I suppose it depends on what style you'd like, as there's quite a lot of music genres being covered by anime. I can't think of any specific soundtrack that I consider outstanding. BUT, I have yet to find an OP that impresses me as much as the first Vandread OP, "Trust"...

Since you like Lilium you might also take a look at 'Grace - Main Theme - Omega' from Jin Roh.

Escaflowne is my all-time favourite soundtrack. It's just epic. Other stuff by Kanno Yoko are great too, especially Bebop, Wolf's Rain, GitS, Macross Plus and Arjuna. She's my favourite composer if you can't tell by now.
I am also absolutely in love with the soundtracks of .hack//Sign and Seirei no Moribito.

I'd have to say clannad's at the top, for other new stuff I really enjoyed xam'd, and soul eater, actually what drew me into soul eater was the op1, op2 is great too, so is ed3 I believe. Overall this season has had some great music. For stuff from the past, FMA is at the top, Samurai champloo is really good especially the ed, and of course cowboy bebop. Of course most animes have really good music to begin with, but these are the ones that stood out the most to me, or atleast the ones I associate with great sound tracks. on a fun note, genishkens featured songs for Kujiki unbalanced also rocked, even though in the entire 2 seasons we only get teased with them.

I'm rather fond of Rozen Maiden's soundtrack; a nice blend of more classical Victorian-esque music and modern influences, which perfectly matches the show's setting. I especially love the piano pieces which I feel are composer Shinkichi Mitsumune's specialty.

I'm really mystified as to how this topic got morphed into one discussing OP/EDs and it triggers a pet peeve of mine when people isolate the OP/EDs from the BGM instead of looking at them as a whole entity.
To GreatTeacherKen, I don't know if you've listened to it yet, but since you mentioned Shinkichi Mitsumune and piano in the same sentence, I definitely recommend giving the soundtrack to Asatte no Houkou a shot because that album is practically made up of Shinkichi Mitsumune's piano pieces. Definitely a nice soundtrack that you can relax to.

Anything Kajiura Yuki. Mai HiME and Kara no Kyoukai have some absolutely breath-taking BGM. El Cazador de la Bruja and Madlax for great insert songs.
Agreed that Key/KyoAni combinations also hit the dramatic moment & gorgeous melody for drama gold. Air, Kanon(2006) and CLANNAD. From memory... and I haven't seen it in a while, but I think Fate Stay Night was pretty good there. Seirei no Moribito seconded. |
