I apologize for creating this kind of thread, but I really need a bit of help.
Thing is, I decided to upgrade the following components of my PC to the ones I've specified:

1. Motherboard, upgrade to - Gigabyte SKT-AM3 M68MT-S2 Motherboard

2. Processor, upgrade to - AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 Socket AM3+ 4 Core Processor - 3.60GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo

3. Ram, upgrade to - Kingston 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM Memory (two chips for 8gb ram total)

4. cooler, upgrade to - Thermaltake Frio CPU Cooler

For additional info, I also have a:
video card - MSI R5770 Hawk
power supply - Gigabyte Superb 550P

Thing is I'm not looking for opinions on how good or bad this kind of setup is.

What I do need is an expert opinion on whether all this will work once it is put together?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, it won't work.
The motherboard you chose is am3 and is not compatible with the am3+ cpu you took.

You might want to change the cpu for a phenom II x4 955 if you can find one, it's stronger even if it's older.

What I want to know is that if you're not familiar with computer parts to even know if the setup you put together will work, why will you not accept any comment on how good or bad the setup is? If you have no knowledge of the parts then you have no idea how strong or weak the setup you pulled together is and if you could get something more worthwhile for the money.

Stupid me, shouldn't have posted that thing about opinions. Thing is, from my experience, most of the time when someone posts computer specs, it's only to brag about how powerful it is. In addition, a lot of comments follow the same path and eventually everything ends up with an endless comparison of various parts and arguing.

In addition, whenever someone asks for a performance rating opinion, others simply start listing every top of the line component on the market and telling me to take this or that.

Then again, that's probably because I've been around some pretty immature forums.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out the motherboard and processor problem.
so, basically I should look for a AM3+ motherboard. Or for a AM3 processor.

Unfortunately, I do have a rather limited budget, so perhaps, someone might suggest a slightly cheaper, yet still decent cooler? I don't need a top of the shelf monster, a decent one will do.

For additional info, the Thermaltake cooler costs approx. £45 (on amazon.com)

Ok, I did a little search and came up with this processor

AMD Phenom II X4 960T Quad Core Processor (3.00 GHz, 8MB Cache, Socket AM3, 95W

From what I understand it's a bit less powerful (though costs a bit more), but it has the AM3 sockets, which should go with the motherboard I mentioned.

From what I understand, AM3+ is better than AM3, right?

Anyway, consider this a correction to the first post. opinions are welcome.

P.S. I also found this processor

AMD ADX640WFGMBOX Athlon II X4 640 - 3.0 Ghz AM3

So, which one is better, this one or Phenom?

The phenom is better, but the x4 640 is great (that's the one I have).
am3+ is not more powerful than am3, that's sad but true.

The 960t should be more powerful than the fx4100.

Why would you want an aftermarket cooler? I wouldn't recommend overclocking with that motherboard (you might end up frying the vrm).
If you still want, look for a hyper 212+

About the cooler, it's just that I'm not sure a stock cooler will be able to provide powerful enough cooling.

I have an ancient two core Athlon processor with a stock cooler, and the problem is that during summer, whenever I play (which is a lot), the computer tends to heat up almost to the point of shutting down.

Therefore I want to get a cooler which is a bit more heavy duty than the one that comes with the processor.

ok, well, look for a hyper 212+. But the stock cooler should be enough.
The problem with high temperature like that is probably due to the case and not the heatsink.

The Phenom is the faster CPU. Both of them are socket AM3 CPU's and will work fine with your motherboard. AM3+ is a better socket than AM3, but the quad core AM3+ CPU's are a bit lacking. The 8 cores are good if you can utilize all the cores effectively.

How hot is your summer? ...

You should try cleaning out the heatsink/fan for the CPU. It shouldn't get hot enough for problems to occur on stock. Even in the middle of summer with air conditioning off, I can still run my Athlon II heavily overclocked with stock heatsink/fan.

I would wait and see if you actually need a better CPU heatsink/fan before you buy it.

Was it always like that? If not, you probably have a lot of dust built up on components and possibly on the heatsink. Sweep or vacuum out the dust, it'll help.

Up to a point, Ledgem.

Over the last few years summers in Latvia have been becoming a bit hotter every year. That, coupled with increased load on the processor as more and more demanding games are played, results in a overheating processor.

I do clean it from time to time. And I'm always surprised about the amount of dust I clean out of the computer. I mean, there doesn't seem enough room inside my PC for all the dust, yet they're still there.

The 960t should be more powerful than the fx4100. Why would you want an aftermarket cooler? I wouldn't recommend overclocking with that motherboard (you might end up frying the vrm).
