i totally agree. thats the best way to put it. its the same as movies or shows except its animated.. just because its animated doesnt mean its for kids, and the stereotype about animation, rather than what anime is itself, is why people think anime is for kids. its not any different really.. the concepts can only be so different

Some Animes are probably for the younger generation (Or dubbed so that they are anyway ¬_¬), But I think it is mainly directed at people from 17-40 years of age. Exept Ghibli films and such which are in a lot of cases violent but amazing at the same time and also for the younger audiences too. But most Anime's have a lot of swearing and violence in them, you get it in basically every one out there.
If you look at Full Metal Alchemist, it can have a really Kiddy atmosphere at times, with the silly faces etc, but there is also quite a lot of swearing and stuff. |

Maybe, but as I see it, Anime is not a genre, it's a MEDIUM, but most people (outside of anime watchers) can't see that. My parents for example. They can't get past the fact that it's drawn and have voice-actors in stead of RL filmed actors. It's just like any other form of entertainment, but freed from constraints of, say... reality. If you can imagine it and draw it, that's the real difference.
In any case, genre is still not the right way to define anime because there would be too many sub-genres. It's a medium because it is merely a method to relay ideas and entertainment. Would it really be that much different if say, Death Note were portrayed not as anime but as RL actors with special effects? Probably, but the different perspective is something to consider.

My father doesn't understand why I enjoy anime, but he loves the movie 300 (as do I). I tried to explain to him how close 300 is to anime, in the sense that 300 is much like Beowulf, and Beowulf is almost anime. Not stylistically, obviously, but in the sense of RL versus animation + voice acting. For whatever reason, he can totally understand sitting down and watching Beowulf, but still thinks I'm weird for watching anime.
I think people, especially after a certain age, just can't get past the whole 'cartoon' aspect, no matter what you tell them. In their defense, I think it's silly for people to obssess over cars from the 70's, so to each his own. (As a side note, a chibi-anime version of 300 would be the most entertaining thing in the history of time.) |

Well it's just because it's what they call anything animated and since anything animated that comes out of Japan loosely follows a certain style that is quite different than the general american style....we classify it as anime.
