So few? Given Muv-Luv's roots as an eroge, I would definitely think that there would have been more heroines in that area. Given how many pictures there are of Inia compared to the other characters in this series, I bet that many people would have liked her to be "winnable" too. Of course, if Inia was "winnable" in an eroge, she likely wouldn't be voiced by Noto Mamiko--it's likely someone else like Shimizu Ai or Gotou Yuuko would have taken her place instead.

MLA has expended beyond its eroge roots if you look at the lack of it in ML Chronicles 3. It no longer needs it to sell.

There's no reason it can't revisit them. The "plugsuits" are very much a remnant of the series eroge roots. And I'm sure that some who disagree with Yuuya's choice of heroine in the upcoming series would like to change that choice if the series ever comes out in eroge form again.

Well I would say to play the VNs (which anyone should)... otherwise not so much else that I'm aware of.

If you want the 5 cent history, just look at the offical TE website, there's an english ver of the MLA world history.

If you want the graduate course, without going through the VNs, there are a few sources around. Just google them.

If you are asking what you need to know, the 5 cent history is enough, since the MLA series follows a different character and backstory totally. If you want full immersion though, reading up ML:E, ML:U, MLA would have you in tears.

I don't use windows any more. So it's either dual boot (fast but pain in the ass to set up properly) or VMs which are slow and have a ton of compatibility issues.
