Unhappy Parents and Anime do not mix...

That's what my parents think. My dad doesn't understand what a 21 year old guy needs with a huge Azumanga Daioh Poster in his room.
To add to the confusion I have a alot of Anime posters, scrolls, figurines etc.

My dad claims that most characters are little girls and are supposed to be for little girls... O.o
So actually he says that my posters are not for guys at all.

I also have some Hellsing things, and that he understands because Alucard is a cool guy, a man and not a young girl...
I tried to explain the whole thing, but don't know how, because he says people might think I'm a pedophile or something.

I know I'm not, and I'm just an Anime nutcase.
How on earth can you explain you parents that being an Anime fan is just not for little kids only.

They think I should only have naked pictures of women and aggressive military stereotype guys in my posters...

Do you have the same problem? And how do you deal with it? Any tips?

The first question would be what is a 21 year old doing askign a question like this?

Anyway I would suggest you just watch anime.... why would you talk 2 your parents about anime?? If people ahve no experience with something form another culture they will compare it 2 something in their country that is similar.... In the case of anime usualy compared 2 cartoons thus for kids only.

Put some hotty hotty on the other side of the wall. ;P
My parents have never even heard of 'anime' before. Actually no one IRL knows I watch anime:P
I'm not trying to hide it or anything, but it just complicates things.

It's not a really big deal, it's just they don't understand "why" I could possibly like Anime.

Since I live on my own it doesn't bother me, it would be a lot more fun if they would at least understand.

And yeah it's the same thing with cartoons. Anime is rather new to Holland.

Every Anime picture I show to somebody who doesn't like anime they always go like "Hey Pokémon!!...right?"

It's the only thing they know.... Anime and Manga altogether.

My dad also did the face at me while watching the "bottle Fairy" Anime.

I have to agree, that Anime is designed for kids only, I can tell, but if you are trying to learn more japanese like me it is an anime of great value

I tried explaining that too, but they go like "Why would you learn Japanese? you never go there..." riiiiight.

Well, you could try getting them to watch some Anime, but not something really wack like FLCL or shojo like Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, at least, not at first. Probably somthing more general like...well, it depends what kind of parents yours are, but maybe Full Metal Alchemist? Or Gundam SEED? Nothing stereotypically kiddish, that's for sure. Something with theme. I'm sure you can think of better examples. Or, you could move out. But that might not be possible (no offense meant. )

Personally, I don't mind them being totally ignorant of Anime entirely (my dad pronounces it to sound more like 'enemy'). Then again, I'm not 21 years old, so you can totally ignore everything I've said.

My parents wouldn't even know what the word anime meant. Of course I'm a parent myself so I'm sort of an acception. In my house we often watch anime as a family. My wife and daughter aren't into as much as my son and I, but they like Maburaho, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Twin Spica and some of the others I watch. If your parents are into drama you might want to try them out on Area 88 or Yugo Negotiator.
It probably won't fly though. Most people in my age bracket just aren't into the whole subtitled cartoon thing.

As for Parents and Anime not mixing, I like to think I'm the acception.

Do you mean "exception" or "acception" ? Anyways, I agree with them not being into this stuff.
We grew up with cartoons thus it's alot more normal to watch anime for us.

My parents didn't know what it was or that I even watched it until my ISP starting sending letters threatening to cut us off for using too much bandwidth. I had to explain why.

I don't watch it with them around. They wouldn't appreciate it. They wouldn't understand what is so good about a "cartoon" or why they have to read subtitles. So I just don't mention it to them. We're a family of introverts, if no one talks about it, it's not a problem.

I'm a parent, I didn't say I could spell
That would be exception I guess , I never could tell the difference.
At least one of your parents should have fond memories of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. Even my dad watched that and he's almost seventy.

It's just such a shame that something as great as Manga and Anime is not very common in most countries.

Most people here see it as violent and sex cartoons... which is kindof...true I guess
But those are the ones shown.

Pokémon and Digimon are the most commercial Anime's around here, then there is this $%#$%^#$%&$ crap called ChinChan.

I guess those three are not to be called a good example, and yes Pokémon is for kids... little do they know the large amount of anime around.

My love hina scrolls cause the most irritation with my dad.

I have one for example showing Naru practically naked... and he goes like "it's a little girl!!!" I go "no she isn't!!!" he goes "yes she is, they are all little girls!!!"

"no dad she has breasts..see?" he goes "I know, I can see that!! That's the problem!!" <--- this conversation actually happened.

It took me another hour to tell him about Naru and let him know she's is not just some little girl.

even though I would kill for a poster of shinobu that way

Just to think of it, he thinks my Hellsing stuff is neat. because it's more manly or something....

Lol, my dad (who is in control of the internet bills) would probably figure it would all be porn and forget about it.

Being around your age I've never had this problem because I don't like/watch alot of cute anime. I like anime filled with action and drama like Berserk, Hajime No Ippo, Kenshin just to name a few.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad to watch those cute-kind of anime. I watched a few episodes of Azumanga Daioh, thought it was pretty funny... watched up to 10 or so.. then it just got too old and they played the same joke in different ways over and over again. So I stopped watching it.

Also, you do have the title "ethernal Shinobu lover" under your name. It's not in my nature to judge anyone by a silly title but it's kinda misleading considering Shinobu is like... 15 or so(or was she younger?).

Anyway, what you like and dislike is of your own... as long as you're not hurting anyone by watching the stuff you enjoy, I see no harm in it. Parents are thick-headed but in the end they'll either learn to respect your hobbies or at the very least, learn to tolerate them.

I still need negative rep people! Help me help you! Give me negative rep now~

You're 21, why do you allow your dad to even be in your room? (or care what he thinks for that matter)

The name of this thread pretty much sums it up.

Anyway, just put of some poster(s) of naked women up as well...really, that way everyone wins

Good luck...

I think you should just ignore your father.
There are lot of people like this and unfortually your father is like that.
If you like animes and your father doesn't understand this then just ignore him, people never change, especially when they think like this...

It's always bets to ignore the ignorant people around you. I had a similar problem with my family until I forced them to watch Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien ...

That changed their opinion from anime equals sex and violence to something quite different. By now they realise that anime has as many genres (if not more) than regular tv has. Side effects are that by now my brother-in-law is addicted to anime as well (he's become quite a Naruto fanboy )and my sister is into anything that is dramatic or romantic .

To some of my friends who looked weird upon me because I watched anime I showed stuff like Ghost in the Shell and Full Metal panic (FMP was a bigger succes than I expected), so most have come to accept it.

basically you should consider the fact it's more important the way you feel and think about yourself than the way other people think about you. Caring too much about other people's opinions is the same a living in a jail, never any freedom, always afraid of everything...

PS Don' t worry about the Naru posters I have a "very revealing" poster of Rei Ayanami in my bedroom, not to mention alot of anime posters throughout my appartment. Most visitors actually say my appartment is rather original

LOL people keep asking what he's still doing at home, but he said he was on his own. I'm 21 and away from my parents, but I guess it may not be as weird for me since I am a girl. My mom tends to give me the face when she sees me wearing something like a GTO or Witch Hunter Robin Tshirt or when she called as I was rushing out the house excited to go get my Fruits Basket Manga. I think she just chuckles most of it off though. I really want to get her to watch something like Grave of the Fireflies that she would enjoy. My sister is the one who gives me a hard time about it. She calls me on the phone and hears Japanese in my background and says "You're watching that Japanime crap again, aren't ya?" I shrug it off, say yes, and get on with the conversation. I think she would like it if she ever tried the right series, but I am too indifferent atm to even bother to show her yet. My dad is a lost cause. I'm his baby though, so even if I was addicted to pr0n he would smile and nod and think I was an angel.

I just wouldn't let your unaccepting family/friends get to you. Tell them to be thankful its half naked chicks instead of guys. ^_~ (No offense to anyone, but that would probably get his dad off his back.)
