If Fuji loses it's perfect shape due to landslides the Japanese will be disappointed.

If that figure is from the linked article, it is an estimate of the casualties resulting from "a series of simultaneous earthquakes in the Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai regions located along the Nankai Trough, where it is feared another earthquake will soon take place."

I was wondering more about the effects of an eruption without the additional earthquakes.

Guys, if you think your ex is an absolute bitch...

http://news.yahoo.com/police-angry-e...opstories.html

Hope the Feds come down on her like Mount Fuji's (or Rainier's) slopes. That is, if the guy (and all those scared passengers) don't get her first.

My friend, who spent his secondary and highschool days with me outside of HK, was saying that it was a bad idea, and claims that if they have enough protests, it is going to end up like TNM. He didn't dare to turn up for the protests just in case his recently-recovered relatives in the mainland get added to the missing persons list in the future.

Then again, he said that with all that "self-governance" given to them by Beijing, Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong could turn themselves into the next Malaysian Federation, giving themselves a distance from the rulers they don't like, but at the same time maintaining a good political relationship like what most ex-colonial countries in SEA have with the British.

Well, in 35 years China gets to write HK's laws as they please, right? I guess it's natural for them to already consider the place theirs.

And it must feel stupid to have a city-state inside your borders compared to which your country is fairly...barbaric, only because the place has enjoyed a western/autonomic rule. Or maybe HK just somehow attracts the ultra rich folk for no particular reason, I dunno.

2 things:

1. 35 years is a long time, a lot can change. The Soviet Union collapsed only 45 years after the end of WW2, the zenith of it's power.

2. China likely wishes to be careful in it's dealings with Hong Kong. Hong Kong has no natural resources of it's own, as a piece of territory, it's worthless for anything besides fishing. It's main worth is it's human capital. If China was to take too heavy handed an approach with HK, you'd see a mass exodus of that human capital abroad. Hong Kong is one of the cultural and financial centers of South East Asia, all that talent and capital could easily simply flee to Singapore or Taiwan. That or it would be destroyed.

By taking a heavy hand with Hong Kong China risks destroying whatever value it has.

Similar arguments apply to Singapore.

Singapore is merely a strategic interest; the government has no backbone whatsoever should China try a heavy approach there. The stakes it has on their economy is sufficient enough to pressure the government to funnel NATO technology and various interests to China.

As I keep saying...letting china get such a major share of this island's economy is a stupidly big mistake...

Especially when you consider that traditional trade partners are not exactly turning away from this region compared to the 1990s

China doesn't have a major share of our economy, US still does. However China has a major stake in our state-owned companies and government contracts, either by being their direct suppliers or having some sort of labour exchange deal.

The disturbing thing is that these SOCs are the direct contractors to government organisations, including military. And we are using mostly US weapon systems......

Fantastic way to start World War 3 at our doorstep eh?

How nicely it turns out then that the US is now spurred to counter chinese actions in this region

War here is still unlikely but economic scene heating up is very likely....feels like someone planned this to milk as much cash as possible from both sides no?

There is more cash to be milked from the black market if it heats up. The white market is going to suffer and economic diversity will be endangered if private investors see this place as a potential flashpoint for diplomatic conflict.

There may still be economic incentives, but we pay a heavy price for political pressure from both sides. I certainly hope it is worth it, if China or US doesn't become our puppetmasters, the Malaysian, Pinoys and Indonesians are going to gangrape us for playing profits at the expense of geopolitical stability.

India’s drug industry has a unique history. For more than 30 years, the country did not recognise pharmaceutical patents. Domestic firms became masters at copying medicine and making it cheaply. After joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 1995, India had to change its patent policy. But its new system, in place since 2005, includes special protections for both patients and generic manufacturers.
For example, the law bars patents of minor changes to existing drugs, a practice known as “evergreening”. Drug reformulations are often used to extend patents elsewhere; they get no protection in India. The country also has broad criteria for “compulsory licensing”. A WTO agreement allows countries, in some instances, to force a firm to license a patented drug to a generic company. India’s rules give officials broad powers to do this.

for once, India protectionist tendency actually help its people.
