I bet next episode will be rushed because they need to put 4 manga chapter to 1 episode. I hope they skip opening or ending song..

Why compare with manga?

Ep1 barely adapted 60 pages of the light novel vol 1 & already feels so fast

the episode title gives it away how much will be covered in ep 2, and that's still just first 2 chapters of the LN in 2 eps

I assume episode 2 will end chapter 2, then 3 for chapter 3, 4 for chapter 4+epilogue.

The manga has been on my list for a while but never got around to it. Checked out the first episode and i see potential in it. Im partial to stories where a person is thrust into a leadership role that they dont really want since its interesting watching the character growth if done right. I get that feeling here but its also reminding me of another manga and anime from about 10 years back and i cant quite put my finger on it. Will continue to watch and see what i think. The animation is giving me some funny feelings im not sure if i like it or hate it, it feels more like i tolerate it as long as the story progression is good. But given that others are already stating the first episode was rushed i dunno.

Truth be told, I wasn't that interested in this series until I read this post. If Hope Chapman looks down on it, it must be good.

EDIT: And it is. Just watched it. I can understand why some people think that not enough was explained, and they were clearly in a bit of a rush storywise to get to where they did, but frankly, everything that needed to be explained was. This looks to be a subtler kind of storytelling than you usually get in anime, where you have to go in with an open mind and turn off your nitpick sensors, because if you think too hard about why something's not happening the way you expect it to, you'll probably miss it when the show tells you.

@Dresden, the characters in this series look to be intentionally non-stereotypical. They may revert into some semblance of familiarity later, and aspects of them already are, but for right now, just roll with it and see where the story takes them, without assuming. Don't try to figure out the whole series in the first five minutes. You can do that with some series, but it doesn't look like you can do that with this one.

This series has definitely caught my interest. Here's hoping the military aspects of it will be believable for me.

The character designs do bug me a bit, though. It's no more "sameface" than 90% of the other animes out there, but it's just that their samefaces don't look like everyone else's samefaces, which we've already grown accustomed to, so it's distracting. Hardly noticed it by the end of the episode, though.

I was nicely surprised by this episode. I liked the characters, their dynamics and the visuals. The bits before the opening seemed a bit in contrast with the episode. It seemed like Ikta came to take/save the girl, but if that's so it won't happen for a while.
On that front I admit that any incoming romance would have been welcomed, but reading the thread I got there's no chances.

Well, in any case let's see how it will go on. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

If anything what I'd like is the smart princess kid to stay in the kid zone and not jump fully into the loli zone, with taht I mean I'm glad that she had been treated as a kid so far.

Episode 1

So Ikta is among a couple of sexy girls, a loli princess, some fat guy and a bishounen. They get stranded on an island after their ship wrecks and they end up in enemy territory. And they have to decide between whether to surrender and become prisoners of war or break through the border and get back into their own country. The enemy can use the princess, Yatori and/or the bishounen to get benefits out of the Empire which wouldn't be nice at all. But the loli gets spotted while she was out for some private time. A girl can't get some privacy in this enemy land. And Ikta shows up in front of the lights instead of the loli to save her. That sentence in the end was cool, Ikta would become an invincible general. If this will have full blown military strategies with mind games and fooling the enemy and stuff, this could be pretty damn cool. I'm not fond of those prominent lips but it isn’t that much a turn off. The OP was pretty cool. Now to see how Ikta gets out alive.

Episode 2:

Nice setup episode. Ikta's clever mind and strategy paid off and they managed to outsmart their enemies.

I think this episode also defined Ikta's personality well considering his reactions after hearing about him being "promoted" to Imperial Knight. The world building seems nice so far while I think character chemistry between Ikta and Yatori is strangely appealing. Still getting used to the animation style but I think it's fine.

Since it's been years since I read volume 1, I'm not too sure of all the changes, but I do get the feel that Ikta's strategy felt less convincing in animated form than in text form. Other than that, the episode did fling a lot of information at a pretty high speed into the face of viewers; hope they are not overwhelmed.

One of the more interesting tidbit was Yatori's position in defending the crown even against Ikta.

Small translation nitpicks:
- high-level officer = commissioned officer;
- when Yatori told Ikta that "I won't be pinning you to the ground in front of the emperor", I would word it as "Don't make me pin you to the ground in front of the emperor".

As someone who abstained from reading manga/LN, I found the pace slow actually. Then again, to overwhelm me, you need to make the info fly out as fast as it did in Shirobako's episode 3.

Having read volume one recently i think they actually did very well. When you saw the episode you figured pretty easily what they would do. Considering how much had to be done this was paced very well. They were convincing and they did other things that were very good. The next few episodes are going to be very fun IMO so lets see what happens next.

It was far less convincing. More exactly, the soldiers facing him were not suspicious at all and didn't interrogate him any further, didn't have any doubt. We also missed the fact that he was talking with a correct kyoka accent/dialect.

Wow looks like some extreme nitpicking in here. As anime only viewers it was convincing enough. I dont need more exposition than there already is. The point was to trick and it worked in a way where it doesnt make the MC a gary stu.

This adaption so far I feel like im reading a novel, even tho i know nothing about it, while still being entertained. Def one of the better directed light novel adaptions ive seen. Hopefully it can keep it up and doesnt go orginal cuz the story so far seems so interesting i want to see what the author is doing with this. I dont mind skipping things as long as it doesnt hurt the experience of the anime as a stand alone piece.

episode 2
well they sure got back quick.

I actually thought the ENTIRE cour was gonna be 12 episodes of them slowly getting back.
Felt sorry for the patrol unit that got killed. At the moment, I like that it isn't painting the sides as good or bad. Just two major territories with tension at the borders so far.

Enjoying the world that's slowly being presented.

Episode 2
  • Whatever Republic must have VERY lax military and dumb soldiers. Its very hard to believe dude would have convinced a real soldier that way, let alone survived grabbing their weapons and literally shouting a command order. He would get bullet in the head for that in an instant. And then at the base they trusted a random dude in uniform way too easily without even asking for proper identification. Alas this is anime so I should not expect too much realism. Still felt way too convenient.
  • The spirit things really don't fit the setting. One second I am watching something akin to a war story, next moment I want to sing "gotta catch em all".
  • MC really is a more playboy-ish Yang Wenli. Kind of hoped he would be more ruthless going by previous episode but oh well. Really worried that he might skirt into gary stu territory though I guess his anger issues as well as his rash and spontaneous behavior is his flaw , so that's very unlikely to happen. Still feel his design is VERY unfitting for his personality, especially after somebody linked his manga design. Would be funny if he got fed up with all ths bureaucracy and went full on Lelouch. The way the show set up the Empire to look, some sort of uprising is par the course.
  • The redhead's honor rants are still annoying. Not much done to make her likeable.
  • The sniper dude freezing up(I guess?) was interesting. Helped to emphasize that they are supposedly newbies
  • The princess still keeps being naive. AT least seeing death close by should be a lesson to her how the world works. Kind of annoyed she seems to be falling for
the MC. Please no love triangles.

Overall far better episode than the first. Far stronger directing, far more coherent storytelling and better pacing except for that weird "one month latter" jump. Directing is okay , even though convenient dramatic wind(ex: when redhead delivered the newspaper to the mc) and all is hard to take sometimes.

I do like very unusual to anime middle eastern setting and aesthetics.

The second episode has definitely made this a keeper. The story is engaging, as the characters and their backgrounds are slowly unfolding. This time, we get a little more history on Ikta's parents. There also seems to be a lot of political and military posturing here.

Mostly, I'm wondering what is Chamille's true agenda in all this. Although she is 12 years old, she is definitely more intelligent than her age indicates. We had hints of that the last episode when she remembered details of visiting Igsem's home when she was just 4 years old. She was able to see first hand those who rescued her were able to do and judge their characters and abilities. She intentionally made them Imperial Knights in order to add them to the military. It looks like her most likely play is that she sees high potential in Ikta's military acumen, and she wants to use it for the future of her country. She also wants to gain favor with Igsem, as she probably believes Igsem will be a fine officer and very loyal to the royal family. In short, even though it might be against Ikta's wishes, she is turning him into what she needs for the future of this country.

The details and answers are there in the episodes, if you are willing to look for it.
