I agree, but Usami is a lot stronger now that she has friends that care about her. Things turn out well for her in the end even if she can't be more than friends with Jiro.

What is so good about this series is that ALL of the girls are EXTREMELY likeable (unlike Infinite Stratos) and Jirou is not that bad of a protagonist.

What makes this story so great is that it's not just a series about the girls trying to win the guy, but instead it's about character's growth. All of the characters in it are better and stronger people by the end, and I think that's what makes them much more endearing.

7pm, Usami said goodbye to Jiro and left on her motorbike/moped. Jiro had a errant thought that all the girls around him seems strong in their own way, and by the time they’re adults they’ll be stronger. Jiro hopes though they don’t turn out the same way as his mother (Japanese pun, mentally strong and physically strong are both ‘takumashiku’).

Jiro made his way back to his own home. He made up his resolve to become Suzutsuki’s butler. For Subaru who accepted his feelings, for Kanade who allowed him to do so, for Usami who said he’s her friend. After thinking about it, he thought he better contact his mother and give her a report about this.

Then he was interrupted by someone – Konoe Nagare. Jiro thought this better not be a sudden appearance of the final boss or something. He made small talk, saying it’s a surprise to see him here. Nagare replied no, it’s not a surprise, Kanade had changed Jiro’s GPS setting and then set it up so he can find Jiro through his cellphone at any time. Nagare is here on Kanade’s orders. Jiro’s thoughts: “Go to hell, Suzutsuki Kanade.”

Jiro then remembered Nagare’s cellphone was supposed to be broken, and asked him about it. Nagare replied he had a spare phone, it’s expected of butlers. Jiro’s worried that based on Nagare’s past actions he’s here to eliminate him. To his surprise Nagare only told him “follow me” and walked off. Jiro was told Nagare will treat him to dinner, but a while later it turned out to be instant noodles they bought at a corner store. Jiro thought would this be his last supper? Even Jesus will be surprised at this for the last meal.

Nagare told him to eat quickly or the noodles will go soggy. Jiro asked why is a butler for a well off family eating instant noodles, and Nagare replied don’t think too much about it. It seems Nagare actually likes eating this stuff – something Jiro thinks Subaru have in common with her father.

Jiro was about to eat, when Nagare asked him did he propose to his daughter. Jiro’s nervousness finally caught up to him and he can’t even taste the noodles (which was his favourite brand). Jiro would rather go practice wrestling with Kureha than stay and keep talking. Nagare had seen the text and finished talking with Subaru – he’s here to tell Jiro the results of their talk.
Jiro thought he might have be mistaken about Nagare, since he had thought Nagare would have turned this into a bloodbath already. Just as Jiro was considering Nagare might be surprisingly mature about this, Nagare said he had already killed Jiro over 130 times in his head – he can probably last another 30 minutes without trying to kill Jiro. Jiro thought it’s scary to be able to say that with a calm face. He thought his life might actually be over if Nagare ends up as his father-in-law.

Nagare says he changed his mind about Jiro. As they talked Jiro found Kanade has been feeding lies about what happened that morning. It could be trolling, or it could be calming Nagare down…
Nagare says he still dislike Jiro though, since he got kissed on the cheeks by Subaru. Jiro retorted he doesn’t like Nagare either. Jiro thought back to his conversation with Kanade on why Nagare seems to dislike him so much, and he asked him. Nagare sighed and told Jiro it’s because the two of them are too similar. It sickens him to admit it, but Jiro was almost exactly like Nagare when he was younger. Jiro half-jokingly asked did he propose to someone during his high school life as well, and Nagare involuntarily snapped his chopsticks. Jiro was shocked/worried that Nagare actually did do that as well.

Nagare says no, he didn’t propose to anyone during his time at school. Jiro was relieved, thinking not everyone would do something like that – then Nagare dropped a bombshell on him, saying he eloped instead. Jiro involuntarily snarked that’s even more extreme than what he did. In retrospect, he did remember hearing something about that during summer vacation. Jiro commented eloping is a bit much, and Nagare retorted he doesn’t want to be told that by someone who proposed in front of the entire school. Jiro thought they might be very similar after all, and might get along well after being part of the same family.

Jiro asked if Nagare got subjected to professional wrestling moves by his family as well, and he replied of course not, he doesn’t have that kind of monsters in his family – does Jiro? Jiro admitted that’s part of the Sakamachi education, it seems. Nagare stiffened, and double-checked if Jiro’s last name is ‘Sakamachi’ – Subaru and Kanade always had called him ‘Jiro’, so he never found out about Jiro’s name. Jiro took this chance to explain about his family, his sister Kureha and their mother Akemi. Nagare’s face turned blue after hearing Akemi’s name. Jiro asked what’s wrong, does he know her, and Nagare stayed silent. Jiro felt like he stepped onto a landmine, and asked if they knew each other – Nagare grunted in reply. Jiro has a really bad feeling about this, but forged on ahead and asked what’s the relationship between Nagare and his mother. Nagare broke out in cold sweat, and after holding his hand to his head and gazed up into the night sky he replied:

“… She was my ex-lover.”

Nagare and Akemi went out during their high-school years, and she was his ex-girlfriend.

Jiro freaked out at the revelation. Nagare tried to get Jiro to calm down, the neighbourhood might call the police. He said going out with ‘Chia’ was something that happened a long time ago. Jiro snarked who the hell is ‘Chia’, and Nagare explained it was a nickname (SakamaChi Akemi) that everyone called her back in their school years. Jiro did NOT needed to know that. He couldn’t handle the renowned beast of the Sakamachi family had such a endearing nickname and was once Nagare’s lover. Nagare explained even they were young once. Jiro commented Nagare must’ve been really capable for being to handle his mother. Nagare replied Jiro seems cold in saying that, isn’t he her son? Jiro shot back it’s because he’s her son that he understands her mother’s personality. Nagare commented Chia was indeed a handful ever since she was small. Jiro felt a sudden kinship with Nagare, thinking he might even be able to have a ‘alliance of ex-victims of Sakamachi Akemi’.

It then turns out Akemi had planned on teaching her kids professional wrestling from back when she’s a student. Nagare didn’t have the guts to dissuade her from that path, and ended up encouraging her to do it. Jiro was pissed at that, as his life was wrecked partially because of Nagare. Nagare was surprised at how Jiro’s staring at him like he has a grudge on the same level as killing Jiro’s father. Nagare then shrugged off that Jiro’s life was a mess, he had went through a lot during high school as well. Back in the days he and Akemi went to the same academy as Subaru, Kanade and Jiro. He’s been in the same class as Akemi for three years throughout that too.
Various things happened, and he broke up with Akemi – Nagare was thankful things ended with only three broken ribs on his part, considering Akemi was known as the ‘typhoon on two legs’. After breaking up, he met Subaru’s mother, eloped, got married, and ended up with Subaru.

Putting all that aside, Nagare’s feeling somewhat more assured – if it’s Akemi’s son then he won’t wreck things with Subaru.
Onto the main issues: Jiro wants to marry Subaru and become a butler for the Suzutsuki family. Nagare cannot agree with that, both as Subaru’s father and as a butler of the Suzutsuki family.

So, there will be a condition Jiro has to fulfil in order to do so. If it wasn’t for the fact Jiro had been a good influence on Subaru and made her change for the better, he would not be doing this.

And it turns out to be a fight. Defeat Nagare, and he’ll agree to Jiro’s wishes. Jiro thought is that alright, even taking into account how Subaru’s like a bodyguard for Kanade. Nagare replied he had taken Jiro’s skills into account – if it was a real traditional test for a butler, Jiro would have no chance of passing. At least this way Jiro has a chance of success. Being able to beat the pulp out of Jiro is just a bonus. The time is this weekend, at Suzutsuki family’s mansion.

Before he left (and throwing out the trash from eating noodles), Nagare advised Jiro: “If there is something you want, then try and grasp it with your own two hands.”
Jiro was surprised at Nagare’s advice. And feel kinda annoyed Nagare feels he has enough confidence to be giving advice to his opponent.

Jiro feels he can accept this, and if doing so will allow him to be with Subaru then bring it on.

Great summaries has always Flere. Poor Usami and those bastard parents of hers. Oh well, she's doing well without them and she has a real family that will love and be there for her. Usami, you're definitely the best girl in the series in my eyes, and watching her grow and develop over the course of the series was a pleasurable experience. Even though she can't be Jirou's lover, just being friends/family with him so that's a huge bonus. Rabbit-chan, I truly adore you to no end.

I think Jirou explained it a bit earlier in the series. Jirou's father died when he was very young. Before he died he gave him some pretty good solid advice that pretty much became his main drive throughout the series.

Chapter 5 - Suzutsuki Kanade
Jiro got back home. Kureha told him Kanade went back a while ago. Jiro asked Kureha to fight with him right now. After hearing about Nagare’s conditions and Jiro have to beat him in a fight in order to marry Subaru, Kureha agrees to train Jiro.

As Kureha left to prepare for the training, she asked if Jiro has made up his resolve – according to her instinct, Nagare would be on about the same level as their mother. And Jiro has never won against Akemi before. Kureha nodded, and said if Jiro has that kind of resolve then she can get serious. (image here: http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/a...okool/P151.png )

Playing with him all these years she had to hold back, as it would be no fun if she curbstomped him in seconds. Jiro in his mind started to beg someone, anyone to come and save him. Kureha said she has only ever went serious against Shure, but if Jiro has made up his resolve then she can let loose. She tells Jiro to fight seriously as well, unless he wants to be wounded before the fight against Nagare. She then ran off to their dojo in the basement, their usual place. Jiro was left thinking he stepped onto a extra large landmine called Sakamachi Kureha and he needs a bomb squad here to not get himself killed. Jiro left to change his clothes into something a more fitting one for sparring, and thinks he needs to write up a will. He wasn’t joking about the will part.

Scene break, and we jump 4 hours after that to half a hour past midnight. Jiro finished a shower and collapsed onto his bed. He moans that Kureha isn’t human, because of his strength. He got utterly defeated by her. Kureha told him to not give up, he isn’t using his full strength, that’s all – they’ll continue this tomorrow. Mind clouded by exhaustion, Jiro reached for his alarm clock before sleeping. Remembering everything that has happened that day, from his proposal to Subaru all the way to the spar just then Jiro is dead tired. Closing the light, Jiro is about to nod off immediately…

“Ara, you can’t sleep just yet.”

Jiro instantly lost all his sleepiness and tried to get up at the sound of that voice, but someone is mounted on his midriff and he can’t do so. A palm covered his eyes and he can’t see. And after his spar with Kureha he can’t fight this person off, he has no strength left. After she said “good evening, Jiro-kun” he finally realized it’s Kanade that’s on top of him. She commented he doesn’t look well – was she that heavy? Jiro exclaimed why is she here, Kureha had said she went back already. Kanade said she had left a window open and after leaving she came back inside climbing through the window, and hid in the closet. Kanade told Subaru she’ll stay at Usami’s place tonight, and will go back later. As Kanade was saying how she has to see Jiro tonight no matter what, Kureha’s voice came from outside Jiro’s room asking if something’s wrong. Jiro’s first thought is to call for help, then it’ll be 2 vs 1 and he won’t be at the mercy of Kanade. Kanade saw through his plan and asked if he really wanted to do that – she’s currently naked.

Jiro’s mind went blank as Kanade dropped that bombshell. Like there’s nothing left after a nuclear explosion at ground zero. Kanade then proceeds to outline the events, that if Kureha sees their current situation while Jiro is going out with Subaru it’ll be bad, Jiro will be seen as cheating on Subaru. On a day that should have been the anniversary of the proposal date in years to come, if Kureha sees this she might go berserk. Jiro realizes that, if he calls for help and Kureha sees this then he’ll definitely die a gruesome death.
Kureha wants to come in and see what’s wrong, and Jiro can’t allow that. Kanade said she had told Kureha she went back already so can’t step in here, so Jiro has to think of something himself. He tried to talk Kureha out of coming in, but Kureha’s sixth sense is suggesting there might be someone in Jiro’s room with him. Out of desperation he decided to play a risky card, he might lose the respect of his sister among a lot of other things but no matter what he has to survive and marry Subaru.

He convinced Kureha he’s currently naked and his mindset had changed after being in a relationship, he can’t sleep unless he’s undressed, and Kureha believed him. Jiro was actually surprised Kureha was this trusting of other people’s words, and didn’t like how she thinks he’s some kind of pervert.

Kureha left, and Jiro asked Kanade to explain why is she here. Kanade teased that in this kind of situation of course she’s here to do ‘that’ with him. Jiro thinks this is completely rubbish, she saw him propose to Subaru just that morning. Jiro’s heart raced after she lifted his shirt and her soft fingertips caressed his flanks (Flere821 note: I’m just translating the descriptive words as I see them, I’m not dramatizing this needlessly).
Kanade then said “For just tonight… let me become yours.”

Jiro couldn’t comprehend what Kanade is saying, she’s being too blunt about this. Kanade explained she got a text from Nagare explaining the coming test and conditions, and told Jiro he doesn’t have to accept that condition. Just tonight, accept everything she has and she will make him a butler of the Suzutsuki family with her priviledges. Even Nagare can’t go against her orders. Like a devil with a contract, Kanade is tempting him, calling his name in a coquettish tone and moving her soft touch onto his ribs.

Dark and soft hair; pure and flawless snow-white skin; eye-catching figure; and finally her wide eyes that’s gazing at him. Gazing like she wants to hear his answers.

Jiro replied he understand, he’ll give her his reply, so please get off of him for now. Kanade knelt on the bed as Jiro brought his upper body up, and then he reached for her hand. Slowly, he lifted her hand up and kissed the back of it. She was surprised by the kiss. As Jiro took his lips away he said that’s the furthest he can go. She is his friend, and eventually might be his master. To a certain extent he has to listen to her, be a source of her entertainment, and he doesn’t dislike this chaotic lifestyle. But for her, he can’t go any further than this – that’s his answer.

He chose Subaru, and not Kanade. Jiro felt he has to explain this clearly. Kanade laughed, and thanked Jiro for giving his answer. Jiro says no thanks was needed – besides, she wasn’t serious about her seduction. Kanade is Subaru’s original master and still her best friend, there was no way she’d try and get him at this point. Kanade admitted this was indeed a test, if Jiro had accepted she would not have let him be her butler. Jiro still complained she didn’t had to get naked for this, and Kanade smirked in reply, saying the atmosphere is also a requirement in making the test work. Jiro turned his face away so Kanade can get dressed.

After some time of silence, Kanade asked in near-tearful voice how did Jiro figure out she wasn’t being serious about her temptation. Jiro explained that they’ve been friends for almost a year, of course he’d know. Kanade is Subaru’s best friend, and while Kanade lies like there’s no tomorrow she’d never do something to betray Subaru. Kanade knows her temptation doesn’t work on Jiro – and Jiro says she did what she just did probably to affirm that fact for herself once more. Kanade agreed, saying she wanted a decisive answer, as she was still confused if Jiro might fall for her. She did so even knowing she’ll be rejected. Cutting off her lingering feelings, like what Usami did earlier that night. Face her rejection and moving on.

After getting dressed, with a carefree smile on her face and no tears in her eyes, Kanade told Jiro he must become her butler. Jiro replied without hesitation he will do that. He’ll be by her side, not as a lover but as a butler. Kanade asked him just what exactly was the test, and Jiro says it’s a fight. Kanade commented she expected something more civilized, did men all like fighting each other? Jiro said he didn’t mind, and this is expected of Nagare. After wishing him luck, Kanade quietly left.

This encounter in the night has ended, and Jiro thought he will never forget what happened that night.
