Japanese subs/captions

Have any of the groups released or plan to release the captions that are broadcast along with the anime? At the beginning of most anime series it usually says 字幕放送.
Some of the drama fansubbing groups are releasing the Japanese captions so it looks like it is possible.
This would be very helpful for people learning Japanese since it's often easy to miss what it is being said but reading the subtitles gives confirmation of what is being said.

The problem is that you first need to get your hands on a raw or transport stream which has those captions included. It's not so much on the group, as on the raw -- or at least that is where I picture the biggest problem myself. I've yet to see one like this myself...

Since rather recently, Eclipse gets transport streams with closed captions, at least for some shows. I'm pretty sure Menclave does as well, and probably more groups that I don't know about.

I personally don't really see a problem with hosting these somewhere but they come in a rather annoying HTML format without any timecodes, and I wouldn't want to be the one to time them.

Yes Menclave has been doing that for Gundam 00 by getting the TS (Transport Stream) with a separate file for CC, so that the translator can translate directly from the captioned Japanese text. I think they also uses the CC rips (OCR'd). I'm not sure where they get them, but yeah, there seems to be people releasing the CC in textual forms.

I know some people get them from traders on opennap Japanese networks with programs like Utatane, but you'll need to have some bargaining chips to make successful trades, I think.

They're actually excellent. I think you might be confusing them with real-time closed captioning which inherently cannot be perfect.

Hey now guys according to Tsuki-Kage, using closed captions is cheating. You should all feel ashamed of yourselves. Q_Q! </wrist>

Closed captions are a gateway cheat. Next you'll be getting names and episode titles from magazine scans, browsing 2ch for OP/ED lyrics...

Slippery slope.

I heard (not that I would ever do such dishonorable things myself!) that the cheaters in question have their own raw capping box in Japan.

It's the degradation of fansubbing I say! O... wait, wrong direction.

The new raw provider is the the transport stream provider, share has a few but the most reliable way is to find your own capper.

Share can be unpredictable as we were able to find ~40% of Ookami's ts's on share in a timely fashion.

what's a raw capping box?
what's Utatane?

acquiring closed captions for anime Raws is more complex than I thought it would be

Sarcasm aside...

Not that I've ever done this, or even know how to do it, but what's wrong with looking at the closed captioning for clarification on certain lines? I know there have been plenty of times where it would have been helpful e.g. English loan words that have their pronunciations butchered, etc.

I agree. Having the closed captions allows for more accurate translation, and we can make sure that we're not leaving anything out when we're translating. I don't see why this is "cheating": I'd prefer having translation accuracy improved than have anime blogs calling people "liars".

I agree with tun/Fighter747 as well. It could only help the translation process. Especially if its a more complicated line, or one that is very hard to hear.

Listening to the speech is just as much cheating as reading captions.
Real fansubbers just watch the video and make up something that fits.

I'm still working on it, but apparently it is impossible to formulate a post so incredibly stupid that everyone will immediately realize that the author has to be either joking or sarcastic.

Take one normal Windows computer with a rather big harddrive, enable remote control either by VNC or by remote desktop, hook it up to one of these and connect it to the internet with a fast link and install the proper software and you have your raw capping box.

With CC scripts, I can see new translators that are not so well-versed in listening comprehension helping more projects to take off. If only these things were more accessible...
