We can clearly see how much they want to reduce the influence of over-dominant series here.

I'm more interested in how many votes we can get this year.

Good News: If I'm reading that right, they're doing repechage the way they should have did it last year - Throwing all the losers into one big "second chance" match, rather than having a repechage
single-elimination mini-tournament that goes of for weeks.

Bad News: 3 repechage rounds is really pushing it. If I'm reading that right, some girls might end up getting 4 chances, which is a bit much.

Still, I probably prefer this handling of repechage on the whole, to what we had last year. Even with 3 rounds of repechage, it looks like it'll take up less time than last year's two-week repechage mini-tournament. This also appeals to the pro wrestling fan in me, since these repechage matches will likely be analogous to battle royale and Royal Rumble matches in pro wrestling.

...and when you consider how shows like Saki and Madoka Magica were affecting the tournament in a negative manner because of said over-dominance, I'm for the idea (if it works).

As an addition, maybe it would be good if defending champs have to take a year off. I mean, I get the appeal of seeing if a defending champ can win again or not, but since it's never happened, it's not currently much of a question, imo.
If the system they are doing for this year fails to prevent over dominance, I hope they do that system for AST 2015.

Saki has plenty of newcomers along with their veterans. Assuming they bounce back to their 2012 level of strength, they still have plenty of opportunity to flood the bracket. The D'Hondt method thing sounds cool but it's being used for second preliminary. Characters from second preliminary largely don't matter and neither does the method of choosing them. At least this will be fast which makes it better than previous years. We've finally reached the point where second preliminary takes up a single day.

I like the larger emphasis on 1v1 matches. But can the Puella Magi lose if there aren't matches like Homura vs Ayase vs Madoka?

Repechage seems cool. Short and spread out so it doesn't lead to a long lull in main bracket voting.

8 groups of 4 where top 2 advance into a top 16 single elimination bracket. Sounds familiar!

I'm not sure what you mean by 4 chances. Each repechage round leads into the next round except for the last round. If you are second in Round 1, you need to advance 3 times to come back to life.

I initially misread it, so thanks for the clarification. Still, why not just have one big repechage? I think they're making this more complicated than it needs to be.

Starting to look a bit like a rowing regatta now. Also I kind of wished they'd have tried ''Hare-Clark'' before using ''D'Hondt'' for the series vote.

Or for the main contest they could have used AV system viz:

Yes, it was supposed to be like that but they have changed it. To make it easier to separate between veterans and newcomers, all girls belonging to series or franchises that participated in past tournaments now go to the "veterans" groups. So for example all Saki girls are in the veteran groups even if some of them have never participated in Saimoe before.

So now:
Y groups = new series/franchises
E groups = franchises who already participated in Saimoe

Anyway, the draw has finished. Here are the preliminary groups:

I had some time to look closely at the lists of characters for 1st prelims today and I wrote down names for some notable or potentially notable girls. I probably missed quite a few, particularly from animes I haven't watched.

Translating the entire list (nearly 3000 names) is totally out of the question for me but if someone has the time, please go ahead, I'm sure it will be appreciated by many.

Damn, Manaka is not gonna survive in her group and looking at the 3000 names in the groups. I'll wait out to see if I'm ever gonna participate in it. I don't like the idea of participating in something and realise it to be rigged right in the middle. A bad aftertaste.

Of course I'm hoping things turns out well and we have a newcomer winning but hopes ain't high.

Well, time to reappear since AST2014 is about to begin...

Haven't look at the prelim groups yet. Will start throwing names out after I do. At least they're finally trying to do something after the tournament become stale and boring...

I was tempted to pass on AST 2014 thinking that this year's winner might once again be from the same series..... but with so many good new and returning series that I know of, I couldn't resist giving this year a chance as well.

The "newcomer" group are simply...well, not easy to even pick 10 girls sometimes...

Spoiler for My pick for Y1:

3x Gochiusa, but I'm heavily supporting Koma-chan.

For Y1 I would be surprised if the 3 Gochuumon girls and Komari doesn't take the top 5.

Spoiler for My Y1 picks:

Did they change the code generation restrictions? I just successfully cast a vote in Saimoe for the first time in 5 years.
