I missed most of the meat of the episode, especially the parts concerning Hayate, due to lag ;-;
The important part though at the end though:

Freyja for some reason doesn't seem to have passed the Walkure audition at the Macross Elysion, so she's riding a monorail back.... just as the entire car's windows blacken, and there's a Var Syndrome alert coming in. One of the men in the car suddenly attack and kill a woman with blood spattering everywhere, and he's shown to be infected by Var.
Naturally, Freyja is knocked down and she almost whimpers in fear as the Var-infected man stands over her, until she remembers the reason she wants to join Walkure and then sings to the infected man to cure him of his disease.
... or so it looks at first.
Turns out that the other passengers in the car were Mikumo and the rest of Walkure in disguise, and the Var-infected man and his "victim" were also actors playing along. And due to her bravery under fire, Freyja is given her holo-costume on the spot, and welcomed as Walkure's newest member.
Also, from the bits I saw of the episode's first half, I like how Delta, as with Frontier before it, once again shows us lots of world-building tidbits that make Ragna really feel alive, including showing Ragnarians as being amphibious.
Missed the OP unfortunately, though what I heard of the ED was really nice and catchy.

Quick recap at the moment Hayate and Freyja are shot down. Mirage saves them. Walkure continues singing.
Loyd orders the knights to pull out. Bogue doesn't like it.
Later in the aftermath Mirage punches Hayate.
At Windermere the Knights are dissatisfied. Keith talks to Loyd. If I'm getting it right they seem to be on a schedule.
Hayate and Freyja boarding a yellow freighter arrives to Ragna. Ragna has an Island class at the bay. Sea Cats everywhere which Hayate is alergic. A bunch of kids try to sell Freyja a cat wrist gadget like Ranka's frog phone. Oh Ragna is home of merpeople.
They go to the auditions where they meet Chuck and Mirage. Chuck took a bite of a Windermere apple.(Death Flag?)
Lots of cute girls trying out. Hayate is asked to meet Arad.
Freyja is monitored for Fold Wave strength like other girls and analyzed by Walkure.
Arad and Messer talk to Hayate.
Freyja seeming failed is sent home on a train. News reporter reports Var outbreak. One guy goes berserk. Freyja falls down terrified but her player plays Halation the War. She starts singing it.
Freyja passes the secret test. Other passengers were Walkure and staff disguised with holography. Freyja gets her holographic uniform like in DYRL with Hikaru and MMinmay.
Hayate gets convinced to join admiring a VF-31. Mirage shouts not to touch it. It's hers.
As for the OP Hayate and Mirage seems to be the second coming of Max and Millia. Aerial Knights as shown with Keith do have helmets but holographically hidden like with Brera and the VF-27.
I've been spoiled by all the streaming sites these days, waiting for fan subs to arrive and avoiding spoilers again seems really slow now, but what can you do.

Well, H x M's relationship just got off the wrong foot. Hayate pretty much called Mirage out (Amateur!!).
Kingdom of Wind technology is apparently preventing any recon data to be taken.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ANIMAL? A CAT DOLPHIN?!
Freyja has apparently never seen a Macross-Class?
Why the hell is Earnest Johnson's name... Earnest Johnson? That is the most-absolutely-lamest Zentradi name, ever! That and he is very large by human standards. I can only imagine how big the man is when restored back to Zentradi size (or the reverse could occur ).
The audition is so rigged Its as rigged as any Chinese counterpart of the American Idol. The judges already knew who the winner was.
Hayate has what appears to be a fold crystal around his neck. NEWEST THEORY: He is Alto & Sheryl's son!!
H x M started off in the wrong foot and ended this episode in the wrong foot as well. Yeah Hayate, don't touch people's planes. Seriously, I can feel Mirage here.
Also, Freyja has a different shape for the thing in her head. I thought it was because she was a girl but the one that the queen has is different and looks more like the guys' one. Maybe she is special.
Hmm... it appears that Mirage's primary character development for the first part of the series will consist of 'chill the fuck out and get off your damn high horse.' Every other word out of her mouth is speaking ill of others and doubting whether they truly understand the horrors of war. Not a good look for her sadly, though Hayate does respond in kind by taking a dig at her off timing in the staged maneuvers, and he will probably be integral in getting her to learn to believe in people and have fun with her job. Hope the learning goes both ways here, as his 'my pace' personality still isn't growing on me. Totally a Slap-Slap-Kiss romance angle, so again shades of nearly every other successful romance in Macross. Reeeally gotta wonder if Kawamori is trolling us here.

Well, he is only half Zentradi, and given that the Zentradi are still new to this 'having kids' thing, i can see one deciding to defer to the human parent when it comes to naming conventions.
Funny thought: what if he has a genetic defect like Klan and that is his macronized form, while he's like pocket-sized in miclone form? Edit: Oh wait, that's what you meant by 'the reverse.' Heh; clearly this needs to happen.

Aaaah... well, that could be an amusing reveal as well, and probably more reasonable. Still, it would be pretty badass if he just towers over Valkyries in macronized form and gets to smack one of the Knights around at some point.
Watched the episode in raw. I haven`t facepalm this much since Frontier. VF-31 is soo sweet. We get to see the SV-262 Draken in Gerwalk mode (seems it lands that way without landing gear).
BTW I see Freyja has one big "antenna" up her head standing while the Kingdom of Wing`s pilots, officers, queen has 2 small ones hanging down. What's up with that?

Speaking of ecchi.... Frejya actually calls Hayate that after he mentions something about her "Run Run", before Freyja covers her heart hair. Anyone know what that's about?
