles that were bought as new and retained to the present day, and such vehicles very occasionally may make it on the market, but this does not ordinarily happen. Vehicles sold as second hand are centred around those mass produced vehicles, especially the M4 Sherman series and M3 light tank, as well as the Soviet T-34 series; and even if other vehicles enter the market, they are often already reserved or will sell out quickly. Certainly, some vehicles such as the British Covenanter cruiser tank are relatively available but are rarely bought by anyone other than a segment of the mania crowd. Further, this second hand market is part of an international one, and rare but popular types like the Tiger can attract the attention of buyers worldwide just on the rumor of their availability. Among those buyers, some are rumored to be so good they can obtain any tank requested. Similarly, repair businesses that can restore completely scrapped tanks to just-like-new condition exist and form a large market centered in Europe.

For the repair and restoration of these vehicles, as well as for parts needing regular replacement in competitive use, OEM parts from the original manufacturer and equivalents from other companies are produced and sold at shops approved by the Japanese Senshado Federation. While it is basically necessary to use such officially recognized parts, it is also permissible to use certain self-manufactured parts that do not affect performance. However, vehicular inspection will be performed upon registration and original parts with too high a performance may be rejected by it and thus it is necessary to use parts with as similar performance to WWII items as possible. As an exception, it is enouraged to replace parts such as electrical systems, since the manufacturing standards in those days were low and do not meet current standards, thus they are considered incapable of guaranteeing the crew's safety. In particular, old-type paper-wrapped electrical cable has high risk of leakage and fires and must be replaed. For the standards of such parts, lists are sold at JSF recognized shops and it is recommended to study them before retoration. For second hand vehicles that have passed the inspection, in addition to fulfilling the abovementioned safety standards, the Federation will install the carbon armor and evaluating mechanisms, and thereafter the vehicle may be used with only simple maintenance.

Further, from the viewpoint of safety, open-topped vehicles may not be used in Senshado. As an exceptional measure for schools that hold such vehicles, modification kits are produced and sold by manufacturers. Famous are mod kits that turn 38(t) based vehicles like Marder and Grilled into Hetzers, and perhaps since many schools hold such vehicles, the kits are bestsellers. Similarly, kits are available to transform Wespe into Panzer IIs and Nashorns, Hummels & Mobelwagens into Stumgeschutze, however since the Panzer II kit greatly weakens the tank, it does not sell well. Among the modifications are those that can turn tank recovery vehicles into combat capable state. All kinds of modifications are conducted and both procedures and parts are relatively available.

Further, practice Senshado rounds are available at JSF-recognized shops like "Sensha-club" or at JSF branch offices. Competition "warshots" are to be applied for in advance by quantity and type, reviewed by the Competition's Review Committee and then rationed out. Similarly, it is impermissible to use fuel other than that provided by the Committee. Since there is an upper limit for the allocation of both Fuel and Ammo, it is important to pay careful attention when selecting vehicles.

Leftover parts from repairs and modifications, as well as consumables that have fallen below the safety standard are not only disposed of, but are also sold at "Sensha-club" or auctions. Parts used by famous schools or famous players are sometimes traded at high prices. Tracks and rounds that are signed are particularly popular and are drooled at by mania.
I wonder why they don't make replica tanks (they won't even really be replicas, since the OEM manufacturer still exists). Parts, yes? Whole vehicles, no?

Interesting info there, though yes also wondering why they can't just make replica tanks with the same specs as the originals, modernization improvements for safety notwithstanding.

Good to see the mystery of open-top vehicles finally being solved, though I wonder about cases like the M36 and M10 tank destroyers with armored roof conversion kits.

The ability to restore recovery vehicles into combat tanks though may provide an alternative explanation for how Oarai got a Tiger (P): they may have simply converted a Bergepanzer Tiger (P) into the combat version.

Makes you wonder if the schools eventually ran into a Ship of Theseus situation, in that a tank has had its parts replaced so many times that it's technically a new tank.
