Anyways, I feel like the changes they made to episodes 1-3 now completely backfired. If Izumi brought Mirai here to kill Akihito in the first place, the whole not being able to kill Youmu because of her past trauma no longer makes sense. They should have just stuck to the original LN characterization, as it fits way better for the storyline they've developed than the anime original Mirari they used for the first arc and sort of conveniently dropped for this current arc.

Not unless she wants to pass the responsibility to Mirai. Aki's mother is a well known warrior. I take it Izumi doesn't want to cause some kind of unnecessary trouble if she takes Aki down herself.

Well there are still some missing stuff. So we still can't say what the Nase clan is up to.

Based on my knowledge of story structure, drama, tropes, and other similar such things, I will predict with a fair amount of confidence that any death he may appear to suffer at Mirai's hands at this point will not be the last we see of him. As far as I'm concerned his survival isn't really in question at this point. Oh, it's possible that he'll die, but if so they'll find a way to bring him back. The "OMG, is the main character going to die?!!!!1!!1" cliffhanger doesn't really work when you can tell by how the story's built that they're not really going to do it, or at least not at that point.

First person perspective from Aki's PoV. He's the main character. They actually increased the screen time of Mirai in the anime.

It's sad. If Kyoukai no Kanata had done a better job of engaging viewers earlier on, and had done a better job with its major characters, then Episode 9 would have been truly excellent. In a vacuum, it seems like a key episode in a legitimately very good Shakugan no Shana-esque show. But it's let-down by what came before, causing its emotional notes to not ring as true and clear as they otherwise would.

As is, my feelings are similar to Kanon's.

I also would consider it a nice twist if Akihito did die. If nothing else, that would show actual balls and creative courage, which aren't exactly the first thing "KyoAni" makes me think of these days.

You mean the antagonist who stole Sakura's staff, I presume? Well, at least he seems to be aware of his douchebaggery, and is reveling in it like a good villain should.

By contrast, Izumi seems much more cold and matter-of-fact about this. She seems to think she's in the right here, whereas the antagonist is just acting selfishly, and he knows it. At some level, I respect a sincere straightforward villain over a manipulative trouble-maker who hurts others while acting high-and-mighty.

He gave it to her in the first place, so it's hard to call it stealing when he took it back.
