I need anime with TONS of magical fight scenes

My boyfriend likes some anime, but not a lot. He really likes the ones with lots and lots of well-animated action, preferably with a lot of magic going on. Here are some of his favorites:

Naruto
Bleach
Fate/Stay Night
Nabari no Ou (we're in the middle of it)

He especially likes Naruto and Bleach and watches the new episodes every week.
Nothing yuri or yaoi or harem or explicit, please. I have to watch it too. I can stand fanservice if it's just a tiny bit, but panty shots seven times an episode gets really annoying.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Either the first anime version (has a good english dub), or the new version called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which follows the manga storyline.

Either would be good.

Other possibilities include:

Inuyasha (fantasy adventure and light romance- has a very good English dub)
Full Metal Panic (action/adventure romantic comedy- good English dub)
Read or Die (the OVA- 3 episodes so you could watch it like a movie- good English dub)
Soul Eater (comedy/action/adventure- there is some fanservice the first 3 episodes- bath scenes and so forth- but it goes away after that, I guess it was male audience bait or something).

Since you didn't say how he feels about dubs vs subs I included mostly anime with good English dubs. (Brotherhood is not yet dub, and I never heard the Soul Eater dub so I can't say on that one). If he prefers subs that fine- although I recommend the Inuyasha English dub over the Japanese any day- and usually I prefer subs. The Japanese Inuyasha dub was horrible.

Im going to second Full Metal Alchemist, and Soul Eater.

In terms of mainly good fight scenes, I'll also add
Shakugan no Shana
Scrapped Princess

There are also a few with what i think are good action, but weaker plots
Tokyo Underground
Night Wizard

The following are good, but a little fanservicy, not too much.
Ga-Rei -Zero-
Utawarerumono

Then there are some ongoing series i think he might like
11eyes (warning, panty shots galore, but not in your face obvious)
Seiken no Blacksmith (Warning fan service heavy, boob armour... that is all)

I would think the various Nanoha series might be a goof match.

Ah, I should have mentioned Fullmetal Alchemist, that is another one he has watched and really liked. We watched a bit of Full Metal Panic, but he really doesn't like the mecha thing for some reason. *shrug*
Soul Eater he tried but passed along that it was too fan-servicey to watch. I'll have to look into watching it past the first three episodes, thanks for the tip!
We also tried Inuyasha, but I think the plot moved too slowly for him, he likes fast exposition, fast plot, lots of action. Read or Die is an excellent suggestion, I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. And you're right, the dub is a good one.
Nanoha we watched an episode of because we had seen an amv and it looked like it had lots of magical action, but if I remember right, it was too cutesy for him.
I'll have to look into the other suggestions. Thanks so much, keep them coming!

Hmm... okay, I'm stretching here, since most of the suggestions I made were already tried, so some of these are more on the outskirts of your suggestions. (Also, Brotherhood is very different from the first anime after about 13 episodes- I think it's worth watching in addition to the first version),

Chrono Crusade maybe?

Chrome Shelled Regios is pretty action packed... although I thought the plot got rather weak in the 2nd half. Lots of haremish romance- but not a lot of fanservice that I can think of. (Unless you count "cool beauty maid" Felli, and the swimming pool episode- which was actually rather low on the fanservice for a beach episode). Oh wait... there is the whole Queen groping Leerin thing... I guess I blanked that part out because it was so stupid... Anyway, has a lot of flaws, but it's not a terrible anime... sort of mediocre. I, like most people, watched it for the Felli shin kicking comedy.

Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars is a possibility. Crest of the Stars has what I thought was a good balance of character development and action. Banner of the Stars I is essentially focused on a space battle- I liked it because it was rather realistic- but I've heard some complaints about spending 3 episodes fight mines/homing missiles- it also has some exposition parts that action oriented people could do without.

Not Japanese, but I assume you've already watched Avatar: The Last Airbender?

There is also always Dragonball... and maybe Tenchi Muyo- probably the Tenchi Universe version?

I don't know... I don't watch a lot of action anime. I like them- but I tend to like thinking ones like FMA. (Chrome Shelled Regios caught my attention because the protagonist was not the normal type, but instead an amoral realist driven by the need to survive- such a waste of good potential- Felli was fun to watch though).

If you're open to a science-fiction show with well-choreographed battle sequences, I'd recommend Noein. It's a steal at about $20 for the entire 26-episode boxset at Amazon or RightStuf.

Hunter x Hunter is a cool shonen if he liked Naruto and Bleach. Kekkaishi isn't bad too! Get Backers is good with charismatic characters (except in 2nd part).

He can try One Piece, Hitman Reborn, D.Gray-man, Rave, Shaman King, Tsubasa Chronicle but I don't really like these anime/manga (but they are really popular).
A new shonen animated: Fairy Tail but I'm not a fan of the manga.

I'm not sure Index is really... actiony enough for the OP. It's a great show and it does have quite a few good battles, but it's more paranormal stuff, kinda like The X-Files in animated form.

Still highly recommended though.

another vote for hunter x hunter! i cannot stress how amazing this classic is

yu yu hakusho (another one by same author as hunter x hunter)

flame of recca (ripoff of yu yu hakusho)

avatar the last airbender is really damn good as well

one piece, fairy tail

a lot of these suggestions are not action oriented. stuff like shakugan no shana, scrapped princess, inu yasha, chrono crusade, chrome shelled regios, crest of the stars, etc. etc... have WEAK action. yes, i said it. these animes are mostly plot driven romances or operas with some sword waving.

the animes i listed are the pure shounen types that fit more closely to your examples

I started watching Darker Than Black and was instantly hooked--I hope he likes it as much as I do. ^_^ Hunter X Hunter I watched a few episodes of and it strikes me as very similar to Naruto, so I bet he'll like it. D.Gray Man I'm also looking into, along with several others.
Thanks so much for your suggestions! You were really helpful.

It's been a while since I watched it but I think X TV series might fit the bill. It's about the fight for the future between 2 opposing supernatural groups. Powers range from elemental to magical.

Since he's into popular anime, try Death Note, and if you liked it, Code GEASS. These two will help break the fighting craze with heavy plot twists and mind games.
If not, pure action/fighting is summed up to:
Busou Renkin
Fairy Tail (new)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (can't belive it hasn't been suggested yet:P)
Darker than Black
Black Cat
SCRYED

The last three all include people with supernatural abilities taking it out on each other.

Since mecha seems to be fair game now, Gundam 00.

Some of the best fight scenes in any mecha anime I've ever watched.
