And I'd feel uneasy too - Jellal and Ultear are two of the biggest liars in the Fairy Tail story. They fooled the entire council by themselves for a long while and now they're back together again.

I just reread the chapter and noticed Ultear has already lied. According to the translation I read, she said: "I was responsible for what happened to you on that Paradise Island. Gerard was controlling me though..." As far as I know, Jellal has never "controlled" her.

That's what I'm thinking has Erza so concerned. She learned from Azuma that it was Ultear pulling Jellal's strings, so she'd have reason to be suspicious. I wonder if it's just a mistranslation, though, but if it weren't, then it'd make sense.

Also, I love how eager Natsu is to get that "power up" even though he clearly doesn't know how it works. And I love how Natsu is only starting to see Ultear as a woman (I guess he couldn't shake off the feeling that she was really a man since that's what she was disguised as when they first met).

If you consider that this is a world where you may often end up fighting others and even possibly guild wars, it only makes sense for the best and smart ones not to give people the advantage by letting them see their power. Almost any realistic power or ability can be overcome and/or defeated afterall and the best way to keep your advantage is to not let people know your powers and methods.

The rationale for the guilds not sending their best is similar.

If the rankings do give them repute and therefore more/better jobs, do consider that you only need to finish in the top few and build your reputation by doing the jobs well or the difficult jobs.

I'll wait a few days to see if a 2nd version of the scanlation comes out to clarify just what Ultear said then. It might have been a mistrans - might not be.

And I like how Ultear had a 'I don't mind this at all...' look on her face when Natsu glomped her.

I still think it's lazy writing though. The older Meredy does look quite nice though

Why exactly have the other guilde's NOT been using their strongest players in this tournament in previous years? raven tail? bah, i ceased to care about them during this whole time skip debacle. Garald is back; woop-de-doo Big thing... would have to be this power up they are getting from ultear... not only is it contrived but it in part undermines what I liked about the trolling last chapter. I mean one thing Mashima has completely failed to do is SHOW us that fairy tail even NEEDS a boost. Sure Natsu had some trouble dealing with Max but with how little we know of max this really doesn't speak much for the REAL power houses... we have been TOLD that Natsu and company need this boost to compete but we have not really SEEN the the need. By all means training and power boosting should came AFTER we see the fail tail gang get a nice beat down; let them enter the tournamnet, let them loose to emphasize the power difference and THEN have them power up so they can compete with their peers. That's what i liked about the trolling; not only was it hilarious, but it would also force them to fight without the power boost and show us how far they have fallen in 7 years... seriously i am STILL trying to decipher a good rational for the 7 year time skip and allowing the characters to quickly remove the power difference caused by the time skip is NOT helping On a more positive note... Ever since Ivan showed up, I've wanted someone to punch him in that smug prick face. I wonder if he ever found out that Gajeel wasn't really on his side. As for that power-up, while they're most definitely not going to focus that much on it, just thinking of the torturous experience they'll have to go through somehow makes it a little better. As for Erza's uneasiness, I'm guessing it's because she knows that Ultear was the one pulling Jellal's strings (courtesy of Azuma). __________________ I'm not the boss. Spoiler for new chap: I would much rather have Ultear's power-up thing be a "My Time Arc will give you the power you would have gotten these past 7 years" than something like some magic second reservoir that no one ever heard about... I also agree with what was said above...why wouldn't the other guilds use their best mages from the start? I mean...it sets your ranking...why wouldn't you want to go for the gold? Again, regardless of whatever happened in the chapter...Meredy made it worth it! She's kind of what I hoped would have happened to Wendy before we found out the time-skip was some BS frozen time bubble thing.
