I don't think the censorship effect that much if comparing gore screens Higurashi and Umineko. Because blood in Higurashi brought up tragic feelings, while Umineko gave off mystery aura.....

In more visual way, Umineko's was like looking into the abattoir and try to figure how cattles were killed there. While Higurashi's feel like seeing your pet being butchered right in front of your eyes, and what occupy your mind is "why?" . The same blood and death bodies but it's really different

Yeah that's pretty much what I think too. Umineko is more focused on the mystery while Higurashi was more focused on the horror... well, the anime was anyway.

Regardless of who did it, it is was quite distracting. I don't think it's reasonable to blame Deen, of course, nor does it prevent me from enjoying the series but that still doesn't change anything.

Why does everyone think it's meant to be scary? It's not.

Well, playing the game, I was pretty scared! Not too much by the murders or gore though (just REALLY grossed out). But when I first played the games, I had a few dreams that Beatrice was standing in my room, lol.

I find the idea of being played as a piece in a chess game according the whim of insanely powerful witches who have some really sadistic preferences to be very scary.

I personally don't mind the censorship...probably because I'm not a huge fan of gore lol ^^ I like Umineko for it's story and character's more. I'm not at this point in the visual novel (only started ep 2 there) but it is true that the anime eps don't go into nearly as much depth as the novel, which is explainable, but I will say that DEEN is doing a pretty good job.

Especially with the animation - watching DEEN go from the first season of Higurashi to Rei and Umineko - I have to say that the animation has really improved ^^

The animation in Rei and Kai was arguably better, but many can agree that Umineko's animation does beat the first season of Higurashi most definitely. :3

I find that it goes back and forth in different episodes, I think this particular episode of Umineko suffers animation-wise.

Higurashi was simpler to animate overall, it had very little action scenes and most of the scenes involved small amounts of people; then we have umineko with those crazy fights and murder scenes with 6 death bodies and 6 other persons watching and reacting to them.

The art style for Higurashi was also more simple compared to Umineko.

and seems to be considerably low budget as well.
I don't think they anticipated that franchise to be such a major hit.

Yes but ultimately he wins and finds the truth. It's a matter of pride and proving his belief that magic doesn't exist.

Anyway I can't help but feel that the wolf and sheep puzzle is going to prove to be a total red herring in the long run. It seems to oversimplify things considering that one really clever wolf would be capable of taking out a pack of sheep who's attention is focused in the completely wrong direction.

I guess the only thing I have left to say about this episode is that I love it's characters logic...especially during the scene with fake Kanon. When the response to a dead guy just getting up and walking is not, "You're Alive?!!!!", but instead, "What did you say?", you know something is off.
