If you're just talking about skinning the buttons, no structural changes to the page, that isn't so hard. Someone would still need to put in the time to work out what images need to be skinned, and what CSS options are open to the designer, with respect to our styles. Even if the idea has mileage in the future, I does not this time around.

But anyway, I missunderstood you... What you meant was create a different deviations of the current theme. That is very much doable just that there would need to be a really thick set of rules for the nomination phase so as to filter out all the unusable eyesores that pop up (eg. myspace like designs). I can see it as a very complicated contest even with automation (of what can be automated). Simple designs with color changing and use of 3rd party buttons may be frequent, since attempts at creating small icons do not seem to have been very successful. The contest would also require a lot of preparation.

It is the same as having a Series themed banner contest. Gender (series or otherwise), tone and feel should not be a issue. A "dark theme" is catering to just a % of the members.
These tend to have very high and specific requirements. eg. "At least one object related to either producing or listening to music has to be present in the entry. A character, text or musical reference in the design alone is not enough." -- SoTM

How do people feel about Chibi? I mean what screams out anime more than super-deformed anime characters, not to mention the apparent cuteness that comes along as a bonus too
The theme is very much so related to anime and will no doubt be easy to identify.

Yes!! I've become a lurker lately but I've been waiting for the next banner contest. I always think it's fun to try and the communities' creativity always amazes me.
I thought it might be easier to come up with a theme if a gradient is picked first because some themes would be incompatible with the gradient. For example, I don't think gothic would mix well with the current gradient used. After the last contest, I made a few gradients when the idea was floated about doing different times of the day to rough out what that might look like. I then made a couple for seasons and then just a few miscellaneous. You can see below what I came up with and what I associated it with. Winter Gothic Just wanted to make a purple one Fall Day Night or maybe space Dawn Just looked interesting

I finally decided to stop lurking in this thread. xD;
Hmm... In terms of a theme, I've been thinking that maybe we should decide on a theme that can be easily conveyed with a background like the sky contest did. For example, clouds on a blue gradient conveys sky to me, bubbles and/or waves on blue gradient conveys underwater, snow falling on a blue gradient conveys winter, etc. Just something that isn't necessarily dependent on the render itself, and can still be conveyed once the render is removed.
