Haikara-san ga Tooru Zenpen ~Benio, Hana no 17-Sai~

Haikara-san ga Tooru anime filmed announced for 2017.

Plot Summary:
Quote:
The manga is set in Tokyo in the Taishō era (1912-1926). The story follows Benio "Haikara-san" Hanamura, who lost her mother when she was very young and has been raised by her father, a high-ranking official in the Japanese army. As a result, she has grown into a tomboy -- contrary to traditional Japanese notions of femininity, she studies kendo, drinks sake, dresses in often outlandish-looking Western fashions instead of the traditional kimono, and is not as interested in housework as she is in literature. She also rejects the idea of arranged marriages and believes in a woman's right to a career and to marry for love.

Haikara-san's best friends are the beautiful Tamaki, who is much more feminine than Haikara-san but equally interested in women's rights, and Ranmaru, a young man who was raised to play female roles in the kabuki theater and as a result has acquired very effeminate mannerisms. Haikara-san's betrothed is Shinobu Ijūin, a second lieutenant in the army.

I'd rather watch the original 70s anime instead. I just love me some old animation.

They just revealed more cast and visuals: http://natalie.mu/comic/news/238095

Sakurai Takahiro as Aoe Tousei
Nakai Kazuya as Onijima Shingo
Kaji Yuuki as Fujieda Ranmaru
Seto Asami as Kitakouji Tamaki

The first movie opens on November 11.

I don't know how I feel about Miyano Mamoru as Shinobu, but the rest of the cast is solid. And as there will be two movies hopefully everyone will have enough screentime. (Also I kind of hope they'll change the ending with the Very Convenient Death of the rival... I always hated that trope.)

ETA: Also, I know the second movie is still far away, but I wonder if they'll make any efforts to include any hints/stories from the epilogue/gaiden. Tousei's Paris adventure comes to mind...

The bold choice to change the aesthetics alone is going to take some getting used to. The story, though, should be as compelling as the original, unless someone has seen indications that there will be significant deviations in that sense as well? The story and its themes are still poignant today so I personally think a revival is to be welcomed, in that regard. The second film has been confirmed to cover material not originally adapted from the manga in the 1970's anime.

ANN recently reminded us that Warner Brothers had announced in July that there would eventually be subtitled screenings of the new film(s) in United States theatres, while relaying information from Be Love 17, that Waki Yamato Ends Ishtar no Musume: Ono Otsūden Manga in November.
The announcement itself seems to indicate the series will be on hiatus until then (Be Love 22, scheduled for release November, 1, 2017)

Announcements which also mentioned a Blu-ray / DVD box set for the TV anime; that the historical setting and its depiction in Yamato's work / "Haikara-san ga Tooru" will be explored in an exhibition at the Yayoi Museum in Tokyo, between September 29 and December 24 (Currently listed under upcoming Exhibitions) 「はいからさんが通る」 展 ~大正♡乙女らいふ×大和和紀ワールド!~ and that the Takarazuka Revue is going to stage productions at two venues in October.

Huh, those visuals... maybe I've been spoiled by having just finished Shingeki no Bahamut (holy moly that last episode was gorgeous, from animation to scene composition to just general direction) but from this trailer the visuals come off as unimpressive and the animation... actually kind of meh, considering that this is a movie. And even animation aside, some shots look good but others are rather uninspired/clichéd, which I consider a shame when it comes to adapting classic shoujo manga, especially one with so much flair as Haikara-san.

Oh well, this is just a trailer, the finished film might be overall much better than the trailer makes it look like.

(But what happened to Tousei's hair?! Those beautiful curls, all gone!)

Natalie: Pictures at an exhibition - and this one too- making it apparent, again, that these are remakes with a new cast -in animation too- but no change in period setting.

Wait, what? The movies are obviously simply new adaptations of the manga, not remakes with a new cast. All the characters are there.

An older adaptation in anime exists with a different voice cast and characters who look different than those now appearing - the visual appearance change compared to the originals is thus also in some respects a change of cast, the impression of different actors in the same role if it had been live action - and so is the currently staged Takarazuka Revue's interpretation with the actress, otokoyaku, Yuzuka Rei in their cast.

The different aesthetics also place each of the works within a specific time as far as the character design is concerned. Dating the creation of the manga and the original animated adaptation to a specific time in the past - a time which isn't the time period depicted, Taisho Japan. The 2017 remake, this year's animation, dresses its characters in Taisho era clothes as well but the artwork, the character design, clearly date this animation too, ties its creation to the present time. The design has been "updated", the period setting of the period piece has not.

... and on a related note:

While the magazine itself has colour pages devoted to "Haikara-san..." as well.
