Miku Miku Dance(MMD) / Doujin Animated Videos Thread

Recently I've gotten into watching Miku Miku Dance (or MMD for short) videos. For those who don't know, MMD is a freeware program made for the purpose of animating Vocaloid music videos (hence the title), but it's been used for a whole bunch of other things. Anyway I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a thread devoted to this. While there is a vocaloid thread, this isn't exactly the same. That said, MMD videos tend to use Vocaloid characters, and also a lot of Touhou characters, so it's fandom overlaps heavily with those two. Anyway, even if you're not particularly interested in either (as I am), I think there's still a lot of interest here.

Anyway let's share any good videos we come across. Also of note, the center of MMD is Nico Nico Douga, it's hard to access NND if you can't speak Japanese, so if you give a link to NND, please provide a link to it's youtube (or other english language website) equivalent if possible.

I've included "Doujin Animated Videos" in the title because there are a fair number of good Doujin animations that are 2D, or don't use MMD, but share similiar appeal to MMD videos.

Many videos posted may be music videos, and while the music is an important element to a good music video, music videos where the visual element isn't noteworthy(eg a static image, or a repeating simple animation) should instead by posted in a relevant thread in the Music section of the forums.

Anyway, here's some examples of well done MMD videos I've found:

Spoiler for Music Videos:

Spoiler for Action Videos:

Spoiler for Humour:

And here's an example of somethings not made in MMD, but would be appropriate in this thread:
Spoiler for Non-MMD:

In addition, "MMD Cups" get held twice a year on NND, and information on it in English is scarce. Currently MMD Cup 8 is underway, and if anyone has information on entrants, finalists etc. it would be great to discuss about it and update anyone who is interested and doesn't know Japanese..

I once downloaded MMD because I liked watching the videos and I wanted to make my own.

Needless to say I failed, where's the tutorial mode--do they expect you to learn it from others, or does it com with a manual I never got?

I challenge anyone to emulate Michael Jackson's moves using MMD.

In fact there's a lot of Michael Jackson MMDs (for example).

The best I've found is this one:

Is it just me or are all the best models Touhou?

None of these impressed me as much as "Sweet Magic" did, the movements in that are smooth.

EDIT: some more quality Miku MMDs:

Here's the one video I think all who are into MMD must see.

And here's an example with one of my favorite models, it also happens to be one of the only 2 models I have and is the reason I first tried my hand at MMD--though I regret being unable to make her dance myself.

Actually there is one MMD that is a legendary champion :

RIP Michael Jackson : your god-daughter, the smooth criminal of Gensokyo, Marisa Jackson, immortalised you through this dance.

This one is not bad too :

But one of my favourites :

ALICE IN MINISKIRT.

I am abit of a sucker for cute dance moves.

there are a ton of tutorial video around and it not that hard really. it just that you'll need to spend a huge amount of time to make good animation.
IMO, MMD is one of the easiest 3D animation software out there

I think you can hack the Kinect to trace your moves, making it easier to use.

Indeed, you can use Kinect for Motion Capture, though I've heard it's temperamental, and still needs a lot of tweaking afterwards.

Anyway, it's a cool piece of kit, and it's great to see the creative ways people use it.

This one is basically a Umimeko model (Eva-Beatrice)

It was made some time ago. What I've been curious about it who is doing to cover for the song. It isn't the usual version with Miku singing voice. I like it becaues the singer has just the right amount of condesending in her voice that it fits Eva, and the modeler also has a similar condesending look in Eva's eyes that make her seem correct. (I have issues with the inside of the mouth).

There's also some decently made skits:

It's not bad, most MMD skits fall down on the writing and voices, with the animation being too stiff. The animation here is okay (though partially because it's stiffness is disguised by the style of nichijou's comedy), while it skipped the whole writing/voicing problem by ripping out some of Nichijou's audio.

Anyway, it makes me think there's decent possibility for more ambitious(IE longer...) doujin animation. Once they build up a big enough library of smooth movements, good quality models and backgrounds, they could do a lot of interesting stuff.

There's already some good examples of action sequences being made.

This one really stands out:

Some of the videos Don posted have me confused, how do they get their models/backgrounds etc. so shiny looking? I understand a quality work requires more skill, but how does skill get you shinier looking videos? Aren't we all just using the same program--MikuMikuDance?

Good question, I don't know anything about how MMD works, but my guess is that it has something to do with the rendering process. Someone else who knows more can go into more detail.

They may also be doing some kind of post processing after they've uploaded their videos to clean it up, a bit like what's done with some fansubs to remove visual artifacts etc.

Also probably has a lot to do with the quality of your models. The base models that come out with MMD aren't great compared to the user created stuff, like this one.

True, just because it's under the name MMD doesn't mean that's all they used.

The fight choreography is from Equilibrium.

Alternatively :

I find it amazing that the maker is able to incorporate all the major scenarios from 1-4 into this MMD.

Of course :

And it seems that you can switch bodies, or Alice just stole Sakuya's dress......
