The first two episodes introduce new viewers to a universe with a completely different setting, tone, storytelling style, and plot urgency compared to the third episode onwards.

It's like they were trying to go out of the way to confuse people.

Pretty much everything I know about the series is from this thread. I know it's part of a franchise but for this TV series I dont care what goes on outside of the "Total Eclipse" setting. I'm not having much of a problem with the series except with some of the characters / goings on being a bit simplistic or out of place.

Clearly the animators wanted a flashy introduction but also wanted to do a "show dont tell" introduction to the background details to the series. I'd rather have things in order than suddenly starting at Ep 3 and having to find out all the background info in flashbacks or in pieces or just being a verbal info-dump.

But anyway, that's my POV. Hope you have better luck elsewhere.

The problem is the transition from ep 2 to ep 3. I dont think eps 1 and 3 are that different (clearly ep 3 is a bit lighter than 1 in tone) but with the gore scenes in ep 2, I'm not surprised some people find it jarring going from ep 2 to ep 3.

Clearly eps 1-2 were "introduction", with a 3 year timeskip right at the end. So I'm not surprised for there to be "a" change of pace with ep 3 but yeah... its quite severe.

If you dont like it you dont like it. Hope you dont feel like you wasted too much of your time.

Muv-Luv fans don't know what Muv-Luv is about.

oh, fans have been saying that TE IS a side story set in a much larger setting born from a series of visual novel. Large as in it allowed various stories and side stories to be written, about firstly the story of Takeru, the lead of the VN. There is side stories about eastern germans trying to stop East Germany from being overrun by betas, European Aces fighting their Battle of England against those aliens, Orbital Divers, and TE is, I repeat, another of those side stories. As a result, it is more your fault for not doing the research, in an age where information is readily available.
Bottomline, for you to say that fans of Muv-Luv don't know what Muv-Luv is about is insulting the time and emotions they invested in the VNs (because that is what it takes to bring oneself to care about the characters) and various medias. This is as bad as people writing it off because "it is just a porn game".

P.S.: I am currently playing the VNs so I know about that time and emotional investment.

Wrong. TE is not just any side story... It's the least engaging side story in the franchise unless the person loves the TSFs a lot. <3

Let them drop it. The series is certainly not for everyone since each person have different tastes when it comes to... pretty much everything. It's much better than having them waste their time and end up in disappointment in the end. Let them enjoy their shows, and we'll enjoy ours in peace. Even if someone drops it, it'll be okay. I'll just pick it up and dust it off. lol

Last but not least, you might want to edit your post just in case.

Let's just say that I expect a bit of research when someone writes fanfics in a sprawling world setting.

So it looks like it's canon that an australian force helped COSEAN... Good, that's more fodder for my fanfic...

Guess I might as well recycle some OCs. Also, I'm not surprised the Aussies are in the fight - there's a littlr treaty called FPDA that states that if Malaysia is attacked, Australia will come to help.

If you are looking for info, suggest you check out the japan wiki for muvluv. They more or less included all info from the Fan books and Intergral Works.

The problem is that said first two episodes were originally not part of Total Eclipse. They were day one filler/exposition.

Your proposal that "Muv-Luv fans don't know what Muv-Luv is about" stems from the simple misunderstanding created by the misconception that "Muv-Luv Alternative = Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse", which is completely wrong.

The tone, plot urgency etc. of the first two episodes were present to a greater extent in Muv-Luv Alternative, while Total Eclipse was meant to be a sidestory showing a completely different side of the war altogether, on the R&D side behind the front lines.

Unfortunately skipping right into that would leave new viewers kind of lost so they created two introductory episodes right from nothing that bring across some (though not all) of the tone of Muv-Luv Alternative.

Then with that done they got right into Total Eclipse which is of course completely different in tone, it was written to be that way from the beginning. Because it was originally written for people who had already cleared Muv-Luv Alternative.

Meaning that it's not that "fans don't know what it's about", it's that "completely new viewers don't know what it's about, fans are just happy to see a different side of the world from what they've already seen".

I've done EXTENSIVE RESEARCH on a site known as 4CHAN, I was trolled very hard but I will generalize the fanbase of a series based off this.

But it does sell TSF kits and figures. Or is apparently meant to, else they wouldn't have funded the anime.

You might as well group Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore into one.

I think Indonesia is in there in the FPDA too. Or was it Thailand?

Mmm... We get Super Hornets! Lovely little things.

I'm pretty sure any COSEAN mix would be slanted towards the F-16, given that Indon, Thailand and Singapore use the F-16, and Phillipines has expressed interest in it.

Large numbers of F-5s would have gotten chewed up in earlier engagements, I think, which would require replacements.

Malaysia would choose the F-18 because of wanting to be different, as well as perhaps influence from the Australians. Which might mean no Sukhois for us, unless Najib got all crazy with his buying ideas again... Hmmm. Butterworth hosts rotating dets of RAAF... RMAF/RAAF exchange programs.... I can work with this.

The Five Powers Defensive Agreement involves the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Also, I'd thing you Singies would be getting Eagles - Strike Eagles at least, with the option for Silent Eagles in the future.

That'd work somwhat... Except that I'm only fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia, and my Bahasa Indon's a bit rusty.

Oh, I see he'll be in the Fubuki by next episode.

Yeah, time for him to learn how to fly a TSF in a manner that doesn't involve abusing thruster power alone.

Also apparently a shower scene. Was this what Yoshimune was worried about when he tweeted his doubts about Episode 4 being unsuitable for broadcast?
