Yes, "Volumes 1-4" are the single disk versions of the first season (before complete sets became all the <money-saving> rage).

Some more images from the BD-Box courteous of 2ch and Twitter posters:

The cases have 3,2,and 3 discs respectively (first two are main series, last case is bonus discs). Only episode/disc order confirmation we can gather is that Melancholy I-VI is on the first disc.

Here's a couple shitajiki of Haruhi and Mikuru to compare to the Yuki in the second picture.

And here's a couple of images from the first OP that was re-done in HD. They're in 1920x1080 png size, so I'm linking instead of showing.

The first part of my article about the box is ready, unfortunately, so far only in German. But the photos and a large number of comparison shots (over 100) should be helpful even without understanding the text^^:

So what's the deal with everyone holding lemons on the discs themselves? Is that some Japanese thing or something?

I found it amusing that the video bitrate spiked at over 40mbps during that bit in the new OP. :P

It's a parody of a Japanese magazine, I believe called "The Television" where everyone on the cover is holding a lemon, for no particular reason.

You can see a cover image here.

According to Yahoo News/MantanWeb, the Oricon weekly rankings show the Haruhi Box sold 31,000 on Blu-Ray. Not as much as was claimed to have shipped, but it still became the best selling anime BD-Box.
