In most Commonwealth nations, Inspectors tend to be mid-grade level officers, typically the equivalents of 1st Lts in rank; generally they're the lower end of the ranking system (for officers, anyway).

That said the FBI analogy of Inspectors probably fits best, even better than my idea of the US Army Criminal Investigation Department Special Investigators, who are essentially roving dectives; FBI Inspectors have, as TK said, more authority and tend to be very mobile and outside the main force structure.

Hey guys... Run through this for me and help me solve an issue here.

Essentially right after the 'backfire' that goes on here, I have a passage the more or less focuses on Crash's primary attribute. I don't want to feel like I'm reiterating something that's already too well known by the time you reach it in the story. But at the same time I want the passage to click in everyone's head. "Oh yeah..." And not just the readers. So did I write it interestingly enough?

Marilyn smiled as she handed the base commander a place consisting of a high protien meal. Roland wasn't sure what exactly it was, but he was sure it was Mid-childa's local version of chicken. Cooper was up next, having only enough patience to let what was essentially his 'boss' get food first. Marilyn glared at him a few seconds as she triple loaded his plate with the heaviest food on the line.

"You really should cut back sweety," she tried. It was the same speach every day.

"You don't cultivate THIS kind of pressence by cutting back," he smirked, patting his bulging belly.

"What you're cultivating is cholesterol, sugar," Marilyn responded evenly. "If you don't start cutting it back, I'll start cutting you back. Here in the middle of nowhere, I control the flow of food."

"You can try," Cooper grinned. "But I have ways of getting around your food blockades."

Marilyn shook her head as Cooper wandered away to sit down and watch the replay. Then she turned to the pint sized one who was staring through the seperation glass, slavering away. Reinforce Zwei had zipped sharply in front of Crash at the last second when she realized just how diverse the selection was.

"See anything you like sweety?" she asked.

"Heh, probably everything on display," Crash laughed, looming up behind the Unison. "You're not HUNGRY are you?"

Rein turned quickly and smiled in the cutest fashon possible, her eyes twinkling like tiny stars. Crash stood up and laughed.

"Careful now," he stated. "Watch that appetite or you'll end up looking like Cooper."

"NOT POSSIBLE!" Cooper piped up across the room. "It takes dedicated practice to achieve this level of perfection."

"Yeah, perfection... Whatever." It was Key, barely audible under his shirt. Crash rolled his eyes and turned back to Rein, reaching down to poke her in the belly.

"Just watch out, or your stomach could swell up and go B-"

-BOOM!!!-


Nanoha and Fate, who were bringing up the Rear, jumped backwards as the spot immediately surrounding Crash erupted in sparks and smoke. Everyone else in the Room, turned around in their spots to see what had happened.

Crash stumbled back a step, his hair standing straight up. Rein was in similar shape, about ten feet away, caught by a condiment packet tower at the end of the food line and cushioned by packets of various sauces Roland hadn't quite figured out whether to call Ketchup, or cocktail sauce.
After a few seconds of total silence, the shattered light socket above Crash sparked, and the florescent bulb dropped to the ground and shattered. Those inspecting the spectacle turned back to their food as if it was nothing out of the ordinary.

"What just happened?!" Hayate asked in a near panic as she rushed over to check on Rein.

"I think..." Crash began, coughing a little. "I think that was a failed Unison-In attempt."

Nanoha visibly screwed her face up as she twisted her head to the side.
"Eh?"

Hayate reached down and pulled Rein from the Cushon of packet sauces, cradling her like a newborn kitten.
"Are you okay?"

"No mama, that meatball was plenty spicy, can I have another?"

Hayate sighed. Even blasted silly, all this little one could think about at times was food.

"What makes you think that was a Unision failure?" Fate asked.

"It was definately a rejection," Signum stated. Up until now, she'd been completely silent ever since they'd left TICTOCC. Shamal was there right beside her. "There's no mistaking that feeling of incompatable forces conflicting with each other like that."

Nanoha looked from Signum to Crash, her face still a mask of confusion.

"But he didn't DO anything," Fate stated the obvious.

"Yes he did," Signum stated stoicly. "He touched her."

Fate ressisted the urge to match Nanoha's blank look. Signum, never the less, saw it and crossed her arms, leaning her head down as she often did when she was revealing what should have been simple common fact.

"Are you forgetting she's still a DEVICE?"

Ding! Signum litterally could count the two seconds it took for Nanoha and Fate to mutually achieve the same revelation, just from the looks on their faces. As one, the two aces turned and looked directly at Crash, who was busy patting his clothes down, trying to shake any glass bits and florescent powder off of himself.

"Maybe you two missed it all this time," Signum continued. "But he's been very careful about what he touches. You can read it if you watch his body language and posture. He doesn't touch anything, period. He doesn't brush walls, he doesn't randomly kick things like small rocks, not a random tap or motion out of place."

Of course, SIGNUM would notice something like that. Crash put up the manner of a laid back fighter jock, but the Knight had spent more time watching and learning than the rest of the group. It was habbit. She'd picked up on it early on, his seemingly random warnings, even the offhand comment from SkyEye when they'd arrived. The comm tower incident and now this only served to reinforce her conclusion.

"I have a cronic case of never ending Murphy's Law," Crash stated into her internal monologue. "Nearly everything I touch finds a way to break. Why do you think I'm good at my job? What can go wrong, has a bad habbit of doing so around me. And it's almost ALWAYS related to anything I touch... like a Unison device."

Crash tried again to flatten his hair a little, failing to do so. After a short moment he turned and held his index finger out to the metal rail of the food line.

"What would you say?" he asked. "Twelve Volts?" And touched his finger to the metal.

'POP!'

"You just ask yourself, 'What could POSSIBLY go wrong'," he continued. "And then when you have your answer, apply that as the most likely thing to happen the moment I touch it."

"It must be terrible living like that." Nanoha had gone right into Pity Mode from Confused Mode.

"Naaaaaah," Crash waved her pity away. "If anything, quiet girl over here-"

Signum silently objected to the nickname...

"-called it a minute ago. I simply don't touch anything. Plus, all these years, I've kinda' learned to spot what I could break before I break it."

He sighed as Hayate walked over to them, Rein in her arms.

"Of course, it's real easy to forget a Unison is TECHNICALLY equipment... My bad."

~Uuuuuh T_T still no time to write or break backlog.

Anyway, like I said before, I plan to modify things around Rogue Squadron a bit. now, I may have been a bit dramatic back there with the whole rebuilt thing, but really the Squadron won't change that much. Keroko was an instructor first and foremost, and now we know that SAFA units are formed out of elite air mages. Since they're a unit that develops new combat techniques and tests equipment, making Rogue Squadron a SAFA unit seems natural. It evens the instabillity I had with Keroko previously (I made her juggle Squadron duty and training duty, which I will no longer have to) but as a price I will have to somewhat lower their heroics, since they're not a combat squadron they won't see as much front line action (they will see action, though. Nanoha went into action too despite being an instructor, and those techniques tactics, and equipment do need field testing) but all things together, they will remain the same. Just less.... war hero-ish.

The brunette relented and sighed. "Alright then." Turning her mind onto other things immediately, Hayate pulled Grandis by the arm.

"I'll have you compensate me then." Playfully leading the young man towards the balcony of her office, the doors were previously closed to avoid any distractions.

The two was silent as they stood within the balcony area, basking within the brilliance of the night sky. Hayate broke the silence first.

"The sky's beautiful tonight. Neh, Grandis?"The shorter girl asked, resting her head into the broad shoulders of the young man beside her.

"Yes, yes it is. Do you know why?"

Hayate's face was one of curiosity as she leveled her blue eyes into Grandis' own.

Grandis gave a exasperated sigh."You're really hopeless Hayate." Bringing up his free arm to stall her outburst he gave his answer. "It's your birthday tonight."

Hayate was silent for a few awkward heartbeats. "I..forgot."She admitted meekly.

"Baka."Grandis reprimanded as he ruffled Hayate's hair.

"Gomen." Hayate apologized, sticking out her tongue lightly and putting on her best raccoon eyes.

The lovers returned to their peaceful observation of tonight's starry sky before Hayate broke the silence again.

"Grandis.Remember the first time we met?"

"Year of '77. On Duraxyll."Grandis said.

"I was on a special mission with Oji-chan. I met you there, along with Lyriel-chan and Luozorl-san."She recounted.

"Yeah. I sure made a impression on you didn't I?"Grandis said with a wolfish grin.

"You kidnapped me! And made Oji-chan, Signum and all the rest worried to no end as well."

"That sure was a long time ago wasn't it?" Grandis said ruefully, recalling events that had transpired long ago.

"It was. We've come a long way since then didn't we?" Hayate closed her eyes and snuggled herself deeper into Grandis, tightening her grip on his arm.

"Yes we have. And you achieved a great many things since then, and your work has helped many many more people. So don't go doubting yourself again."

"You played a great part as well. You were there by my side when I did those things Grandis."Hayate paused slightly before continuing. "How did you know?"

"I know you too well by now Hayate. And I picked up a few tricks along the way." Withdrawing the fact he learned those from Aurion Dauer, Grandis' former arch-nemesis. "So tell me what's on your mind now," soothing her by placing his hand on top of hers.

"I just can't help but wonder if I have spent my life properly, if I had done right and done good. If I was worthy of the people who gave me their strength and their sacrifices."


Reinforce, who gave her life so Hayate could continue hers.

Rein, tireless assistant who spent many an hour at her side.

Gil Graham, who watched over her to his dying day.

The Wolkenritter, who dedicated each of their lives towards hers.

Nanoha, Fate, Yuuno, Chrono and the rest, who also ceaselessly gave her their support to all this years.


"And inevitably, I wonder about the people who I scarred, despite not knowing their names. The people I hurt when I helped others." Hayate finished as she faced Grandis, her eyes glistening like the stars now high in the sky.

Grandis gently wiped the tears from the corners of Hayate's saddened eyes before turning around to face her squarely. He placed both hands on her small shoulders.

"Yagami Hayate." Grandis said. "I need not remind you that all the things you did were done in the best interest of the people you were helping, to the best of your knowledge. It would have been easier for you to just watch and leave the work to others. But you didn't. You stood out and rallied other people to your cause, doing what you believed that need to be done."

"People followed you, not because it was orders from a superior or your rank. They did so because they believed in you. That you, among the others out there, was worthy of their single dedication and loyal belief. Otherwise, nothing else could have convinced them. "

"I'm being selfish when I say this but I will say it regardless."Grandis hardened himself for his following words. "Hayate, you cannot accomplish anything without sacrifices, be it big or small. Sometimes the cost is small, perhaps your own time and effort. Other times it will require a greater cost. Injuries. Scars. Even the lives of others."

"But that is the cost. The greater your hopes, the higher it will be. That the price be paid in exchange for a small piece of goodness to be done in this world. As long as you do it with the best of interests in mind, then I can safely say it will be a cost well paid."

"There is nothing you can do about that, and you have to learn to carry that burden with you. The weight of your decisions and consequences will forever be with you. As well as the faith and worry of those who believe in you.That is the cost you will carry, as long as you walk this path, Hayate." Finishing off, Grandis place his hand against Hayate's cheek.

"Thank you, Grandis." Hayate thanked, even as she broke out in light sobs.

Wiping away her tears Grandis thought up a method to placate her. "Now no more crying. Every tear you shed means a star in the sky disappears." He teased lightly with a smile.

"That's horrible Grandis! You meanie, take that back!" Hayate protested even as her voice cracked .

"Well at least that stopped you from being a crybaby." Grandis laughed as he drew Hayate into his arms, crossing them together while she rested against his taller frame. Grandis' chin sat on top of Hayate's head, as the two became comfortably aware of their bodies being in close contact.

"Hayate." Grandis said simply as he turned her around to face him. A hand brushed a stray lock of hair of her cheek while another tilted her chin slightly towards Grandis' face.

"Let us go. Together."

"Um." His breath left a cool touch over where her tears had dried, soothing her. Hayate slowly closed her eyes as she waited to accept his lips.

Grandis inched ever closer to the waiting girl, as he gradually closed his eyes too.


The sudden knocking sound of the office doors rang long in their silent surroundings.


Groaning mentally, the two reluctantly separated before Hayate answered the door.

She would find the distraction well-worth it as a small girl with short light-brown stood framed within the doorway. In her hands she hugged a stuffed bunny while the yellow and red hairclips on her left side could be clearly seen.

Rubbing her sleepy eyes with one hand she made her request.


"Mommy. I'm thirsty."

"Um. How about a glass of milk?" Hayate smiled as she looked over her daughter.

"Daddy will get that for you. Alright Lily?" Grandis knelt down to one knee to pat her head.

"It's fine. You said I need the rest anyway." Hayate knelt down as she carried Lily into her arms.

"And who was the one who said she had reports to do? Leave it to me Hayate. Surely I can handle something like getting our daughter her glass of milk."

Before the couple could start a standing debate over who should get the glass of milk for their daughter, little Lily solved the case.

"Both Mommy and Daddy can come together." The child smiled sleepily.

A quick exchange of eyes, followed by rueful shakes of their heads.

"Let us go Grandis."

"Together."

Wordier than I expected but I felt like it so what the heck.

That's indeed how it was used. The author was trying to roughly define the level of authority that an "Executive Officer" (must use Midchildran, must use Mid) has w/i the structure.

If their primary purpose is to check their own people out, that sounds a lot more like Acous. Fate's primary job is criminal investigation.

Same here... And as I purge Kha of Khrack, the IRC keeps finding more to his comrades. And with Anita getting influenced (She even sang "My Boyfriend is an Otaku"!!! ), that means while Kha is getting better, Artei and Sophia are rolling lower and lower for Sanity saves.

Looks like Rogue will be in for a major overhaul... And possible screw up the Cente Gravia plans.

Wait no, I'd just drag them in like how the Aces got dragged into a war they had no part of.

For OC, there is effectively the Conservation of (In)Sanity going on.

The Total Amount of Sanity (or Lack thereof) stays the same at all times. Only the amount pressent at any given location/person will change.

See, we got this weird thing here - half the time, the crack contributes to us fighting, and the other half of the time it brings peace and makes us wonder why we didn't break it out sooner.

We should hope not... after all if it is fixed then that means the more people there are the less sane everyone will inevitability be.

Most of these teams are a few dozens men hovering around probably about 20 on average culled from FBI at large on a volunteer basis and given additional training.

Much better. In truth I had been a little concerned about making them into SEALS after some of the discussions that had taken place back in the other thread. This will suit me just fine.

I thought it was good. It didn't occur to me until after it had happened. As you pointed out, they are still devices, even if they're not standard ones.

Since they're a unit that develops new combat techniques and tests equipment, making Rogue Squadron a SAFA unit seems natural. It evens the instabillity I had with Keroko previously (I made her juggle Squadron duty and training duty, which I will no longer have to) but as a price I will have to somewhat lower their heroics, since they're not a combat squadron they won't see as much front line action (they will see action, though. Nanoha went into action too despite being an instructor, and those techniques tactics, and equipment do need field testing) but all things together, they will remain the same. Just less.... war hero-ish.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Looks like alot of us are ret-conning things around here. I don't see any problems with it. No problems with them finding some action as well since they'd be called upon for backup due to their mage ranking (among other things).

Come to think of it... It is somewhat correlated, we don't have a lot of perfectly sane people, but a lot more of less-than-sane progressing to insane...

And the more this thread grew the Khrackier it got... There's actually less people active now compared to the past, possibly why it seems to have more sane posts for now, save the random bursts.
