Anime and the 2020 Olympics

The IOC has recently announced that Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/oth...pic-Games.html

We can definitely expect some anime tie-ins to the Olympics in the years nearing 2020, so:
Are there any sports anime titles which you would like to see have an Olympics tie-in, and which animation studio would you like to see creating anime segments for the Olympics opening/closing(assuming they are made, of course)?

I'm not so sure if there are going to be a lot of anime tie-ins. Not a lot, but some (or even a bit) to say the least. Particularly for the opening ceremony.

Japan is one of the oldest countries on the planet, so there's a strong possibility that most of the Opening ceremony will be like what Beijing did in 2008; showing the host country's history.

But all in all, I hope that it'll be better than London's Opening Ceremony. The first 20-30 minutes of that opening ceremony showed a bit of Great Britain's history, but after that it felt more like a 2 hour montage of music videos and tv shows.

Okay, that covers the Swimming events.

Hmm, about what I said in my last post...

Maybe it's because I haven't watched enough Sport themed animes...

Oh wait a minute, I think I might have one for Track and Field; Suzuka.

Given what China did during their most recent Olympics, I think that Japan should use Haruhi Suzumiya in one of their major Olympics promotions, and include the text "She's our Girl!"

More seriously, it shouldn't be hard to have swimming and baseball/softball based anime tying into the Olympics. There's been plenty of baseball-focused anime over the years. There's been at least a couple basketball-focused anime as well, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an Olympic tie-in there to.

Baseball and softball currently ARE NOT Olympic Sports! There's a chance it gets added back in 2020, but overwhelming odds favor wrestling is the one that gets saved from the IOC's guillotine.

Honestly, the only connection we may see to anime would most likely be with the Olympic mascots. The mascots will typically be an animal or a person culturally relevant to the host country. With the Winter Games in Nagano in 1998, the mascots were 4 owls representing the 4 islands. The last times the Summers Gamers were in Tokyo, there was no mascot (the 1940 games were canceled due to WWII and 1964, no mascot).

I would not be surprised if the mascot is a cute animal creature. Maybe a Doraemon, Hello Kitty, Pikachu or what wide known creature it may be in 2020. Or if a person(s), Amaterasu Ōmikami & Tsukiyomi-no-mikoto or 5 Samurai (Tne Book of Five Rings, Musashi Miyamoto Musashi, 5 Olympic Rings).

I just imagine somehow a group of 5 Samurai lightning the Olympic flame in the stadium.

Something cute and culturally/nationally relevant! Like the Beijing, Sydney etc. mascots!

For an historical perspective, the slice-of-life story, Showa Monogatari, follows a lower-middle-class Japanese family during 1964. The show ends as the Games begin, but the anticipation of the event, marking Japan's return to the international community after the War, is a constant theme.

Well its a sports anime, its popular, and it could go on an international tournament (though one would hope we'd get that sooner than 2020 as that is seven years away).

Also I would hope for another Space Battleship Yamato series to be on air at that time, but that does not have to do with the Olymics, that's just me.

Well, there probably won't be much anime in the Olympics, but knowing how Shinzo Abe is pushing "cool Japan", there will definitely be some anime, though I'm guessing it's mostly going to be Miku and Shonen Jump stuff, because that's what's popular around the world.

Of course, you do realize that this is still like, 7 years from now, and what's popular now isn't gonna be what's popular 7 years from now

Hard to predict what might be popular seven years from now....

If anything, I think Production IG(assuming that they're still around) might do something. Or maybe Ghibli since they're more mainstream. Probably Hatsune Miku will be tied into this somehow.

Too bad it's not anytime soon though, because I can definitely see Free at some point doing something involving the olympics.

For basketball, there is always Slam Dunk.

For boxing, there's Hajime no Ippo. There are also a ton of soccer anime.

I think we all know the perfect anime to tie in to the 2020 Olympics: Akira (as this film had the 2020 Olympics be set in Tokyo well before yesterday's announcement).

In terms of predicting what will be popular in 2020, it's tricky. Obviously it's a long way away. But, if I look at the last 7 years, I started my fandom in 2006. In 2006 Haruhi was the most popular thing, and everyone was moaning about Moé anime. it's 2013 now, Haruhi is still about, and Moé is still going strong. Likewise Hatsune Miku has been around 6 years, and there's no reason she won't be around in another 6-7 years.

Of course, it's entirely likely some new fad will sweep japan eclipsing the aforementioned.

Still, I hope the 2020 Olympics will include Anime and other Japanese pop-cultural items, and not take a cop out and just try to ape what the Chinese did in 2008.

Of course I can see a lot of foreign journalists being rather bewildered... But then I wondered if the same was true during the UK Olympics. There was a lot of stuff there that I didn't think would be known of outside the British Isles.
