China face the same problem. They actually put up signs along the roads that say "there is no copper in optic-fiber" to discourage scavengers from digging these up.

A lot of metal theft around here also, from statues to freshly laid electric wires on construction sites. From what I've heard, in France, they have huge problems with copper theft along their railways, which disrupt their information network.

Yep, they'll have an emulator installed, I wish there's a free compiler, linker, libraries and all the other programming goodies included in the HD.

Well stealing metal is common over here from 2006-2008, until the government step up on police patrols on that. My neighbourhood has occasionally handles and guide rails for the disabled/elderly paths being sawn-off and stolen by the same people these things are built to cater for.

TWO US men were shot and killed today in Houston, apparently in a dispute over a lost mobile phone.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex at about 2am local time, KHOU-TV said. When officers arrived on the scene, they found one dead body at the front of the complex and another in the rear.

Witnesses told police that the two victims had picked up a dropped mobile phone in a parking lot after leaving a convenience store. The owner of the phone apparently rang the device and told one of the victims to meet him at the apartment complex.

The suspects arrived at the complex and fired on the two victims. One of the victims, who was handicapped, was immediately shot and killed. The other victim attempted to flee the scene on foot with a witness, but was caught by the suspects and also fatally shot.

The suspects fled the scene in a dark-coloured four-door vehicle and were being hunted by police today.

This one's a little old, but meh, it's pretty interesting. If this guy can do a tunnel at $250 a month, then why must it cost billions to do one here? I haven't seen any real useful investments to infrastructure around these parts for a long time:

Maybe because of the size and the necessary static and safety requirements in a tunnel that is used for (public) transport (that must sustain strong virbations and heavy loads over its lifetime).

Also the Geology and Geography play big factors in the cost of constructing tunnels of just about any type. While it is possible to build a subway line in an area with a high water table (just look at St. Petersburg and Amsterdam for example), costs tend to be higher due to technologies needed to keep out the water from the tunnels. Geology also plays a factor when it comes to drilling tunnels, as different types of soil react to tunneling in different ways (Seattle's glacial till has caused numerous problems for several major tunneling projects in it's region over the past several years, though not all of them involve transit projects)
