What type of upgrade ?? If you don't change the motherboard you shouldn't have "problem" with an OEM version for example.
If your on a budget the OEM version is a better choice, the call to Microsoft to reactive won't cost you 80$ (it's free in France). |

There's nothing too bad there. I'd save $$ on the motherboard by going I really don't understand why you keep going NVIDIA though. At any pricepoint ATI has better cards right now. Pick a 5750, 4870 or 5770. They're all faster and better than the gts 250 at the same price.
Don't bother with a 790g board unless you really really desperately want to use 2 videocards. And you don't. Personally I've stopped using Asus because of their poor bios updates. I've moved to Gigabyte now and the bios is much more user friendly. Here is the PSU i'd recommend. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703011 You'll probably have to reformat and install W7. Your W7 install is setup for the hardware you have now. The hardware will be extremely different so there probably will be issues unles you reinstall.

And right now off the top off my head I can probably name a handful of apps that are fully uttilising it. And who even knows if Cuda will be widespread for gaming - OpenCL is just as likely to be succesful for the desktop. And being open source it probably has a better chance of getting more support. On a limited budget I really really avoid building a system around any vaporware or hardware to be released. You end up building a half assed pc that's not paricularly good now and won't be particularly any better in the future.
to op you sure really don't want to spend $5.00 more for a 500gb hdd? Save yourself $20.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131397 You're not going to use the features such as integrated graphics because you will have a video card. You won't be crossfiring so it's waste as well. And again save $5.00 here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227346 Are you a student BTW? If you are check if your school is part of the MSDNAA program. You can get W7 for $30. If you're not you probably know someone who is http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/academic/default.aspx http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...r-students.ars If you want to use 4gb make sure you get the 64bit version. If you just want to use 32 bit, 2gb of RAM is enough so adjust accordingly.

Mini rant on newegg reviews (similar to my thoughts on Youtube comments)
Spoiler:
There's a combo deal with the card and w7 which saves you $20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...656.14-131-140 EDIT: OOPS IGNORE You were after home Premium *sigh* I hate the new naming scheme Look around if there are combo packages for oyur other stuff. I'm too sleepy to look for the combo packages but otherwise that's fine. I've actually just d/l Aion and will be giving it a run tomorrow. I still say spend the $8.00 and get a 500gb hdd actually if you're not in a rush these are out shortly (like the next week or so) and should be a better cpu at the same price http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/athlon...iew-31709.html 10% better for $10 is huge value

One of the reviews does have a point about the DDR2-1066 memory by corsair, although he's a little mistaken. Corsair and Kingston set the default speed to DDR2-800 since it is the highest approved standard speed for DDR2 (by JEDEC). It's not publicized but you can find it in their spec. You have to manually set the voltage, the speed and the timings higher to get them to run at 1066. The ram will have the timings and voltage printed on its label. It's quite a lot of fiddling to do and can result in an unstable system if you do something wrong. I would highly recommend going with standard speeds: DDR2-800 for DDR2 and DDR3-1333 for DDR3 just to simplify things so you can simply set everything in the BIOS to "default" and not have to worry about anything. As such I'd recommend: AM3 motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131398 - $99 DDR3 memory (2 x 2GB): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148262 - $69 and consider this cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103724 it's Athlon II X3 2.9Ghz for $89. You're getting an entire cpu core for only $23 more over the X2-245 you cited. It should benefit with the latest CCCP (use MT option) and more so with CoreAVC. The motherboard above comes with a decent low end GPU (HD 4200) with dvi and hdmi so you might be able to hold off the video card purchase until later if you don't need a high end one right now. Note that black Friday is only a month away... |
