Who a character is related to is pretty darn critical information for a profile. You shouldn't make it too obvious for the character in your fics (unless that's part of your character's personality) but for a profile stating who your characters ancestor is (if he has one) is pretty important if you want people to write fics involving said plotpoint.

That just leaves me puzzled. Those were profiles, and I opted to hint the ancestor/descendent in name and in profile, rather than have an nyaa-ing loli that is a Holmes descendent in name only.

It wasn't going to be obvious in what I will be writing about so... why the big fuss?

This part. The descendants are just that: Descendants. Not clones. They are their own people, with their own personalities and skills. They might have some skills of their ancestor, but they are not them.

I disagree totally, particularly if the idea is reveal it at some point during a fic. There is no need, nor is it necessarily a good idea to reveal all of a characters background and past in a profile. Particularly if it might spoil some planned plot point, all that's needed really is to provide an overview of the characters basic characteristics at some point in time.

This is where we differ. After finding out that Aria was from Holmes, I was very much put off. There was no friggin' way she's anything like Holmes, not even in abilities! Not everyone shares my taste it seems...

I created Class 1-10 because of the abundance of reference licence created by the source material, so those descendents/ancestors and paranormal powers have to stay. I'll just subvert the personality. So far, I'm glad to achieve that with Jim and Alis. Xavier will need a lot of work. M is fine. I feel Nemo and Quade may ride on a line of clone a little, but are sufficient as they are for the roles they play in the fic while being their own men.

From my notes for upcoming characters of the team, they are much more unique. Again, similarity in ability only. I doubt you'll even notice who that person is related to if I didn't state it. So, stay tuned I say.

Point. Perhaps critical was a strong word. Yes, if you plan it to be some surprise reveal in your point in a fic, then having it in the profile would spoil the surprise. However if you don't plan to have it be a plotpoint in your fic (or if you don't care about the spoiler), then writing such information in the profile gives other authors more options in their works should they choose to.

Personally, I see these profiles as wiki pages. They provide background information for people to work with.

A Malaysian transfer student to Butei High, Jonathan W. Davis - or Jon, as he goes by in day-to-day life - is a hodgepodge of cultures and ethnicity.

Descended from a British soldier who emigrated to then-Malaya after the Second World War, and who later served in the Police Jungle Squad, Jon grew up hearing stories of war in the desert and the jungle and the challenges faced by soldiers in both environs. He's since decided to carry on Grandad's work, and since Malaysia's training program for Armed Detectives is just getting started (with the Armed Detective Training Centre sharing space with Pulapol, the Police Training Centre), he's off to Japan to learn at Butei High.

On account of certain problems with school in his early days (including growing up in a jungle in the middle of nowhere due to a certain career disagreement between Dad and Grandad), Jon's older than the average student, but the extra years have helped mature him... somewhat. It's accurate to describe him as a young man full of dichotomy: kindhearted and caring, yet selfish and hateful; gentle and considerate, yet rude and discourteous... the fact that he's older that most of his peers doesn't help, making him feel like an old man beyond his time. He's also somewhat genre savvy, viewing life around him like a reality show. On the other hand he sometimes acts like this is Bad Boys 2...

While his hair turning white happened independent of transferring to Butei, the current situations aren't making life easier for him. Explosions, destruction, pretty girls - if his hair isn't white by the end of the year, it'll be a miracle.

Weapons:

"This is my grandfather's rifle. Over the years we've replaced worn parts, I've added an ACOG scope... it is no longer identical to it's original form, but it is still my grandfather's rifle."

The Smelly, as it's called by the family, is a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield bolt action rifle that's been handed down the generations: when Jon was heading to Butei his grandfather gave him the rifle to carry with him. In acts of sacrilege to collectors, Jon has been carefully working to bring this rifle into usability standards that will fit the modern day, because according to him this rifle was given to him as a working weapon by his grandfather, and by god he'll use it as a working weapon. So far he's replaced the stock and added an ACOG scope, and is pondering rechambering the rifle to 7.62mm instead of .303.

At the same time, he is, however, trying to save up for an M14 EBR because he quite likes that weapon. Until then, he'll make do with grandad's rifle. Though, when all is said and done, it's really not that practical in daily life compared to his service weapon.

Apart from the Smelly, he's also trained on most other assault rifles, and will occasionally deploy to the field with an M4A1 or an L1A1 signed out from the Armory.

"Swiss quality and precision. Gotta love it."

Jon's main carry weapon is a full frame SIG Sauer P226R, chambered for 9mm, using tritium-lit sights and featuring an underside rail, which he uses to mount a Surefire taclight. He is currently saving for a laser aiming module. This weapon is usually worn on his right hip.

His backup weapon is a subcompact P229, which he usually wears in a concealed carry holster in the small of his back. On days off, where he's going out to town or running errands, the P229 is his usual weapon, instead of the P226R, which he views as his service weapon.

Yes, he watched too many cop shows set in New York, subconsciously adopting the mannerisms.

Like all Butei students, he's required to arm himself with blade and so uses an Emerson tactical folding knife, of the kind favored by the US Navy SEALs, though his is less of a weapon and more of a tool.

"I was a Boy Scout. Be prepared, they teach us."

In addition to the above, Jon normally goes to school with a rucksack in addition to his briefcase. The rucksack carries a change of clothes, extra ammunition in magazines, stripper clips and loose rounds, extra cellphone batteries, a first aid kit, cash, sweets, MREs, taser, pepper spray, rubber bullets, flashbangs, and other useful odds and ends. As a former Boy Scout, Jon attempts very much to be prepared for almost anything.

Personality & Other Traits:

Jon speaks several languages fluently: English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, Spanish and he's becoming proficient in Japanese. He's for the most part easygoing and relaxed, but flies off the handle from time to time. Being ambiguously brown he can pass for several different nationalities with only an accent, a fact which he occasionally uses to his advantage. When he speaks, he usually speaks with a British accent, though he can segue into American and Tokyo accents with ease. Is generally polite to everyone, but tends to be more blunt to people he doesn't respect or acknowledge. Also tends to flirt harmlessly with pretty girls, or try to. Likes teasing Rachel Lee and Michelle Winters alot.

For a time he had certain hangups relating to the Japanese, having had family who fought against the Japanese during World War 2. He's since made a conscious decision to appreciate the pretty Japanese schoolgirls instead of holding onto the hate.

Is a fairly decent cook, unlike most young men his age, though he prefers to make stews in a slow cooker. Has a certain appreciation for tea in the afternoon, following the Malaysian style of having tea with a snack around 4-5pm.

Is generally honest and will be willing to assist classmates if they tell him upfront what help they need. Is not keen on providing assistance without knowing the full picture.

While being a generally discreet sort, he has a certain propensity for direct action and thinking outside the box; in his own words:

"There are very few problems that cannot be solved with judicious application of explosives. There is no such thing as too much ammunition - there is too much ammunition to carry, which is why God gave us lorries. There are very few potentially dangerous situation that can't be defused by smashing through a wall. Preferably in a tank of some sort."

"I like shooting things up as much as the next man, but sometimes you've got to come to terms with the fact that violence doesn't solve anything. Now, targeted violence, on the other hand..."

"I don't quite like killing people, but let's face it - once they start shooting at you they've pretty much given up the option of surrender. One cannot let one's good heart allow one to get oneself killed by criminals."

You mean all the Baker Street clues and a shading of a gentleman with a pipe in the OP isn't enough hint of her identity ?

Beside, she did mention offhandedly that she didn't inherit the most important thing, which was Robert Downey Jr's deductive skills. Note that the characters are descendants and not parodies/reference/genderbend.

Jack was never caught, but his MO was that of an organized killer he arranged the crime scenes, removed evidence, and seems to have stalked or carefully picked victims and he was clearly educated to some degree due to how he mutilated the bodies, he may have even been an actual doctor given the methods (more or less surgical dissection). It's unlikely he could have remained unseen if he had been some crazed street person or the like, most people believe he was probably a seemingly respectable gentlemen hence he could blend in and lure women without setting of alarms. Given that it's entirely possible that like some modern killers, BTK for instance, he may have had a wife and family that knew nothing of his crimes, but helped further his facade of normalcy.

But on the other hand, I don't want to deliberately subvert a personality just for the sake of being different. I feel that some parts have on-paper chemistry, and so I keep them.

Regards the holmes, given that Aria's name is Kanzaki I'd think that Holmes had a daughter or something who married outside the family.

Kanae might be Holmes III; there's mentions of Grandmother, who was a skillful detective, which lends credence to the above thought...

The first thing you notice about Manami is the canine ears on her head and the full tail peeking out from her skirt. Her body may be small, but she’s actually the oldest in class; werewolves age much more slowly than humans, almost twice as slow. So while the proud wolfgirl is 28 years old, her body is that of a 14 year old. She also has her puppy moments, like scratching her back by rolling in the grass or taking a nap in Alis's lap. Resist the urge to cuddle her however, for one cannot tell whether her bark or bite is worse, especially when both hurt as much as hell. Just ask Jim, who suffers the brunt of her assaults for everything from his laidback way of life to his constantly getting in her way to how Alistair “misplaces” so much value upon him. This is because Manami is completely loyal to Nakamura, and considers it her 'duty' to be Alistair's "guardian hound". It is obvious that she finds Jim unworthy of Alistair’s attention. And there’s more; Manami’s tribe are werewolf-pirates that roam the Seven Seas seeking treasure and high adventure. People associate them with mafia and international crime, when in actual fact they are anti-heroes that pose as villains to throw the underworld off their scent. Nevertheless, werewolf-pirates take what they need and leave nothing for their victims. Which then explains why Manami has barged into Jim’s life lock stock and barrel, hijacking everything under the guise of keeping an eye on him. In battle, she alternates forms between fully physically-reinforced wolf, fully hydrokinetic human, and werewolf which has a balance of both. In this manner, Manami juggles the different strengths and weaknesses of each form to maximal effect.
