Too bad I'm the one-of-the-kind in my friend circle, they don't really watch anime like I do (Besides from a Gundam geek, but I'm not into it that much) and most anime-otakus I've meet on the streets or in conventions are simply too freaky for me. >.> I don't mind that much but I know I'll just look weird dressed as "Archer" on the 31st.

As other people have mentioned, it wouldn't be something I'd just bring up randomly in a conversation, especially with someone I'm not that close to. With friends, if they've dropped by my house, they'd know I love anime (computer wallpapers and figurines) and manga (too many shelves to count). If someone asked me if I had any hobbies, I'll say I like Japanese culture (including language, traditions and of course animation). If they asked me specifically whether or not I liked anime, of course I'd say yes.
Since I grew up in an Asian household, anime is pretty much accepted in the family. And around here (big city), people are accustomed to it as opposed to let's say a small southern US town. So I haven't talked to anyone who had the misconception that anime is hentai. And if they didn't know what it is, I'll explain it to them briefly. The biggest problem I've had in regards to anime is genre. I prefer love comedy, as opposed to action and generally shounen material. So it's kinda hard to find someone who has watched them and is willing to talk to you about it. Most of them watch Naruto, Bleach and stuff like that. I usually just say "I haven't watched it as I'm not that interested" and that's that. Most awkward moment is my parents telling a family friend's 12 year old daughter that I liked that anime and she ended up talking with me about D.Grayman for 1 whole hour. I had only watched the first ep, while she was totally obsessed with it. About anime clubs/conventions around here, it seems like they cater too much to mainstream (or rather those that are brought over to North America) anime instead of newer shows that aren't all shounen types. And as for manga, I always bring along a manga from my shelves when I head out somewhere where I expect to have time to do some reading. It's just a hobby of mine; I don't mind people seeing it (although I have to admit, I wouldn't bring some manga out because of the cover art); and if they're curious enough to read over my shoulder, they'd realize that it's in Japanese (or at least not in English in their eyes) ;p One qualm of mine though, which is kinda related, is how it's almost impossible to find someone to talk to regarding H-game plots. People don't understand that some people don't play solely for the HCG. And it's hard to find someone who also knows Japanese who appreciates good storylines. Sigh.

Many here are of the opinion that they have no reason to hide their passion for anime, but I think the bad reputation that comes with being an anime fan is more or less everywhere the same (even in Japan). The only difference might lay in their selfconfidence and the fact they dont care as much about wierd reaction from others that may pop up here and there.
This bad reputation however is something that I wonder about, since i would say about 20% of the people I know watch/watched anime more or less frequently. Its not a majourity but a pretty big part (which would of course not be so big if only counting rather passionate fans like myself). Dispite that we have to fight agains mentalities like "anime=pokemon=only for kids or stupid nerds" (here in germany i think the anime=porn mentality is not that big). Sometimes I talk about anime with guys i know like them as well, but only very few times and there was only one person who shared my taste in anime and he dont watch quite as much as i do. Probably all of my friends know Im into anime somehow because even without me announcing it as friends they found out sooner or later, but the rather typical reaction is the same i got from a friend just recently, who said that "I should rather get me a desktop wallpaper of some semi-naked model instead of one with anime on it". I am a freshmen in university now and even though we inroduced ourselfes and mentioned our hobbies there was no way in hell I would tell them im into anime because that would instantly put me down on the ladder unless a great majourity of out group just so happened to be animefans as well which is impossible. If I should meet someone there whos also into anime, i might as well talk to him about it, but other than that i wont mention it and thats how things work for me on this side of the world. People here who tell they dont see a reason to hide it still cant tell me watching anime is seen as much as as a hobby as playing soccer or tennis.

In fact, it was EXACTLY what I was going to say, as I very much alike with that description. Usually you don't need to boast about watching anime of having lots of japanimation merchandise. Usually your friends know about that and that's enough. What's more... I met 6 years ago a small group of people by forums who liked anime as much as I do and we go out a lot, discos, bars... We gather at least twice a month and we celebrate each and every birthday if it is someone from the group. The group has been growing since then and we are more than 12 people now, and as we say, we gather together a lot (not always all of us, but at least half of them, gathering 12 people in a weekly basis it's not so easy as it seems when it comes to going out). The point of this is that we behave pretty much like people would call "normal". You don't need to wear cosplays while you walk on the street or behave like an anime character, you just need to love anime, and watch it, that's it. I'm sure COMPREHENSIVE people wouldn't mind having a friend "who watches anime". Lots of people have hobbies, and if you manage yourself to behave like every other person would do, it's not much of a problem. People who can't understand that aren't even worthy of being called friends, because they fall victims of the prejudice and refuse to see there's more being a person who watches anime, if it was some despective quality. I have no reason to hide it. If I'm talking about hobbies I'll bring it up. I love anime and I'm proud. But at my school people are scared to say it cus this one kid was watch Hentai at lunch and ppl found out and now they have the wrong idea about anime...

Gah, I could have been really witty and said "Not at all", posting a link to my anime-plastered mythspathe, but it's private and whatnot.
But yes, I'm quite open about it. I have read Shakugan no Shana light novels during our mandatory English reading time. It's fun. Try it. But only do so if you don't think you're in a position to be ostracised over it. EDIT: Actually, my school library carries manga. Haha. Of course, there aren't actually very many other anime fans at my school, so I'm assuming the manga never really gets checked out. |

Of coarse I do. I don't find any shame in liking anime. A lot of people in my school like anime, though, so it's not a rare thing. Though, a lot of them are the types that really only watch Bleach or Naruto and are huge into that. Pretty much everybody also knows that I don't like Naruto. But yeah, I'm pretty open about it. I'm not announcing it or talking about it in a huge way, but I do have an anime picture on my binder and a lot of people just know it anyway.

I don't go shouting it from the roof tops, but if it comes up in conversation I don't deny it. The majority of the people I hang out with are anime fans anyway. It's really not that big a thing around here though aside from whats on TV like Bleach and Naruto, and some people for some odd reason take offense to people that like anime/manga around here and treat us like a sub-species. I'll never forget the one time a clerk at Waldenbooks refused to help me find a manga title becuse, as she stated it, "I hate that Japanese crap." The clerks at Best Buy are the same way, every time I buy a anime DVD there or am with someone that is getting one, they almost always roll their eyes and glare.

My biggest entertainment interests are pro hockey (I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan) and anime. Of these two, one is the national pastime and widely talked about (hockey), and the other has a much smaller group of fans locally (anime).
Given that fact, I tend to talk about hockey most with casual friends and relatives, and don't really feel a need to offer up the fact that I'm a big anime fan (the times I've hinted at it to anybody but other anime fans, I'd get suspicious looks - it's just not worth the hassle, in my opinion; especially since I can gladly talk about hockey in real life). |
