Did the first series sell well at all 0_0 ? I love the series myself, but I imagine it was a hard thing to sell to folks.
....unless the streaming version gets so many views that the ad revenue makes it worth it. HMMMM. |

Oh God ... if Funi is releasing Kai (and I really hope they are! I want it on DVD!), PLEASE make them recast the dub! Even though I don't generally listen to it, it's just an embarrassment. I had only listened to the first couple of episodes dubbed before, and that was about two years ago, but I just went and watched Episode 25 streaming on Funi's website, and I was actually taken aback by how horrible the dub was. Rena, Mion, Keiichi ... awful. Satoko and Oiishi weren't too bad. The worst of all was Rika (probably because she is my favorite character). When I heard her "dark Rika" voice for the first time I was actually aghast. SO BAD!
Besides that, no one can pronounce any of the Japanese names and words correctly (what is up with "Hiiiiiiinamizawa" and "Sadoko"?). And the translation is just awful and awkward -- even in parts where they wouldn't have needed to fuss with the words to match the mouth movements, like the last scene during Rika's voice over. Awful, awful, awful. It's painful to see one of my favorite series like this. But I still want Kai released XD So I hope it's on Funi's list (and Zetsubou Sensei too. I took a survey for Funi awhile ago and SZS was on a list of possible acquisitions). |

There is a huge call for Higurashi Kai amoungst the Funimation Forum regulars but that probably doesnt mean much... In the first online "convention" they did I asked about the boxset sales and their Net rep did say that the re-released box set was selling extremely well.
Whether or not this means we finally get Kai or for that matter Rei or Umineko is pretty much up in the air... They would have to do a new dub for Kai. Funimation as a company is known for there dubs and Ni was done by a now defunct Geneon cast and crew.. Thank God for small favors right..

I liked the dub too.... Also, while I thought Rena's voice was rather poor in the begining arcs (it just sounded like she tried to hard to be cute sometimes,) I just loved how she performed in the last arc.
Spoiler for last episode quote:
Just the way she said it. I found it nifty. Liked Rika's voice (both sides) a lot too... And Mion/Shion is my favorite peformer in the bunch. .....But uh, yeah, as Baru said "lolopinions". I like Funi's voice pool too though, so if they do get the series and do a re-dub I won't really mind or anything. (as a side note, the streaming Higurashi dub is fun to listen to whilst doing boring tasks at work. Makes it feel like a an audio drama. heh, heh~. ) |

Yeah, I was REALLY hoping that they'd license Kai.
Their Roll Out Riot was truly a riot, because they only licensed one or two titles that anybody cared about, and one of them was a rescue, and IMO it wasn't even the title that needed to be rescued at this point. Still it's clear that they have interest in doing so, I was just hoping they'd do it now right after I had watched the first season through their streaming. I'm aware that Kai answers a lot of questions and it would probably be best viewed right after the watching the first season. ...But I guess live-action movies and obscure mediocre anime titles were more what FUNimation was looking for.

I got my box set near Christmas and New Years, and I can honestly say that the dub isn't unwatchable, but there is room for improvement (*cough* RIKA *cough* >3<). I was very pleased that Mion and Shion (my favorites) had a surprisingly-good dub voice (in my opinion). ^O^
If Kai isn't licensed by at least 2011, I don't really think we're getting Kai, Rei, Umineko, or any of the live-action movies. ... Negative thinking ftw... |
