The female lead completely sucks. Wish the main character's childhood friend was the main heroine since IMO she has a lot better character chemistry to begin with as well. Maybe it was too much to expect from Kyoani to truly make something different from their usual style. Even though there's "action" and a more serious plot presented to us, it seems filtered through the typical Kyoani lens. I hope the girl doesn't single handedly sink this series, but I am not holding my breath.

Skipping a lot of the good things I'm about to say. I'm just going to go in here and say what's iffy.

Since I'm probably not allowed to go into details about the novel here, but I'll just say I enjoyed the introduction and exposition more in the novel. Or maybe it was just me that imagined it entirely different.

This episode had a great moment for intro but everything else that followed just felt kinda rushed. One of the problems I had in this is that the idea could have been presented better had it not been packed too much in this ep. I'm talking about the idea that Mirai is frail girl who doesn't want anything to do anything with those creatures. I will give them props that they showed she lacked resolve when fighting. Although I think it would've been beneficial if they spread it out a little. I won't be delving on the other issues I found since it would be on uncharted territory for other people.

In general all I can say about this episode is that it could have been directed and written better. It was an ok episode and I enjoyed it. Let's hope Hanada and other episode directors pick it up.

So far the premise presented here is pretty promising. I'm picking up some things that I think might happen.

Awaiting for Hiroomi to add into the mix.

Lol. Good point. Either I'm just as contradictory as the characters I prefer, or else there is understatement beneath that fantastic surface. Probably both.

As for Reckoner, we almost always see things differently. Difference is good. To me, Mirai is unique, not same, and difficult, not easy.

I have made a characters/seiyuus page for this show, with pics of ten main characters and their seiyuus, and a bit of info about the seiyuus.

Hmm, the feedback in this thread has me kind of disappointed. I have yet to actually see the episode, but a lot of the concerns people are voicing are things that often turn me off heavily to certain shows... I'll have to see how I feel once I actually watch it.

Hope the guy has alot more up his sleaves other then just being immortal, or else he'll just get stabbed every episode and the girl will save him

They already implied that the girl is far more skilled than him, which is why he no longer attempts to fight her off and just run away instead.

On the other hand he did also point out that Mirai is not a bad warrior at all, and that she should have no trouble taking down the average Youmu. It's just that she is afraid of them.

A bit slow but that's normal for most intro episodes. I like all the core cast presented so far (Akihito is quite likable, Mitsuki is pure sex and Mirai is ok, she should take those glasses off more frequently) and looks like it will have some nice stuff in terms of fight scenes later.

OP > ED...and that's it. Good start, Kyoani.

So this is a regular school story with some supernatural thrown in.
I was kinda expecting more supernatural and less school life.
So far it's working out fine.
That Mirai sure is a clumsy girl despite her power.
Gonna give this a few more episodes before I decide..

I thought Protag-kun's voice acting was actually very good and, in fact, one of the things that convinced me the show was going to be worth watching in the first place. He sounds pretty unusual for a protagonist, so let's hope he improves from here.

I think you might be watching the wrong show, and should stop posting about it immediately.
I maintain that this sort of content would appear in -any- similar show made today. You only notice it because it's KyoAni, and you can't stand anything they do. God knows why.

Yeah sure this is exactly like K-On or Tamaket, totally the exact same show, yup.

Rather, Chu2Koi is mocking the kind of show that this is.

I liked the premiere. As expected of KyoAni, the visuals were pretty, especially the cherry-blossoms scene. I'm not too sure of the premise though, since they just skimmed through the youmu stuff, but I'm sure that will be explored in the later episodes. The characters seem interesting enough; didn't expect Mirai to be that much of a klutz though (as expected of KyoAni...).

I agree; Akihito doesn't come off as the usual anime protagonist. I find him and his interactions quite relatable.

Anyway, a solid first episode. Looking forward to the next one.

No. How about you stop telling people what to do.

This was Kyoani's chance to truly show us that it is trying to tackle something different. They sorta blew it from the first episode. Their same stupid high school antics with poor characters (particularly the main female) are present. You talk about just because it's Kyoani. Well let's see, despite studios like JC Staff, A1 Pictures and Deen getting a ton of crap (they deserve it to an extent), they had some fantastic unieque or not so in your face commercialised titles in their mix. Kyoani? Well aside from Munto which failed spectacularly they are doing the SAME STYLE over and over again. It only differs in intensity because heck even Hyouka had it too, except Chitanda moe pandering drastically lowered as the series progressed. They are truly inescapable. Whatever though, I'm wasting energy with you here considering how you pretty much defend everything kyoani related whilst pretending you're not a fan.

Wasn't as mindblowing as I was hoping it to be. That trailer was either overselling the series or the 1st episode was just incredibly low key.

On the plus side, Mitsuki is one hottie and her playful/troll personality is great. Best female Kyoani character since... I don't know bloody know. A very longtime. I could almost sucker in a "Certain Wing" with a character like that but I'm not that mean

The setting is different, but it's clearly a Kyoani show. Which is a good thing for fans of their previous works, and a bad thing for people who were expecting something different.

I equate it to a filter that every KyoAni show gets put through - like a special lens on the camera that tints everything in a certain way. Moe girls and cute, harmless boys, comedically sexy teacher types, falling leaves and cherry blossoms. It's certainly evident in a show like Free!, which despite the radical (for KyoAni) departure of five male leads, ends up looking and sounding exactly like the prototypical Kyoto Animation series with an extra piece of anatomy.

To what extent a Kyoto Animation show succeeds (artistically - commercial success is a near-certainty) probably depends on how well the material is suited to this treatment. I think Hyouka succeeds best among recent series because there's a very strong distinctiveness to the writing that shines through, and that the visuals are spectacular even by KyoAni standards doesn't hurt. We'll see about Kyoukai.
