Such a vile existence. My #1 character of all time who should DIAF. At least we get to meet Titania next which makes me happy.

What a screwed up guy. While the sorcerer was a scumbag, Matthew was arguably worse. Doesn't look like it took much effort to push him over the cliff. That guy broke well before Mina disintegrated. That he couldn't even comprehend the horror she was expressing says it all. Of course no doubt it took time to get there. Must have taken some time to put that shack together and gather the cats.

Probably wasn't all that hard to get started. Doesn't appear he ever cared for cats in the first place. And then the whole 9 lives thing gave him mentally a way out from what he was doing. Regardless it was a very necessary step for the cats to murder the heck out of him. He was so mentally shattered that he couldn't comprehend that you can't give medicine to someone who is liquefied!

Nice job by Chise though. She held her ground early on in the episode and found the best solution possible. Foolish sorcerers. You can't play Chise that easily. This is someone who was going to kill herself and then willingly sold herself into slavery. She doesn't really care that much if she's being lied to or being used. Her biggest worry is being tossed aside and being a disappointment. Life span concerns? Being used? Not really a big deal with her current mental state.

There's the part with Matthew feeling despair after realizing that he can't save Mina. The episode did a neat job at expressing the despair imo and violence imo. How can he just trust such a suspicious sorcerer...?

For Chise, I hope she realizes that Elias will be there to protect her.

A pretty thrilling episode arc with cats, magic, and showing what love can drive a person can do for someone. Such beautiful soundtrack used this episode for the end too...I can't wait for the OST to come out for this show.
I think it will be easier for Chise to realize that....once Elias actually gets good at protecting her . For someone who is apparently pretty powerful and well known, he really sucks at dealing with the unexpected. Whether it's a dragon swooping in to grab Chise or sorcerers (who they already know are hanging around) getting the jump on them.

I'm sure he cares, but I'm starting to think Chise is better off just learning to protect herself. Even when Elias is standing right next to her, she's rarely safe.

Another perfectly executed episode. Matthew was literally broken before the sorcerer met him and all of that was thanks to being desperate to save the woman he loves but in the end everything went wrong thanks to the hidden intentions of the sorcerer who took advantage ot this tragedy.

Watching Chise refusing to acknowledge what the other 2 guys were telling her about an upcoming death, finally she showed her real feelings towards Elias. The last part where she helped Mina and Matthew was beautiful, after so many bad things they finally can rest in peace while Chise learned a bit more about this world.

Ohh judging by the preview Titania is coming.

Chise's problems aren't ones that are resolved so easily. Having support in the form of Elias is really just a starting point for her. I think that she realizes on some level that Elias will protect her, but from her perspective it's more along the lines of someone protecting a valuable antique. She needs to learn to value her own life.

That guy said he "just had Matthew trust [him] a little." Sounds to me like some magic may have been used to make Matthew more amenable to carrying out this "experiment."

That is going to be a very long road for her to walk. Most of her life has been shaping her thoughts and feelings, bringing her to the place she is now where she doesn't view her life as having any value at all. It literally doesn't even occur to her to think of herself as being worth something. That level of psychological damage is not going to be overcome in a day, or a week, or a month, or probably even a year. It's going to take a long time, and a lot of help and support from people who value her, for her to heal from that.

Poor cats.

Hope they get that white haired fuck...

Anyhow, with some insight into death and life's fragility, maybe Chise can figure out what to do with her life

Whelp, with all the sorcerers introduced so far it seems that their infamous rep is pretty well earned.

That said things worked out well in the end for Mina, Mathew and the poor cats. Even without any training Chise is intuitively solving problem with just small bit information she learned. She has more than knack for this than might have realized it will take her far.

But the sorcerer who did all that is still at large, so I hope Chise doesn't forget his face or what he did when she and Elias will undoubtedly run into him some time in the future.

To be fair, this episode's plot doesn't make all too much sense to me. Why did the sorcerer need Matthew to prepare the potion at all if he was experimenting? Wouldn't he want to just brew it personally to make sure it's up to spec?

Also, however shocking it may look to Mina, what Matthew did wasn't really that different from what a butcher would do with chickens and cows - except instead of just being for the sake of food, it was for the sake of what he thought would be life-saving medicine. Granted, obviously from the point of view of the cats that's not great, but from HIS, why would he become THAT level of deranged because of it? We don't think that farmers who slaughter their animals are psycho guys, even though of course they do need to desensitise themselves a bit.

If he did it then he would have gotten the curses and ire of the cats. Instead, he gets off scot-free. Plus it is messy work, he probably just didn't want to do it.

I doubt creating it himself would have made a difference. The problem was with the recipe.

Well, usually one would imagine this stuff would require more understanding of the craft - even a chef wouldn't just give you the recipe and expect you to make a dish as good as his .

But this aside, yeah, I can get he wanted to redirect the wrath of the cats. That makes sense.

Mina was basically a lab-rat to the guy. He didn't want the cats on his case and considering how Mina melted from the liquid curse she ingested, it was a smart call. It does explain why cats don't like sorcerers in their village at all. They turned the King's human into a messy puddle and forced him to kill her husband, condemning all of them to a hellish existence.

Anyway, review/recap is up. That bit with Mina was like a horror story when she stumbled onto the shed, but at least it had a happy ending with Chise's help. Now if only the girl valued herself more.

I still don't understand if it's just random prejudice against sorcerers due to this specific one or if it's actually justified and all sorcerers tend to be dicks. As it was explained until now, sorcerers basically just practice a different sort of magic. The activities we saw in this episode in fact made me think of FMA's alchemy.

yeah, I think we can consider sorcerers as alchemists
and even in FMA, many alchemists there are genuine pricks

Well, yeah, but it doesn't necessarily come with the territory . Poor Alex Louis Armstrong is one of the sweetest guys ever seen in anime .

The sorcerers don't live in symbiosis with spirits the way mages do. That alone could explain why don't care for each other.

It's only that village in particular because of Mina and Matthew. But basically, mages get magic naturally and have to only learn to use it. Sorcerers have to work through some fantastical science to use it and hack the world. If spirits can change the world because they're a part of it to a greater degree than ordinary people, then alchemist hack the world to make changes suiting to them.

How can you say Matthew was worse than the sorcerer? Not only was it implied the sorcerer used a spell on Matthew like Random Wanderer already explained, there is also the fact he did those horrifying thing to save the life of the woman he loved (it doesn't excuse what he did, but at least he had a noble goal). The sorcerer, on the other hand, did it just for the sake of his experiments, and he knew all along it probably wouldn't work. He's without a doubt the worse one of the two. Matthew (albeit to a lesser extent), Mina, and the cats were all his victims. He was definitely the bad guy in that story.

I'm glad Chise managed to save their souls and preserve Molly's life. I'm worried about Chise herself though.

A benevolent view of Elias would see his actions as helping Chise learn to protect herself. He could be seen as acting rather parental, letting his "pet" find her own way but ready to swoop in and rescue her if need be.

On the other hand he makes these dissembling statements like not being able to deal with a dark haunting because he is "shadow" himself. Perhaps that's true, or perhaps that's an excuse to push Chise forward. Elias seems well-intentioned (though the business about Chise being an "experiment" is definitely disturbing), but he may not always be honest. Still, I did like his stilted "so da ne" when Chise asked him if he loved the world.

A tragic episode in regards to Mina and Matthew, as well as showing off Chise’s mental state. So Sayaka OHara plays Titania, looking forward to seeing that, I’ve always liked her.
