It sure feels weird how we have two characters very similar to Jinshi but not Jinshi himself

That was a really HUGE episode.

Suirei being the mastermind is of course no surprise, but I didn't think the nice lady from the clinic was the one who subtly gave "tips" about how to make the abortion drug. I know it was hinted more than once that the little girls raped by the late Emperor held strong resentment, but still. Suirei made the mistake of underestimating Maomao once and paid for it, so this time she's taking her with her... which is like the worst move she could make since that's going to infuriate both Jinshi and Lakan.

The other surprise was Ah Duo standing in for Jinshi, I didn't suspect it for a single second. It was nice to see her again. Lakan is very strongly suspecting Shishou of being behind the assassination attempts and he confirmed he is color blind and therefore has royal blood with that neat little grape juice trick. Which means Loulan also has royal blood, and assuming she is color blind as well, she could pass the test as per tradition and become Empress. But they clearly have other plans.

I don't know if Suirei is the mastermind so much as it's clear that she and Loulan's family are collaborating, along with some of the other older court ladies (including Shenlu and possibly the "ghost story" lady).

Both groups want to undermine and and take out the Imperial Family, but while Suirei and co. are probably doing it out of a desire for revenge, Loulan's Family is probably planning to retake the throne as the true heirs to the Imperial Mother.

So Jinshi got a somewhat lookalike and Luomen & Guen seem somewhat alike

Maomao's on a boat! (Well, it could be a large carriage or a storehouse of some sort, but the audio sounded like waves lapping against a ship during that scene.)

Also, when did season 1 end chronologically? Wasn't Maomao's mom supposed to only have a couple of weeks left before dying? Did playing Go with Lakan rejuvenate her? Or did she have a few months left, not weeks?

I forget how long she had left, but it's safe to assume she's now getting the best healthcare money can buy in that time and place. That plus having something to live for has probably given her extra time.

I can't believe it took Luomen showing up to finally say the Quack Doctor's name (Guen) when Maomao's known him for two seasons

It was never stated how much she has left, just not that much. But she is alive for now. I won't delve into LN spoilers here. S1 ended about 9 months ago or so as people said.

I meant mastermind in the sense she's the one thinking up the plans in the inner palace. I know she's most likely just working for Shishou, although she definitely has personal reasons.

I'm surprised we've never heard of the two foreigner girls since their episode. It was implied one of them was about to put some plan into motion, but nothing happened as far as I can tell. Probably something for later.

Considering how pretty much everything that's been set up is coming together here, I'll be surprised if the foreign envoys aren't also part of the conspiracy.

wonder if Maomao still has the hairpin. She's clever, so she might have dropped it on purpose somewhere which would show that something happened to her. She wants to learn the resurrection recipe, but its not like she's going to throw everything else under the bus for it.
