As it relates to the "passionate debate" above (which is the real reason I was here), I wouldn't read too much into this short narration, as it's very open to interpretation. (The main purpose is just to establish that this movie occurs after the events of the earlier anime, and to very vaguely set the stage.) I'd ask that people avoid getting too heated and stop the personal attacks. Have to wait and see what happens.

They already confirm its a one movie sequel, plans can change but for now it's only a single movie. Maybe they could release a prologue OVA for the movie but I kinda doubt it.

Maybe, Ban Dai/Sunrise, is just sticking their proverbial toe in the water with this movie-sequel to see if this new story will be profitable, and if so, they may make more Code Geass (in whatever form) from there?

The problem is, the hook of CG is still the main cast of Lelouch and friends. They need to do more than Akito to establish that the franchise can run without the main cast from R1 & R2. Akito is CG's Gundam 0080. They need to do more side-story anime to establish whether CG can go on to be a mega-franchise worthy of various AU stories like Gundam.

Canon has layers. At the most basic level, what's deemed "canon" is every official product release by the company who holds the license. But in order to not confuse consumers, canon is divided to several timelines/continuities. Like in UC Gundam, there are TV-timeline, Movie-timeline, Novel-timeline, Manga-timeline, etc. This R3 seems to continue the R2 story or at least the compilation-movie version.

I always assume that Lelouch of the Re;surrection was going to be a TV series instead of a movie. Quite a bummer. I find movies to be quite condensed at times.

Just finished watching Oudou (Comp 3) and man was it one hell of a ride. I enjoyed it from the bottom of my heart and while I do have some gripes here and there, it was overall pretty solid and did the original series justice.

Spoiler for Thoughts and criticisms on movie:

The 'false king' and the 'knight of betrayal'. This was added dialogue that Lelouch and Suzaku used to refer to each other in the aftermath of them rejecting Charles' ideal and I couldn't have picked anything that describes them better than that.

I prefer how their relationship was handled in this movie as it really put more emphasis on their friendship over their antagonism/hatred towards each other. It was more apparent and pronounced in this movie compared to the subtlety it held in the original series. It was more blatant on Suzaku's end as you really get to see that despite hating/despising Lelouch, he still cared for and wanted to assist him with his plans.

When I say it's more blatant from Suzaku's side, I'm referring to the shrine scene where Lelouch begs him to protect Nunnally, the battle of Tokyo II, the scene where Suzaku goes to Kaminejima to stop Charles and also when they were in C's world. In term of visuals, those scenes remained largely unchanged, but you'd be surprised how much a little bit of modified/added dialogue can really change the atmosphere and context of the scene. The hostility that was felt between the two in the original series was dialed back a few notches because of this and honestly, it's a welcome change as I think their friendship should allow both to be able to be a little more civil with or understanding of each other.

I had no particular attachment or interest in Shirley as her presence in the movie was quite honestly forgettable. That alone should tell you that she was only kept alive to be used a plot device in the sequel movie. The movie's basically screaming at the viewer that Shirley will in some way be involved in Lelouch's resurrection. The added Shirley scenes felt like they were there just because tbh and then we have the edited scenes from the original series where she was inserted because she wouldn't have been present back then for obvious reasons (Rivalz and Millie meeting up after surviving FLEIJA and Kallen's scene in the epilogue).

One other gripe I had with the movie was how the BK betrayal was handled. In the movie, it was more Schneizel forcing them to betray Lelouch instead of them betraying him of their own volition like they did in the original series. They were basically pleading with him to give them an explanation why he did the things he did, but he didn't bother and simply continued his role-play. This was most likely done so that it'd make it easier for Lelouch to reconcile with and enlist their help in the sequel movie. Not a bad move, but the trade-off for it was that the scene wasn't as powerful as it was in the original and wouldn't be able to stir up feelings of anger or frustration in the viewer like it originally did. You'd instead feel sorry for them or make excuses that their hands were tied.

Oh btw, I'll mention this while I'm at it. Seems they want to distance themselves from the cart driver and code theories as much as possible, meaning that they want Lelouch's death to be an absolute in these comps. They leave no room for doubt here. All of the previous hints/scenes that fans used to use for supporting the theories have been outright removed.

When Nunnally touches Lelouch's hand, instead of seeing his memories at the moment of contact, (in the same way hallucinations are caused when touching a code user) the scene now shows her discerning his lies first, having her confirm it and then proceeds to show the flashback of his memories afterwards. (i.e. Thoroughly crushing the code theory right there)

As for how they crushed the cart driver theory, it was quite simple as they had C.C riding a donkey/mule by herself.

Anyway, the fact that they went out of their way to crush these theories lends credibility to the notion that these theories weren't baseless and that fans may have been onto something back then. I mean think about it, why go through all this trouble to alter these scenes to eliminate any doubt about Lelouch's survival if his death was intentional from the get-go?

Therefore, believing in the code or cart driver theories in the original series is fine and they may hold some credibility. Even if that timeline is no longer the 'main' timeline, we could simply treat it as 'what could've been'.

That makes perfect sense since the new movie is about Lelouch's resurrection. Pretty hard to resurrect somebody that is still alive, so this is a welcome change from my perspective.

Honestly speaking, while there are some things in the original series that are undoubtedly superior to the comps, I'll have to admit that some of the changes they made in the comps are welcome.

As a CG fan, I'd recommend giving it watch. I'm not saying that the comps in their entirety are superior to the original or that you should treat it as gospel, but there is some merit in watching it tbh. There would now be a divide between those who'd prefer the original and those who prefer the comps. As for me, I'm torn between both and quite honestly don't know which one I would put above the other.

Initially I wasn't going to mention anything about it, but then I gave it a second thought and felt that I'd address it as I was already giving my thoughts/opinions on the movie.

It just struck me as odd. That's when I put on my tin foil hat and more or less came up with the reasons highlighted in my initial post. I'm actually quite fine with the removal of the cart driver as I didn't believe in it myself back in the day. I leaned more towards the code theory and well, that too was brilliantly disproved in this movie.

However, by the same token, them going out of their way like that now lends credibility to those theories in the original timeline and the implication that the ending was indeed open to one's own interpretation.

It's a recap, but alters some scenes from the original series and adds in a few entirely new scenes as well. These recaps basically establish an alternate timeline and the sequel movie (Lelouch of the Re;surrection) is set in this alternate timeline.

So when you see us talking about the 'sequel', we're referring to Lelouch of the Re;surrection which is set to air Feb, 2019.
