Also summoners magic has only been around for less then 15 years so imo it's more realistic that less counters for it have been developed. Also who in the right mind would use a sword of all things to develop such a counter. I mean the sword is pretty much the weakest weapon in the modern age. Most modern weapons render the sword obsolete as a weapon so if anything I'm surprised that someone didn't invent a gun that can pierce the magic shield thingy (or they did and we haven't seen it yet).

Kanae's Nr 2 and 3 didn't completely suck, yeah, but the way the guy is persuaded that he can be good, too, is questionable anyway. "I thought the prez was an exception, but now I've seen another good swordsman. Maybe I can do good, too." is questionable in general and stupid if the "other good swordsman" has the same background as the first. To me, anyway.

And no, the discrimination is not justified. It's too crass. It's like the swordsmen aren't even human. If swordsmen were born differently and everyone was drilled "swordsmen are worthless" from birth, then yes, it would be reasonable. But neither are swordsmen born differently, nor is there such conditioning. There wasn't enough time for such prejudices to root so deeply. Until a few month ago, most of the first year summoners were normal girls (who made some effort to become summoners, yes, but they were still normal).

Although upon reading back, I also do think you are exaggerating the level of discrimination. To most of the girls on the magic side swordsmanship is something of a joke akin to a bad fashion sense and swordsmans the equivalent of the easy weird kid to pick on.

Sure their described as canon fodder and no one on the magic side expects anything on them but would you expect the weak bullied kid to actually defend you competently?

And also it's just words thus far. The actions shown thus far is only mocking and err..... more mocking. It's easier to say shit but I doubt most of the girls will be so indifferent if it actually came down to it.

Before you point it out, yes I realize sword side students have been severely hurt to the point of coma but I would like to think of those cases as the exception rather then the rule.

Probably because they had no idea until they actually enrolled in that school. Kazuki certainly didn't.

Also it appears that being a swordsman require dedication on their part. I imagine it's not a easy decision to quit a career you spent countless hours preparing for.

There's also the fact that the career sounds promising without context. I mean for most people it's probably, "I get to defend a bunch of hot chicks in highly revealing clothes, while swinging around a sword? Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!" instead of "holy shit, I'm a literal human shield for a bunch of bitches that can't care less if I live or die. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave me."

Not to mention that with some thought the general swordsman should be superior to the general summoner in live combat... (summoners who can coolly chant their little spells while a swordsman is whacking away at them are the exception, not the rule)

Don't see how live combat matters at all.

The true worth of summoners isn't live combat. It's their ability to nuke and deal lot of damage given enough time that gives them their value. So what if a swordsman can beat a summoner given the necessary range? They still can't make a building explode just by pointing at it.

Also I wouldn't be sure about the whole general summoner<general swordsman.

You're basing that info off of a biased source (namely Kanae). Kanae's easily one of the strongest and the most agile out of the swordsman. It's far, far easier for her to pressure the summoner (or 2) and make them screw up. For the average swordsman they might lack the strength to actually disturb a summoners concentration.

Hell IIRC Mio even managed to cast a level 2 spell while Kazuki (one of the strongest swordsman) was pressuring her....... so yeah screwing up a summoners concentration isn't that easy.

Lastly I doubt that swordsman would be so disheartened if they actually can win in live combat. It feels more like they did try but failed until Kanae came along hence why they rely on her so much.

Except for the Prez and Vice Prez, who are second years, and the 1st year trainees, the student council is absent. It stands to reason the others are third years and away on internships. It stands to reason the whole student council and not just the presidents is picked on a power-basis, so usually, the WHOLE student council will consist of third years. Who will be away. Who's ever going to do the job they're supposed to do? (If the student council consisted of "the strongest 2nd year students", the fact that the others' absence hasn't been noted and explained yet is a completely new magnitude of writing fail, so I ignored it)

Also, a system where the third years are out of school all the time sounds stupid to me. Just make the school 2 years long and add 1 year of mandatory internships or hands-on training in several areas. But I guess then you'd lose the oh so important "high school lasts 3 years". *sigh*

Yes, maybe everything can be explained, but that something so fundamental has yet to be explained to make sense just screams FAILURE in my eyes.

I just went along with it since I've read worst plot lines and thinking to deeply on harem LNs hurts the mind to much.

I think it was literally mentioned that the style was intended to deal with magic-users. That's why reading the flow of magic to predict the (danger area of) the spell is one of the fundamentals. That can be seen as "a way to deal with summoners" since it won't be required against swordsmen. Okay, the usual enemies of the knight corps seem to be illegally contracted magicians, but those have even less weaknesses than official ones, and I don't know if the dad cared about them... as you said, he hasn't been mentioned a lot ^^.

Don't ask me where exactly all of this is mentioned, but the "find a way to deal with magic-users" should come up twice or thrice throughout the volume...

Make them waste their resources, overwhelm them when they're weak. Sneak attack them. Strike them when or from where they least expect it. And I think it would be easy to scare someone's pants off if you suddenly charged at them, swinging a sword and hitting them all over the place (since they're blown away when the magic defense activates). If all the summoners could keep their concentration up while under attack, they wouldn't need the swordsmen as much, right?
As a matter of fact, many summoners say Kanae can only win because she sneaks up on them. They also (incorrectly) say in a (rule-wise completely biased and unfair) duel, Kanae'd lose easily. And the reason nobody duels her because there's no recognition to gain is convenient/cheap as heck.

About Mio getting out a level 2 against Kazuki.... that's because they started a fair distance apart and she kept running/backing away, I think?

Yeah, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. I'm a bit hung up about that lesson where the teacher explains the common formation where the swordsmen are sacrificed. I know the scene is only in there to further show how the swordsmen are unfairly treated and to get an emotional response out of the readers, but it's just so obvious...

While I can easily ignore weak plot elements, just like you, it got a bit much here. And once I start wondering... It's just so much easier/more enjoyable to read an LN with less weaknesses or where I don't notice them. This one still has its strengths, mainly in the protagonist department, and the heroines aren't too bad even if the harem antics are a bit bland, but I can't just ignore the amount and persistence of the weaknesses. But I don't hate it or think it's horrible beyond saving (before someone gets me wrong again...)

It's true that Kaguya is still the strongest character in the school and based on my estimation, it'll remain that way for another volume or two, but it's a different scenario if Kaguya has feelings for Kazuki.

Yeah, I agree that we can conclude that he's competent just from Kazuki's mention of his skill

Although I would laugh if it turns out that one of the few competent adult is a irresponsible skirt chaser or something along those lines....... it's actually quite likely now that I think about it. Given Kanae's eccentric personality and how Kazuki is basically the only one that takes care of the house and implied to be the most mature in the household.

Can't say I played Super Mario so I didn't learn anything from it. However I did learn from Dragon Age Origins that mages>>>>>>>>>>>anything else.

I do see your point but it's not that convenient. How do you make them waste their resources? Where are you suppose to ambush them? Yes it's easy in theory but I don't think it'll go so well in practice.

For the concentration thing, I always interpreted it as they needed swordsman as human shields (literally their job description) against other summoners. Since if their hit by a spell their magic goes poof and obviously their concentration would be more then a little disturbed. For concentration against lesser attacks, I think it's implied that it would depend on the summoner and the attack itself. Stronger attacks would disturb the summoners concentration more while lesser attacks won't.

Just read it again and I was wrong, Mio couldn't chant while under Kazuki's attack. However due to Kazuki hitting her to hard it caused her to fly a good distance giving her room to cast another spell.

Meh, I guess it the difference between us is suspension of disbelief at this point.
You call bullshit while I can come up with justifications why this and that happens. Fair enough.

Although as a final argument that I just realized is that we don't know that only the top summoners can cast under pressure. Thus far all we've shown is the two summoners Kanae was kicking around (don't know their level), Mio (a noob), Kaguya and Hikaru (both strongest). Among them Kaguya and Hikaru definitely can cast while under pressure even by strong swordsman. However I believe they never mentioned that their the only one's that can do it. For all we know it's actually required to learn how to be able to cast while under attack and that the two that Kanae was kicking around are either bad students (which is why they're taking out stress on swordsman) or Kanae's just that good (normal swordsman can't strike as hard as her).

I think the last time I've been sad at something in a harem LN is when Issei died.

As long as the main characters don't irk me and the plot's not to bad I'm fine with it.

Out of curiosity what's your definition of a LN without a weakness?

Kazuki, Mio, Haruki, Koyuki and Kaguya play cards. Kaguya and Koyuki dominate because one's good at faking emotion while one's good at hiding emotion (guess which is which). Mio and Haruki suck at the game. Kazuki is somewhere in the middle.

After that sleep time comes. Kazuki go to asleep only to be shocked at Lemmy who's suppose to be in her room appearing out of nowhere.

Lemmy explains that while she doesn't remember shit she vaguely knows her mission. That's to say her mission is to make Kazuki harem king.

At this point Kazuki's head goes blank and Lemmy continues explaining that she's the lesser key of solomon which commends the 72 pillars. Kazuki reboots his brain and questions that the lesser key's suppose to be a book. Lemmy brushes it off and explains that she's a girl so deal with it. Kazuki can't trump this excellent argument. She then explains that her ability is to use all abilities of the 72 devils. So........72x10=720. Yep 720 abilities.

Kazuki realizes he hit the jackpot and gets excited. Lemmy crushes his dreams and reveals that he needs to get summoners (which are all conveniently girls) to love them and he gets to use the summon said girl uses. Kazuki as a responsible but more importantly virgin man realizes that charming 72 women is practically impossible. He questions why such a ridiculous condition is in place. Lemmy comes up with a bullshit explanation that I'm to lazy to remember. What I do remember is Lemmy devil that she is reveals that the 72 pillars will remove their support for Japan if Kazuki doesn't become harem king and screw 72 women.

She further reveals that the king's needed to save the world from the coming wave. Kazuki thinks this is all bullshit but goes along with it. Lemmy grants Kazuki a harem astral dress namely a ring that can read how a summoner feels about him and also if what he does improves a girls mood or not. Red heart=affection up while black spade=affection down.

He checks and the ring reveals, Mio=55, Kaguya=48, Koyuki=38, Haruki=30. At this point Kazuki is convinced that this is either bullshit since Mio's rating is the highest or the other girls really, really hate him and is just good at hiding it unlike Mio. He even comments that if Mio's 55, Kanae's affection for him is probably over a million.

Lemmy reassure's him that the other girls don't hate him. 30 is on the level of friendly while 65+ is romantic interest so that indicates that Mio doesn't hate him as much as she appears to. The key to getting powers is 65+. Lemmy then makes a plan, get Mio's affection rating up to 65 to get her powers. She further reveals that as more affection is gathered she gets more powers and grows up more.

Kazuki is still skeptical but reluctantly agrees. However he plans to get them in a "friendship" relationship instead of a romantic one since he has no interest in romance (gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay). Lemmy is confused at why but basically says whatever.

Lemmy then reveals that since her contract with Kazuki is special she can materialize and go back inside Kazuki's head (the astral world) whenever she wants. Kazuki understands and Lemmy then decides to sleep with Kazuki because reasons. Kazuki disagrees but then realizes it's a kid and he's not a pedo so he went whatever and let Lemmy sleep with him. Before sleeping he got a romantic text from Kanae about how she's in some sexy pajama's and shit. He replies back "brush your teeth and sleep" literally.

Man the guy has no sex drive.

Also I hate exposition.

Anyways Kazuki wakes up the next morning and makes breakfast for everyone. I think it's here that Mio decides Kazuki is her slave or something. Basically imagine Aria or Louise logic and you'll get what Mio's getting at. Kazuki is indifferent to all this.

Getting back on track the sempai's liked Kazuki's dishes and Kazuki got affection points from them.

At school during lunch Kazuki is eating and Mio butts in and eats with him because masters need to eat with slaves or some tsundere logic like that. Kazuki doesn't give a shit but invites Koyuki to eat with them. Mio get's jealous and Kazuki loses affection with her. The rest of the class notice the two and questions why Mio would want to eat with Kazuki. Mio says that it's a slave and master relationship and the rest of the class understands and makes fun of Kazuki. Mio agrees with the class and calls Hayashizaki style (Kazuki and Kanae's sword style) trash (she apparently doesn't get that Kazuki is being verbally bullied and she caused it).

Kazuki actually gets anger but holds himself in check because he doesn't want to case trouble. However instead Lemmy butts in and tells them off. Basically she trash talks them and tells them that a bunch of people that can't even contract or have 3rd rate summons can't hope to defeat her master even without her power. She challenges Mio to a duel.

At first Kazuki doesn't want to but Lemmy whispers to him that Mio actually wants to lose to him (or to be accurate prove that he's strong) and that he also wants to fight. Kazuki realizes that he's eager to make every summoner swallow their words and challenges Mio to a duel and if wins Mio has to admit that Hayashizaki style isn't weak. Mio arrogantly agrees.

After school the duel's about to start. Kaguya is horrified at the duel taking place and questions Kazuki's chances. Kanae on the other hand is excited and hands Kazuki his blade (a katana).

Kanae wants Kazuki to praise her in front of everyone and everyone wonders what screwed up brother sister relationship the two have.

Mio summons her astral dress and the duel starts with Koyuki watching over it. The distance is 50 meters which Kazuki can cross in 5 seconds. However Mio is much faster and already finished her spell, a projectile as fast as a bullet only for Kazuki to dodge it. Kazuki dodges another one and steps into attack range where he opens up with a Iaido cut draining Mio's shield and knocking her away.

The scene cuts to Kaguya and Kanae talking. Basically Kanae explains that her brother and her can read the flow of magic by training hard enough. Kaguya expresses amazement but comments that if it's Kanae she can't hit hard enough to broke her concentration.

Scene cuts back to the fight again. Mio doesn't want to lose and uses her level 2 spell which is a flame pillar. Kazuki dodges it and finishes her off.

Kazuki wants Mio to take back her words but instead causes Mio to broke down crying. Mio reveals that they were friends back in the orphanage which is why she's so upset that Kazuki doesn't remember her. Kazuki is shocked that Mio grew so much and her personality did a complete 180. Mio runs off crying as Koyuki announces the victor of the match.

Mio runs back to her room takes off her cloths (don't ask me why) and throws herself into bed. She reveals that she's upset that she's weaker then the Hayashizaki style that she perceived took away her "brother" hence why she talks shit about it. She's also upset that after all these years Kazuki and her strengths are still so far away. More importantly she's ashamed of her loss.

Kazuki comes to her room to tell her it's dinner time, but she refuses to eat. Kazuki comforts her and after tsundere drama it works. He gets the key to her heart and access to her summon.

Yea for the end of chapter 3.

God I hated this chapter due to how expositiony it was.

LN without weakness... haven't found one yet. But I like seeing likeable, developing characters, dynamic interaction, a decently paced plot and a world that doesn't make me shout "bullshit" all the time. I like subtlety. I hate copy-paste characters, violent tsunderes that don't grow out of it, messed-up pacing, the emotional sledgehammer and any kind of facepalming outside of comedy.
Thus I didn't even bother with IS and HnA, dropped Hagure Yuusha during the first volume and only bore with Titties of New Sister Devil because I hoped for more molesting... because said New Sister Devil has a nice scene every once in a while, but that alone's not enough. Not a fan of HS DxD, either... (if we limit the examples to action harem LNs)

The loli teacher had to reveal Lemmy's identity and that her ability wasn't what the loli teacher made up earlier (I think compatibility?). However, I don't think she said the other girls had to like Kazuki for Kazuki to use magic. Otherwise, the principal shouldn't be so stupid to not notice that Kazuki used Kaguya's power (albeit the 1st level).

i work for mangas..but most of what i pick up are LN original..esp since i saw them,have some1 tell me synopsis and then could look all over the place for a manga version..and if it does..i notice it..would try to pick it up..i would be the one who started over image,absolute duo,kenshin,baroque knight,asterisk,shinmai manga versions

Thanks for the argument and summary. It gives me the idea of the story and it interest me.

I'm not much of a fan of a harem/ecchi story, specially if its making the story go but if the character development is good then I'm sold for the story.

The character and the plot is what makes the story for me great.
