Okay, now I'm wondering on something else...

Scars... If you have a scar while you're a little kid, will it "grow" as you get older?

Yes, they do. I have a scar on my knee since I was 7 and it's only grown.

That's a good thing to know about scars. Perhaps this'll tell you why...

Eric: Ratchet, those scars you have...

Brian: ...

Eric: They're not combat scars, aren't they?

Brian: They are, it's just that I got them from my early combat assignments before I got transfered to Alpha.

Eric: And did you stay back and provide support back then?

Brian: ...

Eric: The soldiers on the battlefield who get the least amount of injuries are those who stay back and provide support.

Brian: ...

Eric: And there's no way you got those from your first assignments, especially while staying back providing support.

Brian: [Flashbacks from his childhood began to flare in his mind]

Girl 1: Oh, come on. We're just getting started~

Brian: [Body begins to quiver a bit]

Girl 2: Take this! [Whip cracks] And this! [Whip cracks]

Brian: Grr... [Squats down and gips his body, still quivering]

Girl 3: Yeah, that's it! Ride him, sis!

Girl 2: Grab the reigns and ride him like there's no tomorrow!

Brian: [Mutters] No...

Eric: Ratchet? [Approaches Ratchet]

Brain: No...

Eric: Ratchet? [Attempts to place hand on Ratchet's right shoulder]

Brian: NO! [Pushes Hot Shot away]

Eric: [!] ...

Brian: ...

[A few minutes of silence later]

Brian: [Shakes his head] Uh...

Eric: Ratchet?...

Brian: [Sighs and gets up] Sorry, Hot Shot... I don't want to talk about it. It's too personal... [Exits the sleeping quarters]

Spoiler for astra exodus part 3:

A prompt flew up in Rong's face. Proximity sensors warning that he was locked on. He noted with vexation that the lone enemy unit was already here as he let himself drop onto the ocean's surface in order to avoid the oncoming beam.

"Croixas", Rong spoke into his communicator.

"So you noticed it too?"

Re-engaging evasive maneuvers, the young pilot began to weave through a rain of heavy fire from his two opponents. All the while he tried to process something that was disturbing him from the first unit he downed.

"I'm not stupid. They may just be drones but they're still IS. Where the hell was that thing's AD?", Rong ground out. The sounds of typing over the comm link not calming his nerves one bit.

Croixas was silent for a few minutes, ignoring the fact that Rong was still waiting on his answer while playing keep away from four 20mm caliber beam cannons.

"Well?", came the impatient demand.

The elder man audibly scratched his scalp in an effort to keep calm of things. "Shut up for like two seconds will ya? I'm running diagnostics right now.".

"You're hacking into that thing?"

"Clearly.", was the snippy response.

"You'll get traced like that."

"I've been here for a week. It was about time to move anyway... You have incoming."

Rong refocused himself into the battle at hand. Surprise etched itself in his face when the Golem was already in his face and swinging an arm reminiscent of an anvil on a stick. Rong braced himself on instinct and took the hit that shook his ribs and literally rattled his heart. He felt himself lose breath despite over half the force from the impact was absorbed by the R:Evolution's shielding.

Coughing and hacking, he saw the follow up strike through pain blurred vision. Reflex sending his six daggers stabbing into the Golem's left straight. The force of the punch itself digging the daggers deep into the plating. That arm blew up as unstable wiring coupled with system failure kicked in.

"There it is again!", Rong mentally noted. His daggers dug in too easily. There was practically no resistance. The daggers were covered in similar shielding as IS and his R:Evolution, helping them cut through standard shielding but not through AD.

The explosion knocked Rong away, losing his mental link to one of his daggers as the rest were also scattered all over. Another warning for another lock on him forced him to just fire his boosters despite having no idea of his orientation. Half a second later and a beam tore through that part of the atmosphere.

Flying out of control, R:Evolution skidded across the water's surface. Friction roughly tearing at the shields which were sparking in a blinding display. Rong pulled up as soon as he could but was too groggy to dodge a beam that hit him head-on when he righted himself. It quickly caught onto Rong that these unmanned units were actually employing strategy by keeping him off balance. If that was the case there was nothing to it but to do it.

Calling on two of his five serviceable daggers, Rong commanded them back to his hands as his mind silently blanked. Numbers, calculations and logic maps quickly ran through his mind. Scenarios visualized into seemingly three dimensional diagrams in his psyche as he watched the continuous salvo fly at him in relative slow motion.

Another set of wings on his back activated and folded itself over his head into a helmet. It sealed itself along the black material around Rong's neck as he followed the motion of his fall and let himself drop into the salt water. The blast meant to seal him from the sky missing its mark completely. Any succeeding attempt was shot blindly at the water which quickly neutralized the charged particle projectiles.

The Golems realized that and quieted their assault when they noticed that there didn't seem to be any sign of resurfacing. One splash triggered another assault and the golems quickly fired on it as the telltale glint of metal flew out of the aqua surface. It blew up nicely in an orange ball of flames which the drones classified as the destruction of the target. Both machines dropped their cannon integrated hands and studied the scene.

A more violent splash called their attention and their processing units were quick to realize that their target was not yet destroyed. But with bulk and weight their bodies had, physical reaction was two steps lagging compared to neural reflex.

Rong took advantage of this fact when he sacrificed on of his bits to get the drop on these golems. He flew out at maximum speed that being underwater could provide. The helm of his machine serving to give him an almost demonic appearance.

The boy jammed the one dagger in his hand roughly into his target's neck and didn't think twice as he called on another that whistled out of the water, marking the third enemy right between its visual sensors. Rong recalled his last two daggers and commanded the third to stab the second victim in the neck on its opposite end. The pilot spun with a backhand that hammered the third dagger deeper into circuits and wiring, spinning again into a round house kick that smashed the dagger he first attacked with hilt deep.

View focused quickly onto the third opponent impaled between where two eyes should be, he came face to face with the wide barrel of the beam cannon he'd been tormented with. Light began to gather in its dark end but he did not move. He could not move. Unless he wanted his fourth dagger to miss its mark, stabbing through the elbow joint of the giant and cleanly through the particle cannon. The weapon quickly deactivated and R:Evolution maximized its booster output, breaking through the sound barrier in under a second. One palm smashing the dagger right through metal skull. Circuitry and sparks in flew in morbidly fascinating resemblance to viscera. All in slow motion as the hyper sonic sensors began kicking in.

Feeling the trance break, Rong felt the blood in his veins wanting to just burst out as he could taste them in his mouth. Despite the PIC nearing the same efficiency as an IS's, R:Evolution at best was still an incomplete off shoot. Croixas refused to refer to it as a bootleg. Result was, as Rong was surveying, a serious damage to the frame with one wing torn off save for a few stubborn millimeters of steel. As well as more than a few cases of internal bleeding.

All that didn't matter though. The fight was over. He won and could go on his way to get medical treatment. Those two soldiers on the military plane weren't his responsibility.

Completely out of combat mode, Rong was feeling every bruise and wound he accumulated during the fight. R:Evolution kept most of it away but those radiation burns weren't completely blocked out and neither was the internal bleeding from his stunt. As it stood, he felt like he was about to pass out. Concentrating for what he promised to be the last time that day, Rong checked up on all his dagger bits and tried to restore that connection to the one he lost.

The proximity sensor went off with a warning of a lock. His sluggish mind check to see where it was coming from and was surprised to see that it came not too far off from behind him. He turned to see a surprising sight. The one-armed golem he took out first had its functional cannon pointed out at him. Unable to move his body fast enough, the blast was accepted by Rong and R:evolution without so much as raising his arms to block. Light bathed the boy, whittling the energy shield away and burning him.

"H-How?"

The comms link which had gone silent earlier came on again and the sounds of irritation from Croixas was the first thing Rong's swimming consciousness heard. "Damn that woman.".

"What... is it?", Rong managed to force out.

"The AD... she actually shut it off on purpose."

"Why would she?", Rong managed to force out as he splashed into the water.

"The Absolute Defense is the last line an IS pilot has before mortal harm can be done on them. To activate AD, the IS has to consume a tremendous amount of energy and in most cases leads to automatic shutdown."

"Stop dancing around the issue and tell me what the deal is with that mangled mess.", Rong ground out as he took time to recover under water. Such he didn't expect his proximity sensor to blare again as one large body slammed into his back painfully while another grabbed his leg and pulled him up out of the water.

Getting a good look. Rong recognized the one holding him as the one he'd stabbed twice in the neck. The two dagger bits were still there to prove it. Normally these drones were already out of commission with a lot less.

"Rong. These guys aren't like the ones you've fought before. Without AD, these machines won't run out of energy from your attacks. They'll continue to attack you until they end up killing you, spend up their near limitless energy some other way, or until their frames and cores are damaged or destroyed beyond functioning parameters. You're up against real killing machines.".

- Depend on the type of scar, where it is, and if you picked at it. Scars on my chin and elbows are prominent. Some of my facial scars are not (because they'r ein line with my glasses, nobody takes notice of them).

There's also the method: A surgically clean scar will stay the same, a scar from an infected wound may grow.

I've still got whip marks on my backside 30+ years after the fact. So, yes.

Oddly, I have burn mark on my wrist, and since its caused by molten plastic, definitely not clean. It stay the same size as when I was a child (roughly one inch), but get proportionally smaller to my body as a whole as I grew.

Did the reason why Rong initially took out the golems easily make any sense?

Well, at any rate, the only way to kill golem is
1. Core damage
2. Total mechanical gore overkill.

Rong seems to take second approach, but I'm not clear on it.

Were those the only ways to kill golems in canon?

Rong didn't even know about that logic yet. All he noticed was that the AD was not present and he just dispatched them as he would normally. Though normally such moves wouldn't result in machine gore cuz of the AD O.O

Indeed Golem doesn't have absolute defense, true glass cannon on the works, this is mostly because the lack of human operator (or at least, I and Age think so). Actually, the first machine gore was inflicted by Ichika, core damage was accidental.

Only the version III have meaningful armor, that I.S. weapon has problem penetrating them (which is why the main protagonist resort to first option, destroying the core). All thanks to Houki's stupid decision for aiming the arm instead of torso

Well, type II never shown, so as far as canon concerned, all golems doesn't have AD.

reverse logic. Tabane first tried to kill Rong with AD armed IS XD

The canon crew is surprised when he mentions the first time he fought them they had AD on.

Wait... wasn't the core retrieved during that one incident with the golems? Doesn't that indicate AD since it clearly wasn't shooting off enough to actually drain out its supply? Or was Ichika's one hit able to compromise the whole frame?

Tabane seems to subscribe to blue and orange morality, really. Using human standards on her is pointless.
