I generally listen to and write music that can best be described as progressive instrumetal (instrumental / metal portmanteau), since I everything I write is instrumental. It's my personal belief that a handful of notes or a single chord can say volumes more than any lyrics can. Don't get me wrong, that isn't all I listen to and write; this topic is only about my favorite genre, though, so..

Bands like Rush, Dream Theater, Primus, Nevermore, and Freak Kitchen are my favorites.

I enjoy music that you can't really put in one specific genre.

Primus, Tool, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Team Sleep, Mr. Bungle, The Mars Volta, NIN, Pitchshifter, Bjork, Portishead, Massive Attack, Soul Coughing...stuff like that.

That's not to say I don't enjoy music that can be categorized. I just feel like too much music gets put into the wrong category these days, because it doesn't have a category of its own. In the list above, Tool could easily be replaced by Incubus (the early stuff), Deftones, A Perfect Circle, and a number of other bands, and I would still call them without categorization.

I like to think I span the genres pretty well.

On one end there's the Death Cab For Cutie / Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton lullaby-ish sorta stuff.
In the middle there's The Hush Sound, The Honorary Title, The Format, Cobra Starship pop-ish stuff.
On the other end there's ...Hawthorne Heights? Coheed and Cambria? I don't listen to REALLY hard stuff.

And then off in space float things like m-flo, AC/DC, The Roots, and other things I can't think of at the moment.

i'm not sure exactly how to label the things i enjoy listening to--maybe indie or folk, i suppose? i like stuff like halou, tapping the vein, elysian fields, haley bonar, maria taylor, trespassers william, et cetera.. although i do have a penchant for alternative music, such as nirvana, chevelle and blindside.

when i was about 14, i used to be obsessed with japanese music, but now i really can't stand it, sans a small handful of artists (rurutia, origa, sakamoto maaya, akino arai, and yoko kanno being the only ones i can remember off-hand).

Jpop, Jrock and anime soundtracks are like the only music I listen to.

I am very close-minded and fixated on one thing...I know.

Classical wins for me... Seriously though, most anime OSTs do feature classical music, so if you're here in this thread talking about anime music, you're talking about classical for the most part.

I especially like more modern classical music like the stuff Mitsumune Shinkichi writes.
