All weapons evolved from the stone weapons, which usually meant a stone hammer or ace. Daggers (or rather stone knives) were mostly tools for cutting up stuff after it was dead rather than a main weapon.

That being said, I agree with Sunder's sentiment. Even though her scythe makes me cringe, there was originality in her bardiche. You don't see many polearms in anime outside of the occasional naginata.
