Quote:
In Maquia, the shujinko is Maquia herself, and Ariel plays the the role of heroine, only he isn't called that way because he happens to be a guy. The Japanese don't have an specific term for when the role of heroine is played by a male character, although it happens pretty often. For example, in Otome games, the girl is the shujinko and the male love interests play the heroine role despite being guys. Another example similar to Maquia is Kakegurui. Yumeko is the shujinko and Ryouta plays the role of the heroine. Indeed, if you reverted the genders, you'd end up with a similar dynamic to Yu-Gi-Oh, with Yuugi as the shujinko who plays in the games and Anzu as the heroine character who cheers for him from the sidelines. Kakegurui is just the same only with the genders inverted. In Index Touma is the shujinko. Misaka gets to be the shujinko in Railgun, but in Index she is just a heroine. In Danmachi Bell is the shujinko and Ais is a heroine, but in Sword Oratoria Ais is the shujinko and the heroine role is filled in by Lefiya and also Bell in his few appearances. It's extremity rare to have two shujinko in the same story. It's not impossible, but it's extremity rare.
